Why do you support West Ham?

I know that may sound a bit obvious but, not all fans are locals.
I am, I lived in East Ham as a baby then moved to Barking and grew up there. My old man is a Hammer and so was my Grandad (lived in East Ham all his life). So for me, it was an obvious choice, it's in my blood, like it is for many of us.
The reason I ask this is:
A) For a bit of fun (West Ham related).
B) Having read through the thread 'youngest User', I was surprised at how many regulars on this site are young. Unfortunately, a lot of youngsters nowadays support either Man U, Chelsea or L'pool because of their high profiles, TV coverage, or their success. So, it is refreshing and a wonderful surprise to see so many young Hammers on this site. Are you all from East London? How did you get to be a Hammer? The old fogeys can reply too!!!
GOOD ON YOU-th!

who knows why?

I remember watching alan taylor slot 2 past fulham in the cup final.. followed them ever since.. but it wasnt the glory of winning the cup that year that made me support them, i never supported any one before although i always loved to watch the game , i could never have imagined supporting any one else, ive lived all over the place, watford , beckenham, southampton , now portsmouth but always felt at home when i was in london , used to work in beckton for a long time was so nice to be near my beloved hammers, im nearly 49 saw them do the arse in the cup final at wembley thanks to trevs bonce:) i so love my west ham ,not for the glory cos thats never gonna come lol. its all the the rest of it .. all you hammers fans when we get together at a game we r like no other fans.. it just feels so great being a hammer what ever happens.. will die a hammer and re-incarnate as one too .. :) west ham is a way of life it is everything.. come on you gorgeous irons ..

I went through a phase of

I went through a phase of 'supporting' Man Utd in the 90's like a lot of kids at the time but never really settled on a team. I liked football but none of my immediate family were big fans so I didn't really get involved as much as I could of. Then I started university and playing football with my mates who were Coventry and Spurs fans who got me into watching games and that. My grandad passed away whilst I was there and he supported West Ham and would go and see them a lot when he was younger, his family being from the area so I decided to follow West Ham in his memory. My aunt did a trace back through the family tree and found also that one of my relatives, great great grandfather or something used to work for Thames Ironworks so I thought it was even more of a reason to follow them. Sadly, I am the only one of my family who supports the Hammers, the rest being Arsenal and Liverpool fans!

I love this question...

Mines just like most, four generations of Hammers in the family, originally from Forest Gate and now spread around the London area. I love this question and when ever I meet a new Hammer, particularly one that doesn’t live in the East, its my first question. The typical reply is family originate from East London or they were the first team I ever saw play live. However, the other most popular reply being “I just liked the colours”!!!! Some time back I was at a party in Berkshire and got talking to a guy who said is Dad was from E7 and West Ham mad. They lived in West London so he was taken to Stamford Bridge when the Ammers were in town, this was the mid 60’s. The score was 5 all! Regrettably the guy chose his local team and supported Chelski ever since. My Son, when only bout 6 years old, asked why we supported West Ham , I explained 4 generations from London etc, he said but Dad aren’t Arsenal from London… cant we support them? I sent him to bed with no supper! did him no harm....Today he is a bigger fan than I am!

my brother

my brother would have killed me if i didd,nt , he was a nutter of the 70,s and was west ham crazy every saturday he would return from matches with war wounds so what choice did i have.

I Blame my Aunt Lil (formerly Lilly Bonds)

My Aunts fault. She told me we were all related to Billy Bonds and now that he was in the West Ham first team we should go and see him play. I had been watching him play at Charlton before West Ham bought him and thought he looked like my brother but just passed it off. Anyway I went to see West Ham play Burnley and liked what I saw. Booby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, (Peters swapped with Jimmy Greaves soon after) were all still there and a young Billy Bonds was making a name for himself that was almost 38 years ago when I had just left school. I have been a Hammers supporter ever since. I also took my son Terry to West Ham to watch Trevor Brookings last game when he was 4 and he also has supported them ever since. I live just across the Thames in Erith and we have a large number of Hammers fans here.

funny story bondsy

about 9 or 10 years ago when billy bonds was in charge of millwall i was a mini cab driver and had one of millwalls players in my cab cant remember his name a young irish kid i told him i was west ham and asked how is billy bonds doing he looked at me and said," he is a bloody joke". , why i replied a little surprised." he is a fitness freak." he said and none of us can keep up with him in training weve had enough" i chuckled to myself thinking give em hell bondsy give em hell.

