Hammers v Gooners

Despite having more possesion, 2 -0 down before the end of the first half means that Hammers have it all to do if they have any chance of emerging with anything other than a spanking by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Team line ups:........Arsenal * 24 Almunia * 31 Hoyte * 05 Toure * 10 Gallas * 22 Clichy * 27 Eboue * 04 Fabregas * 16 Flamini * 07 Rosicky * 09 Eduardo * 25 Adebayor Substitutes * 01 Lehmann, * 02 Diaby, * 13 Hleb, * 17 Song Billong, * 32 Walcott West Ham * 01 Green * 02 Neill * 05 Ferdinand * 06 Upson * 03 McCartney * 14 Pantsil * 17 Mullins * 18 Spector * 16 Noble * 07 Ljungberg * 12 Cole Substitutes * 21 Wright, * 09 Ashton, * 30 Tomkins, * 33 Camara, * 39 Collison Ref: Chris Foy

All in All,

All in All, Hammers didn't play that badly against Arsenal. First, you have to remember that it's ARSENAL we were playing, and in their current form they really do look like winning the Premier League. Second, it was at Emirates, where only one team has beaten them (a great team at that!). Third, there were three fairly good chances for West Ham -- Cole's shot that was just deflected, Pantsil's near miss, and the corner cleared off the line. Ljungberg's bright move and decent shot on the right might qualify as a fourth chance. Had we gotten even one of these, the story might have been different. Fourth, Adebayor's goal was simply fantastic. Sure there were defensive problems that let him get in behind, but from that angle who on Earth can score a goal? I saw the replay about 20 times and every time it looks like he has absolutely NO angle, and that the ball starts going AWAY from goal, only magically to hit the post and even more magically roll in. Credit to Arsenal, they have a better TEAM than Manchester United (not, I think, better individual players); they defended against us very well and they weren't rattled by the pressure we applied. West Ham tightened up defensively in the second half and avoided embarrassment, but that took a lot away from our attack. And even though the players filling in did well, we REALLY missed Parker and Solano, and then Ljungberg, too. I think Cole showed he's superb at winning the ball. He's constantly improving at this and at laying it off for others. I'd just like to see him add a really dangerous strike to this. He was terrific against Arsenal. Pantsill still looked to be enjoying himself, and getting in some good play. Noble once again made some fine corner kicks (is he learning from Nobby?), so there was a lot to be pleased with. I think perhaps we made a mistake by trying to play against Arsenal the same way we played against Manchester United. Different teams demand different tactics. Might it have been better to allow them all their fancy passes in the first two thirds and tighten up in the last third? Wear themselves out, most probably. Either that or score 5 goals! But I can't question Curbs' 4-5-1 -- what else could we have done? COYI, there's some revenge needed against Citeh. Onwards and Upwards.

Some of the comments on here

Some of the comments on here are just ridiculous...sell Ashton??? Anyone with half a brain will know that Ashton is potentially the next Shearer. Power, strong in the air and great finishing as well as good holding skills. Its absurd to say we should sell him and buy Bent. Bent proved a good player at Charlton...what has he done at Spurs so far? I would take Ashton over Bent anyday. Ashton has been out for a full season..he's know back to almost full fitness...he needs games. He cant do too much too soon. Why Cole is preferred to Ashton at the moment is a mystery to me and a worry. Ashton is 100% better than Cole even if he's not fully fit..when he came on against Man U..he instantly brought players into the game with good short passes. Cole played well too granted...but correct me if I am wrong in thinking that forwards need to score goals especially when they are up front on their own. Cole doesnt seem to have the confidence to score from an open goal.

