Why West Ham have to beat Newcastle United

It’s fair to say that West Ham have hardly had the ideal start to the season. Whilst most Hammers fans will be unsurprised that they’re not at the top of the Premier League, few people would have guessed that they would be bottom of the table after the first two games. But with a disastrous performance against Manchester United, and a disappointing result against Southampton, it’s clear that Slaven Bilić has got a tough few weeks ahead of him.

So this is why it’s essential that the Hammers have to come up with the goods when they travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United on Saturday 26th of August.

Newcastle have also suffered a shaky start to the season with a defeat by Tottenham Hotspur and an embarrassing loss against the newly promoted Huddersfield Town. But with some big money signings on the horizon that could bring William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon to the London Stadium, it’s hoped that there could be a turnaround in the Hammers’ fortunes.

It’s hoped that Carvalho could help shore up West Ham’s notoriously leaky defence that’s already somehow managed to let in seven goals in just two matches. But Newcastle have also had their own defensive problems that could allow strikers like Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho a golden opportunity to get their names on the scoresheet.

However, in order to do that they’ll have to get past Ciaran Clark who’s been a core part of the Newcastle United and Republic of Ireland defence. Clark will undoubtedly be undergoing a strict fitness regime to ensure that he’s up to the challenge of keeping West Ham at bay. What makes this match between West Ham and Newcastle all the more exciting is the fact that it will give 'Geordie Boy' Andy Carroll a chance to play against his old club. And with Newcastle rumoured to be set to try and tempt Andy Carroll back to the north-east, it’s clear that this match will be a highly emotional affair.
