Regular visitors will know that westhamfans.org has never been in the business of pushing the scurrilous rumor, however there is growing evidence that this summer's predicted clear out from the Boleyn will be 'extremely comprehensive' according to reports emanating from Iceland.
The red tops have already picked up on the fact that big earners Freddie Ljungberg, Lucas Neill and Luis Boa Morte are all being offered to clubs with Hammers having to offer compensation payments to the players and their respective new clubs, but it appears that the management team of Alan Curbishley and Mervyn Day and the entire back room staff 'imported' from Charlton are part of the clear out!
The current chairman is angry and alarmed at how much money former chairman Eggert Magnusson committed the club to paying in wages, basically he is happy to bank roll more transfers BUT not before the dead wood is cut out. The only problem is, that to many fans and observers there is an awful lot of cutting to be done, or perhaps the fans and owners can't see the forest for the trees? - Ed

To ramble on the media vernacular, the BBC comedy drama show The invisibles features a safe cracker who's mantra is " I am William Shakespeare, I am Bobby Moore" he names the personification of British brilliance, and yet this great icon, who would have been a multi multi millionaire in today's game was forced to play second fiddle to Sylvester Stallone and be the fall guy when required! ......
What a mean mistreatment of a man who deserved so much more (no pun intended). If one of today's 'heroes' was treated as badly there would be a public outcry, how on earth the various authorities let such a noble figure head of all that was great about football have to scratch around for a living having led his country to the ultimate pinnacle beggars belief.........
When Rio, Frank Jnr, Joey Cole, 'Geordie Boy', Paul Ince and Jermaine Defoe among many others ply their trade maybe they should remember one of the main reasons why they arrived at West Ham United in the first place, they should remember Bobby Moore when they speak to their respective accountants, and they should do the decent thing and pledge as much as they can to the Bobby Moore fund against cancer..
As a boy I remember Bobby running out against Man U in 1968 at the Boleyn, he stunk of Vitalis, a hair product that he was forced to endorse in order to live a 'comfortable' life style. - Ed

Perhaps it is the lure of playing against the champions elect Manchester United at Old Trafford in this Saturday's live on sky crunch match that has had a galvanising effect on several of West Ham's walking wounded...
Mathew Etherington has emerged from the 'Groin Zone' to make himself available, while Mark Noble, Bobby Zamora and George McCartney have all shaken off knocks ahead of what promises to be an exciting match..
Of course this time last year Hammers went to Old Trafford and succeeded in securing the mission impossible of Premiership survival, this time round things are things are a little different. Manchester Utd have to win in order to secure the title of champions, whereas last year things were already done and dusted..
On the face of it everything is geared towards a Man U victory, but as we all know West Ham have been a thorn in the side for Sir Alex for many a year...
For most Hammers fans the realistic hope is that Alan Curbishley can motivate his team to go out and "give it a go" mindful of the fact that holding on to tenth spot ahead of Tottenham is massively important to the fans as well as being the cut off point for the various financial bonuses on offer to both manager and players alike. Some would say that they don't deserve to receive a bonus, but those people are living in the twilight zone. Alan Curbishley's brief was to secure survival, which he did, and then to steady the ship with a top half finish, which he just about has, and then to push for a European spot, which is entirely possible so long as the team do not sustain the same amount of crippling injuries that they have this season..
Last weekend's game against Newcastle may not have been the result that was wanted nor indeed expected (after 40 minutes that is) but the style and effort won over many fans who had become bored with Hammers 'one dimensional' play of late. The fact that injuries have dictated this style seems to have eluded them! - Ed

The Swedish International captain was stretchered off after 20 minutes against Newcastle with a suspected broken rib.....
Loosing yet another expensive signing along with having what seemed like a certain victory turned in to a draw just about sums up Hammers season!
Things looked so promising as the crowd got behind the team, Mark Noble and Dean Ashton both scored and all looked set for a thoroughly enjoyable sun soaked 'Hamfest'. Alas it was not to be, the defensive frailties that had been obscured by such a superb start began to reappear and Newcastle duly obliged with their two goals in the space of three minutes.
Many people are writing the rest of the season off but forthcoming opponents Manchester Utd and Aston Villa have got it all to play for, whereas finishing above Tottenham will be Hammers solace for a season that promised so much but didn't do what it said on the can! - Ed

With three games remaining how will West Ham's season pan out? Maintaining tenth spot ahead of Tottenham is the only achievable aim for a team brimming with talent, problem is of course that most of it has either made a brief cameo appearance before disappearing off into the injury ether or have struggled for form.
So on the face of it this has been a poor season, but mid table safety was part of the three year plan wasn't it? The problem with such a plan is that half way through the glass is either half full or half empty, and to many Hammers fans and also the Chairman, the glass is most definitely half empty!
Hammer's wage bill is phenomenal, when the interim trading figures are available in September there will be no disguising the fact that survival in the Premiership has come at a very high cost indeed, but the unsettling factor is that the team has been forced to play a 'percentage' game, all this is a far cry from the days of intricate football with nippy wingers rampaging down the flank pinging crosses in........................Injuries, Injuries and yet more injuries, an excuse? bad luck? or perhaps a little bit of bad planning. The fact is that Eggert Magnusson spent massively, some would say irresponsibly, in order to keep West Ham in the Premiership, but only two of the big signings actually did anything. The situation was compounded by the arrival of Freddie Ljungberg, it is not that he cannot play, but his disproportionate wages were always eventually going to have a effect sooner or later, it is quite obvious that the current chairman was appalled to find out how much dear old 'Eggy' had committed the club to pay out in wages...........
Don't expect many big summer signings but do expect a few departures, that is if any club is willing and foolish enough to match the players ludicrous salaries.
The future is still, as it has always been, in the academy, come on Curbs and BG and 'Nanny' come to think of it, invest in the future and not in the past! Sears, Tomkins and Collison represent the now and not the yesterday. - Ed

It's a pity that Alan Curbishley cannot call on some of his brother's more persuasive charms when it comes to people motivation, brother Bill in case you didn't know is the manager of the Who, it was he who demanded that the band fulfilled their promised gigs despite the death of their bassist on the eve of the tour!
It is to be hoped that the team of fitness specialists called in by the club don't do an immediate U turn when confronted with the reality that is Chadwell Heath, if they do progress further than the car park they will notice a particularly interesting ribbed concrete walkway that leads from the training pitches to the Portakabin facilities where the players change, if you wanted to increase the chances of players tripping over on their studs you could not have wished for a better surface and the list goes on....basically the facilities on offer are a joke and are on a par with a Dutch second division club's! In no other area of business would such valuable assets (the players when they are not crocked) be treated with such disdain, add to that the massive financial turnover (players wages) and it is clear to see that some major restructuring right across the board to include training and medical support is essential and much sooner than later.

Perhaps it is testimony to the importance that West Ham have placed on the game against Portsmouth at the Boleyn this evening, but unusually Hammers are keeping tight lipped about who will make up the squad.
Sceptics will probably assume that Hammers ever growing injury list is being compiled prior to the squad being named, Freddie Sears, Bobby Zamora, Macca and a few others are all in contention, unfortunately given recent 'fitness updates' and their negative conclusions, th eplayers named may well drop into the dark hole that represents Hammers 'phantom team'.
Whether the length of the injury list is down to poor signings, poor training or just bad luck is a matter for debate but the reality is that tonight Hammers will be doing a Harry, bare bones an' all! - Ed