hammerthon Dean Ashton has

hammerthon Dean Ashton has shown us that he can play. It was this good form that put him into the England squad which of course led to the long term injury he incurred. Since his return there have been glimpses of the 'pre injury' Dean Ashton, but certainly not consistently enough to have him back in the mind of the England manager(s)or on the wish list of other premiership managers. If you are looking for a striker in January it is probably because your team is underperforming. What you don't need is someone who is yet to fully recover from injury (or prolonged absence)and who appears to have an inflated opinion about his own ability. Although I was always a big Ashton fan (who could ever forget the way he played in that cup final?), I have grown increasingly impatient with his surly attitude towards team mates, fans and (allegedly) the manager. If the issue is all about who starts, then he needs to put himself about even more than Carlton Cole. He needs to significantly increase his workrate and he needs to be play with commitment to the club and the progress of the club. There was some paper talk earlier in the year concerning Ferguson's alleged interest in Dean Ashton. He wouldn't last 5 minutes at Old Trafford with his current attitude, workrate, and general performance. I think the same would apply for him at Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and any other club he may believe would come looking to sign him if he reqests a transfer. And the biggest news for Dean Ashton is that his performance at this point in time does not warrant first eleven selection at West Ham. The Arsenal defence was more troubled by Cole on his own than by Ashton and Camara working together. When Deano realises what is acceptable at our club I am sure he will either step up or do the honorable thing.

ashton is waaaaaaaay better

ashton is waaaaaaaay better than bent

Why are so many writing of

Why are so many writing of Dean Ashton so soon? This is a player with bags of potential who has just been unlucky with injuries! What he needs is a good run in the team and with games at home against City in the Cup and Fulham at home this is a great chance for him to be given 90 mins in each to gain match fitness and the fans to get behind him and show how much we value him.Surely an 80% fit Ashton offers more than a fully fit Camara and i know Cole has done well but Deano is a better finisher.I for one would rather have Ashton in our team rather than face him.Lets also remember it took Curbishley about 10 games to realise Tevez was any good!We need to keep players like Ashton and good for him making noises about when not being picked,it proves he is fit and ready as he would not want to risk further time out on the sidelines. Also why are so many now wanting Bent to sign?Back in July he was just a good Championship player when he overlooked us for Spurs. As far as im concerned he has gone backwards not forwards since going to Spurs and he can't be all that as not only Jol but now Ramos want play him!For the same monet that Bent would cost i would prefer Defoe,a proven goalscorer in the Premiership and a perfect foil for Ashton.Lets not forget Ashton has only started 8 times and scored 5 goals this season a very good return. So please lets not be negative towards Dean Ashton...

You have to say to your self

You have to say to your self if dean ashton was to leave, who is going to buy him. i dont see any teams doing better than us with big enough funds to be willing to take a chance with a player, who has had such a disasterous time with injury

just saw this on sky:

just saw this on sky: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11685_3015184,00.html curbs said at the end that the goal that eduardo scored was unnacceptable for a defense to concede. and THAT is exactly the kind of goal that ashton scores, line it up- and then shoot. so what curbs is really sayin is that ashton is not good enough to break down class backlines. and lets be honest, cole is doing a better job because although hes not that great, he does what he does quickly. does anybody think that curbs would have played ashton if he thought that ashton could score a few goals against man yoo and arsenal?? of course he would...
Barking Mad Steve's picture

Oh My God! Talk about

Oh My God! Talk about Journalistic license! How do you translate Curbs criticising the defence for letting in a soft goal, as a dig at Ashton? Come on Streaky that has to be the worst case of "he said this, but I think he meant that" that I have ever seen. The reason Ashton didn't start is because we played 4-5-1 and Ashton doesn't suit that role as well as Cole does. If we play 4-4-2 against City on Sat then Deano will start alongside Cole.
On a different subject, I, for one do not want to see Bent come here and agree that Defoe would do a better job. However I reckon if anyone can get Bent in form it's Curbs. I think he has got this squad playing really well and we are seeing performances from players that they have only shown promise of before now. Well done Curbs!!!