I was born in Tooting so my dad was a Chelsea fan. He took me to see them play the Hammers in the early 70's and West Ham won - so I told him I didn't want to support Chelsea as West Ham were obviously a better team. Of course he loves reminding me of my comment now! That was it - 40 odd years later and still an avid Hammers fan even though I live overseas.

Turns out it's my Nans doing

Turns out it's my Nans doing that I support West Ham, I was born in harrow near wembley and my old mans from Hayes,so we ain't local. When my dad was a little kid he started playing football and asked my dear Nan for a football kit,so she went out and chose the West Ham one just because she liked the colours. So I thank her for that,my old man brought me up to love West Ham, so that's how I support the hammers. My dad married into a family of Chelsea fans,I have about 15 cousins all chelsea!I remember being young and my cousins dressing me up in Chelseas kit,I was too young to know any wiser!then my dad ripping it off me. Wouldn't matter how many trophies they win they could never convert me,I love West Ham more than anything, win lose or draw, trophies or no trophies I wouldn't change it for anything! purely ecause of the feeling I get standing on the Bobby Moore lower tier each week singing bubbles. And when we eventually do win something it will be worth the wait...fortunes always hiding

Mitchell thomas

My dad is a rugby man and follows Wolves when he takes an interest in football so no family ties, but West Ham were my local team and, in spite of a glory hunting season supporting Liverpool as a naive 10-year old, I always loved them. My big brother took me to see West Ham v Palace in 91 or 92 (Lost 2-0, Mitchell Thomas in centre mid, but even that didn't put me off). I had a season ticket for as many years as I could afford it and even now, living in Florida, I piss my wife off on a Saturday morning watching on ESPN or online. It's hard not having a hardcore group of west ham fans around like I did living in Romford but, who knows, maybe i'll get more involved in the banter on here.

Because I have to

I was born in Romford, I first went to see West Ham play when players like Ken Brown, Johnny Sissons, Johnny Byrne, Joe Kirkup and Jim Standen were playing. Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters were in that team as well, but I didnt mention them because that would be too obvious. I love West Ham United Football Club, they are a constant. They have been the same all my life. As soon as you think a good season is going to happen they produce a shocker. In 1989 all the smart money was on West Ham winning the league, but they got relegated. In 2003 they got relegated with a team that is going to South Africa this year to try to win the world cup after winning a few championship medals between them. This year we expected European football, but we end up surviving only because there happened to be three clubs in the premiership who were totally hopeless. I live in NZ these days, I moved here in 1990 when I couldn't take anymore the win double of Margaret Thatcher leading the country and the Scottish manager at West Ham. I would mention his name, but that would be incredible bad luck. I am worried that now Zola has gone, we may end up with another who is just as bad as the Scottish one. I don't see any of the men mentioned as being up to the job, or better qualified. Though I know most of you won't agree, but this time next year we may all be wishing that Zola was still at UP. I think he has taken the blame for everything, when both boards he has worked under, worked against him the whole time, really the writing was on the wall when Collins went. To answer the question, I support West Ham because I am a romantic masochist who hates Spurs.

Ill be honest with you guys.

Ill be honest with you guys. . . i am a young poster, and i take everything West Ham to heart and I will never waver from my support for this club. My first football memories were of Old Trafford and supporting Manchester United, my Grandads family is from Manchester you see and we visit them about once a year. Then when I was 5 on a really hot day, on a sandy beach named Camber on the south east coast, I asked my Dad "the other side of the family", who all grew up in London, if I could support West Ham like himself and his brother and their Dad. . . 2 days earlier I had been to watch Wimbeldon vs West Ham. I felt as If i belonged to the club from that day, and i will belong to the club to the day i die. Im always proud to say I SUPPORT WEST HAM UNITED, FROM THE EAST END !!! ( a tear comes to my eye every time i remember this moment, its set in stone, even though i was so young)

Dont normally post in here

Dont normally post in here but couldn't resist this one......because my Dad hated me - something about a postman or milkman.....!! Seriously tho, i have been West Ham from birth (24 now - been on this site for ages but only started posting in last few months) and despite not being local, it was the only option. My family have always been West Ham. Grandad was West Ham, worked on the docks, played for Grays and even turned out for West Ham once (programme is on the old mans wall!!) until a docks injury well and truly put paid to that. Dad - silver town and canning town and avid West Ham. Me, not local but just as avid - love of my life!! Always have been, always will be. Had no choice but I'd choose no other way. Best fans in the world - and we really arent the norm - it takes something different to be a West Ham fan. Bubbles typifies everything we seem to go through as fans.