Ashton? Well this will get

Ashton? Well this will get some of you going but would it be that bad if he was sold for the right money? Now i would like to keep hold of the lad but let me say a few things that concern me about the Ash Will he when he is fully fit score 20+ goals a season? Will be hold the line as good as Cole? Is his temperment right? All these thing are unanswered at this time but i will say one thing about ashton that you may or may not agree with He is a second striker! what i mean by this is he is good but what we need is a fast small little cottee to play off him and score the 20+ a season In my opionion i believe Bent would be a good bye (fast and can score a goal) and here is the big question for next seasons transfer market where is the little cottee going to come from? abroad? Home?

Good point and also i see

Good point and also i see lately he seem s to be walking around the pitch as tho he owns the place i am a bit worried the old problem of a player thinking he is bigger than the team is going to come up
silverstreak107's picture

yeah man, i noticed that

yeah man, i noticed that too. but i was too caught up in the game to think about it at the time. no player is bigger than the club. people say that ashton wanted to stay and bent wanted to go to the spuds. but i think bent is motivated to play now that he has missed action for so long. i would like to see bent join the frontline and ashton stay for at least the rest of the season to redeem himself if he can. the spurs have so many players at the forward position and it has created a competition at the poition. this kind of competition is good, look at almunia vs. lehmann and how almunia has proven himself. ashton feels he is the king, and sometimes when a person feels he is a king, he stops doing the things that made him the king.

I totally agree

every player has a price,

every player has a price, alex ferguson got rid of players that were detrimental to the team regardless of their skills (van nistlerooy, beckham, heinze,...) and man yoo never looked back. but they have the luxury of of always being in the transfer market for the best players so they can be more wasteful because they know they will sign the next ronaldo or whatever. we, on the other hand can't do that. thats why i think deano will stay put. once all the guys come back we will probably see more of ashton. if u want to see what might be a good partnership, why not wait till bellamy gets back and partnered up with ashton, when the midfield is back (faubert, parker, solano, dyer), the quality of the balls will increase and ashton might thrive with class service. trust me curbs is not looking to sell players at an injury crisis like this, he is looking to strengthen his team any way possible. seriously, only an idiot would sell a good striker when we have a shortage of healthy players... but once again, every player has a price and no player is bigger than the club
silverstreak107's picture

deanos not going anywhere

deanos not going anywhere while bellamy is out and camara is playing like a twat... honestly, the problem with deano is that he is slow. hes put on a lot of muscle or fat or whatever u want to call it and this has slowed him down. hes a great finisher, as long as the ball falls to him in the right place and he has a second to line it up and power a line drive (he always has his head down when striking). hes really easy work for defenders if he works that way. look at the goals hes scored... hes a mix between robbie keane and blackburns tugay: HE HAS TO WAIT FOR A CHANCE TO COME TO HIM. curbs decision to bench him is a tactical one because crowding the midfield put teams off... it was also a personnell decision because the class backlines faced in the last two games would have made quick work of his slow reaction time. talk of deano leaving in january is not realistic but he needs to prove to curbs that he can be effective while not being a weakness to the offense. i hope to see him improve and score goals again because he is a top player if he fine-tunes his game.

Dean Ashton is a well paid

Dean Ashton is a well paid professional. To wake-up after a year-off and find oneself with too much '...muscle or fat...' is unacceptable. If he has a pie disorder then he deserves a taste of the 'Fat-Frank' treatment. One man couldn't carry ...couldn't carry Ashton, one man and his forklift truck, etc, etc
silverstreak107's picture

i also have to say that west

i also have to say that west ham united are not a full team yet because we have injuries. give ten injuries to man yoo or the gunners and they wouldn't break the top four. to be honest, im in awe of the points that we have taken from games and to think we lost the most games last season! the win against man yoo was such a high point, i was watching the match on the telly and the roar i heard when the final whistle was blown kept me upbeat even through the loss at arsenal. we need to wait for all the guys to come back and then we will see WEST HAM UNITED.

i think we should look into

i think we should look into signing bradley johnson from northampton. he's a attacking creative left footed central midfielder and with the injuries he would be a cheap solution to an creative midfielder. but it looks like he's on his way to Leicester. trust me i watch northamptons home games as i live up here now and he is really gd and at the age of just 20 is very promising. hammers till i die

According to SSN the telegraph have an article saying Curbs is chasing D Bent. We have been expecting it but A. Does anyone believe this? and B. Does anyone really want him here?
I don't want to see him here I think he's way too overpriced even at £10mil and there's no guarantee we will get him for that. I do think we need a striker but not him.
West Ham Till I Die

If we sign Bent and get rid

If we sign Bent and get rid of Ashton then we can all kiss goodbye to the traditional West Ham way of playing and welcome the Charlton way, long ball, long ball, long ball.No flair , no entertainment. Even the papers are picking up on this as in todays Mail Quote 'What West Ham wanted for Xmas was the West Ham way not the Charlton way'. I echo this does Curbs know what he is doing to our footballing traditions....

Could explain why Deano has

Could explain why Deano has been sulking since the Blackburn game. However I've had a look in the Telegraph and it's not an article as such, just a mention of transfer targets for each of the premiership clubs. I rate Deano more highly then Bent. Ashton wanted to come here while Bent didn't. There's something not right at the moment with his attitude but when at his peak Deano is the most feared English striker bar none.

come on lets smell the

come on lets smell the coffee - Deano was at Norwich and we went for him - Bent was a chalton and us and the spuds went for him - Now i love this club as do all supporters but lets take the Bent (Not a westham fan like a noble) we go for him just surviving the drop then the spurs go for him pushing so they thought at the time for the champs league (hahah) the point is if you have no affliation for the irons you would and i hate saying this but on last season you would go for the spursssihatesayingit spurs

Looking at psysioroom, as

Looking at psysioroom, as ever we are top of the injury league by a long way. Also, the majority of our injurys are groin or muscle strains. Surely this cannot be just down to bad luck! I wonder how much time they spend on stretches or maybe they are doing too much. Either way, they need to seriously review there fitness coach as something is despratly wrong. The good news is that according to the website, a lot of the injured players have a the 5th Jan as their return date. I wonder how accurate that is? On the Aston front, I think that he is a bit arrogant to think he has automatic selection. Like Cole and other sqaud members, he needs to take his chances and win his place back. As for a move, would other clubs want him based upon what his has done this season? I think Deano is tops, but he is no Tevez right now. He needs to let his football do the talking! COYI.......

I think your spot on

I think your spot on monkeyboy about Ashton, great player when he can be bothered. If he thinks he can just walk into the team and not earn his place then maybe he would like to take his chance elsewhere. We do not need ego's at this club but proffessionals and people who want the best for West Ham not themselves...I think if Bent were to sign we would have the same problem with him also.

only a whisper but i heard

only a whisper but i heard deano had handed in a transfer request as he is not happy at not starting. now not saying its true just letting everyone know. as for freddie he can now take a run and jump after blowing kisses to the arsenal fans as he left the pitch. what a mug. his west ham career must be over now. stupid amount of wages for a has been thats injured every other game. get rid of hima and bring in giles barnes who had bags of potential. he can play on both wings and as a striker off the front man.

Actually I don't think there

Actually I don't think there was anything wrong with that at all... We all know he's not a born and bred West Ham fan... But he's being paid to do a job here and if he wants to do that then that's all we need him to do. It's like Tevez giving us a Hammers salute, it's just paying his respects for the support. HOWEVER - I would be happy for us to buy Giles Barnes (even though he's not impressed much after coming back)...
Barking Mad Steve's picture

What are you on about? Get

What are you on about? Get rid of Freddie what he did is no different to Tevez giving us crossed arms Hammers style. Most of Freddies career was at Arsenal and he got a great reception from them, rightly so. The last few times he's played for us he has looked our most creative player, the trouble is playing him too soon every time but that has a lot to do with him being eager to prove the likes of you that he has got what it takes to wear the Claret and Blue shirt.
West Ham Till I Die