I started supporting the "HAMMERS",after my dad took me to see them when i was 6,and it's my birthday on Tuesday and i will be 54(old fogey) as you so kindly put it mate.So i have had the magical claret & blue running through me for the past 48yrs.I have never witnessed such a poor season, but never in my lifetime would i contemplate desserting my beloved West Ham,and i know, that it don't matter how much we moan about the current team, not one of us on this site would ever stop supporting the the Hammers. So,please everyone, keep the faith and roar on the Hammers. "BE LUCKY"...Elmo.

I admire your loyalty Elmo,

I admire your loyalty Elmo, but unlike you, I've had enough, I've been supporting West Ham since my Uncle took me to watch them as an 11 year old back in the 1958/9 season, there have been some great times but a lot more heart ache, walking back to the station after the game, in the pouring rain, we were going through the catalogue of things that we have had to go through, The Bond Scheme, The 'Manny' farce, Tevezgate, not to mention the endless relegation. We thought all this would change when the Icelandics took over, but no, West Ham are the only club that could have a Billionaire Owner go bankrupt ! I will always support them but from the comfort of my armchair, I will not be renewing my Season Ticket if, as appears likely, we get relegated.

Biggest high: Hammers -v- Scousers FA Cup Final Lowest: Hammers -v- Wolves Tuesday Found the 2007-2008 review DVD after the game yesterday. Watching it got me so frustrated...there was so much potential and Deano was banging them in. What I'd give for mid-table obscurity right now.

My whole family is Claret

My whole family is Claret and Blue-all from Essex and Barking and Teddington.(Random). My old man was in the RAF so we eneded up in St. Athan Wales, i still live in the area. I first starting following football in primary school-there were Arsenal,Liverpool and Man Utd fans everywhere, there was one Newcastle fan but mostly dominated by the early three teams. I liked watching Man Utd-i think it was the Beckham effect but didnt really follow them. Then my dad (who isnt the keenest sposts man more into his cars) told me about my aunts love of the Claret and Blue which steamed from my Grandad, he said he followed them but not very religiously. So i decided they were my team and at 11 years old i bought my own West Ham jersey(it was on the sale rail at JJB) i was so proud and hardly ever took it off it my first game live was WHUFC V Blackburn and Di Canio had just signed -it was the same season that i'd started Secondary school where i would pretend i was Joe Cole my hero. Paolo Scored he was like Beckham was to Man Utd fans for me i absolutley adore him! and i've gone to watch games ever since-i see most away games in Birmingham area-and in Manchester i've been to Whufc v Man Utd, Cit,Wigan, Bolton they're the best games!! But i try to get to at least one every other month!I lve the singing and the pre-match atmosphere some pubs i've been to are mental when we're there!! I love the fact that we're so unpredictable and that we always have the potential to be champions(just look at Lamps,Johnsen,Cole,Rio,Carrick, Defoe, Terry where did they all start??)-i just wish the club would get some back bone keep our big stars and plow some money in then we'd be laughing-we need to do a Pompey who in my opinion are the best at the moment outside the top 4! best song i've heard sung to the tune of white xmas about Frank Lampard snr scoring at the final in the 80's(song shows how similar both were!!) I'm dreaming of a Frank Lampard, Just Like the one at Elland Road, When the Ball came over, and Frank fell over, and scored the fucking winning goal! WINNING GOAL!!!

Hi all, (I just read this

Hi all, (I just read this after posting - sorry its long winded) I’m probably an 'old coot', to you youngsters; a 57 year old guy born in and living in Melbourne, Australia. My parents migrated from the East End of London and I grew up here in Melbourne playing our own brand of footy; Australian Rules. As an adherent of that game, I also followed/supported my favourite team at the elite level. I had no interest in the round-ball game which was often (in those early years) referred to as ‘wog ball’. This was mainly because it was played by the many migrants from southern Europe that had come to our shores in those post WW 2 days. I’m glad we are all better informed and more tolerant these days. The fact that my East End (Bromley by Bow) raised dad was a football (soccer) player himself and also an ardent West Ham fan, mattered little to this boy. I was well and truly caught up with my schoolboy mates and immersed in the local football brand and its culture. However, to this day I can still hear my dad walking around the house calling out things like “Up the ‘ammers” with his cockney accent. My dad died at a pretty young age so I never got the chance to understand his connection and consequent affection for ‘is ‘ammers. About five years ago I began digging up a bit about my family history and background. I was able to discover and make contact with a number of modern day cousins of whom I had previously no knowledge. It turns out that many of these are total fanatics when it comes to the Hammers – it’s almost a family thing (although there are a few miscreants amongst us). I have since learned that my dad’s dad, my grandfather, was also a hammers fan. In fact he had been so since the first days. My understanding is that he was a supporter of the Thames Iron & Steel Works team; West Ham United's previous incarnation. Apparently there were some family connections to that company and its football team during the 1890s. It’s strange, but learning of these things began to help me understand a little of where my dad was coming from and made me somehow develop a desire to follow the fortunes of the club myself. Well, you wouldn’t want to know it; it only took 54 years for the seed to sprout, but I am now something of a fanatic myself – if one can be so from this distance. I am on the WHUFC website daily, I scan the news and web for information daily (it’s how I found this site) and whenever they are playing, if not being televised, I am looking at a text commentary of the match on the net. This could be seen as odd behaviour when you consider that they are usually playing during the very small hours of the morning our time. One of these days I will make to The Boleyn Ground to watch a match - hope they don't move beforehand. Having cable TV, I usually get to see most games live on the box; again during the small hours. I just love it and wouldn’t miss a game for quids. I’m always there in front of the box, drinks and snacks at the ready. All I need is a scarf and a clapper. If my old dad was here now, he would be absolutely gob-smacked to think that he could watch his ‘ammers ‘live’ and in full colour on TV here in Oz. In those early days of the 1950s and 1960s, all you could hope for, if you were lucky, was for the match scores to be printed in the paper three or four days after the event. Here’s an invitation for Melbourne Hammers fans. If you do not have access to cable and you feel inclined to sit up during the small hours watching them, I’d be happy to host one or two at my place to share a beer, a snack and talk a whole lot of rubbish about the hammers when they are playing. I’m out in the east of Melbourne - Glen Waverley way. Cheers Bill

dear saltbush

you are indeed a hammer from birth, great story im sorry about your dad , but if i could say one thing about this club i would say its a very warm family club. I must say i think your nuts though i mean your born in the most beautifull country in the world and you are depressing yourself following west ham from the other side of the world. but i guess its in the blood and the love for your dad keeps your heart claret and blue, although i tip my baseball cap to you for clinging so strongly to your roots. ps do you know how a country with a popultion of 12 can be so domminant in sport , ausies are stupendous when it comes to sport. good health to ya mate.

Good question about why we

Good question about why we become Hammer Fan's, i often wonder myself. i grew up early eighties and although i followed rugby, due to having an English Dad( Keswick) and a Scottish Mum ( Dunfermline) i played Football all my life as that what my parents wantd me to play. All my mates growing up were either Man U, Liverpool, Arse, or maybe a few spurs and Chelsea. For some reason i picked West Ham ( Maybe i like the colour) and for the next 30 years have watch and followed this great club in all there ups and many down's. Thankfully some smart people in the world invented Pay TV and the internet so we can further coverage down under.

Hey SB, back around Easter

Hey SB, back around Easter time I and 10 or 11 friends drove from Melbourne to Adelaide for the w/e to catch up with some friends of a friend. Somehow Saltbush came up and for nigh on 6 hours of the trip everyone was looking out the windows for Saltbush. Seeing your username cracked me up. Good to know that here in Melbourne there are some TRUE supporters of a football club instead of the countless closet mancs, scousers and chelscummers!! I've been a fan of West Ham for my whole 34 yrs and like you sit up into the early hours every w/e to watch my beloved Hammers (drives the wife mad). Glad you found such a great team to follow and enjoy those early mornings/late nights beer in hand!!! COYMELBOURNEIRONS

Hi m2c, I reckon I know what

Hi m2c, I reckon I know what you mean about driving the wife crazy. I used to have that problem – not any more! I guess I am lucky in that I’m now able to watch the Hammers anytime I like. You see my wife actually ran away – with a policeman; of all people. A couple of weeks back, I was driving down the road and ended up being done for speeding. At the time I was actually accelerating and the copper had to chase a bit harder. When I finally pulled over the copper asked me if I had any excuse for going over the limit and why I tried to get away from him after seeing him. I told him about my wife and explained that when I saw him in the rear vision mirror, I thought he was trying to bring her back to me.