Ashton, apparently, is

Ashton, apparently, is unhappy at the moment at not being in the team from the start, but Curbs has little choice. When playing the top teams he has opted for a five man midfield with one up front and Carlton has done a far better job in this role than Ashton would. Deano needs someone like Bellamy alongside him and I'm sure once he's fit we will see the two of them spear-heading the attack. Likewise, when we play Fulham I would think Curbs will revert to 4-4-2 and we could see Cole and Ashton together if Bellers isn't fit. Ashton needs to be patient or work even harder than Cole does. My other concern is midfield where we badly need a 12 goals a season man. All the top sides have midfielders who score a lot of goals (Lampard, Ronaldo, Fabregas, Gerrard, Cahill) and we have nobody. OK, Bowyer has four so far, but let's be honest, all of us are probably pretty surprised at even that meagre tally. Noble needs to work on this side of his game because he has the ability. Finally, well done everyone at West Ham in 2007. At the end of last season and for the first half of this we have all been truly proud of you. The team committment has been outstanding and if we can only get on top of our injury problems and get more consistency at home then what's left of this season could be a memorable one.

good point rotherfield

good point rotherfield hammer. when you look at our midfield noble is too young i think to be relied on to be our attackive spark. dyer wont be back for a long time, im not even going to say anything about lbm and etherington. and who knows how soon faubert will fit in to premierleague football. we have now proved we are capable of easily maintaining a mid table spot, so i think we should look to sign 2 or 3 foreign talents to spice things up.
Barking Mad Steve's picture

No mention of Parker? I

No mention of Parker? I think when Parker and Bowyer are both fit and playing we will be fine for goals from midfield, they will set up plenty more too.
One bit of news, according to SSN we have sold Hogan Ephrian to QPR for an undisclosed fee. Anyone hear any more on that one?

i make you about spot on

i make you about spot on Rotherfield. The days of strikers standing hands-on-hips while his team-mates do the work are long gone, even with massive teams. Look at the work rate of players like Torres, Rooney, Tevez etc. Cole is in the team on merit, Ashton must work harder. I 100% agree about a creative attacking midfielder. They don't grow on trees though and we need to be careful not to buy some over-priced prima-donna who won't tackle or do any donkey work. The bottom line is you can't carry passengers in modern football.

I`m a little disappointed to notice that no one has mentioned the inclusion of 2 of our promising youngsters being in the squad for the Arse game, they are our future a damn site more so than the likes of too old cast offs or overrated and over priced prima donnas.....IE Bent !! . The only inclusion (IMO) we need to get for our squad is someone to find out why we have so many injuries so frequently, as stated by so many of you there has got to be something drastically wrong with our training regime or facilities. If this report is true (which I somehow doubt) only 3 players will still be injured for Saturdays game and Bellamy will be `fit` next week. http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php

I'm sure these dates are when players are expected to be back in full training, and many of them have "doubtful" in brackets, however the fact that we could see as many as 10 players back in the squad by the end of January is very exciting, especially if Faubert and Bellamy are both back with us soon. I think Feb will be a good month for us and we could see a finish to this season close to the one we had last year. So Europe is still a realistic option, just!

With the team getting back

With the team getting back to shape in a couple of weeks or so, I really fancy us for the cup this year - if only we can put a team out out for Saturday. As for Ashton, he's not the player he was. He's not jumping, avoiding tackles and has lost some speed. It'll come back but he's gotta be honest with himself and stop sulking and living in the past. I doubt very much if any offers will come in for him just yet, if anything a few £4-5m offers for carlton will be tabled.

Faubert, Dyer, Bellamy and

Faubert, Dyer, Bellamy and other have not been injured in training but playing games. Its the pace they play at and the mistimed tackles.
