West Ham To Move Quickly For Reo-Coker Replacement

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 28 May, 2007 - 19:33.
Jason Koumas has emerged as a Hammers transfer target following the Baggies defeat in the Championship play off final against Derby, a result that will also see the return to the Premiership of ex-Hammer Stephen Bywater who kept goal with some aplomb for the Rams. Koumas has been linked with a move to the Boleyn before and would welcome the chance to join up with his Wales International colleagues James Collins and Danny Gabbidon, it is unlikely that the player will stay at the Hawthorns and the only question is really which club he goes to as West Brom will need to cash in one of their prize assets sooner rather than later. At 28 years old Koumas is still young but is an extremely experienced player who did not look out of place when playing in the Premiership, he does have a bit of an attitude but has shown that he can be worth going the extra mile for, he has also remained relatively injury free throughout his career, a point that would not have gone unnoticed by Alan Curbishley who will be looking to avoid the sort of injury crisis that almost saw Hammers relegated. West Brom will hold out for as much cash as possible, but the prospect of playing for West Ham will probably provide Koumas and his agent with the impetus to push the deal through. - Ed

Koumas would be a good signing as he can play on either wing and was by far the best player on teh park yesterday. There are so many people on here knocking people like Nicky Shorey, Koumas and Scott Parker and saying we should buy this player and that player all of whom are either keen to play in Europe or would cost a small fortune. It's lunacy. We need a strong squad and as there are a large number of people on their way out the club not every player we will sign can cost 6, 7, 8 million because the reported £50million just won't spread that far. I believe the bulk of Curbs war chest is currently positioned to try and sign Carlos Tevez. If you look at the players leaving I think the rest of his spending is pretty much limited to what he brings in:
  • Reo Coker out 9 million - Scott Parker in 7 million
  • Konchesky out 3.5 million - Nicky Shorey in 4 million
  • Harewood & Mullins out - Darren Bent in (at an extra cost of 4 million)
  • Etherington out 2 million - Jason Koumas in 3 million
  • Dailly out free, Mears out 1.5 million, Paintsil out 1 million
  • Davenport out 2.5 million - Young in 3 million
  • Carroll out free - Carson in 4 million
That works out as 21.5 million in and 29.5 million spent + Tevez, which is probably around the 50 million that the press are speculating about. I would like to see another winger come in - someone like Barnetta and in an ideal world we would offload Quashie and sign Sissoko but I can't see Curbs being able to keep that many people happy? Despite this I think that is a very strong squad for next season with the right attitude we could be pushing for Europe (I mean look at Reading, Portsmouth and Bolton!)

michael kieghtly of wolves would be a great signing.. scores goals at every level. for 2m quid could be worth a gamble. and if he doesnt perform sell him back to a championship side for a mill. he has gr8 potential and is a goal scorer. left winger or right wing he plays.

Hows about Simon Davies from Fulham??he was good at Tottenham a few years ago to the tune that Liverpool under Houlier bid £8mills for him, He got injured at Everton .but he is wasting away at fulham. He played with Ethers at Peterboro , so they can link up again, anyone agree??

He's one of the most over-rated players in football, and would only be a step backwards for the team.Anyway,Curbs is getting rid of Etherington,so he wouldn't team up with him anyway.

if we can't attract players like parker and shorey to west ham what is the point in having so much money to spend when no one wants to come to us
Submitted by kingsgate hammer on 29 May, 2007 - 14:35.
we can attract anyone with the money we have, we got lucas neill over liverpool, money talks just need eggy to encourage curbs to strap a pair on and dive in with the big boys, cahill will come if we give everton the money they want as will many others of better quality than shorey riggot koumas young etc. portsmouth just signed sully muntari! and are they a bigger club? are they playing in europe? no neither are reading so shorey would come if we wanted him personally id rather see 3 really good players than a dozen lurpers like the ones previously mentioned, get rid of plenty first, we aint gonna be relegated so no worries there, like i said before lucas neill was bowled over by eggys ambitious targets and im pretty sure riggot and koumas wasnt among them! defoe is c**p and has not improved since he left us, i would rather have zamora any day at least he learnt how to hold the ball up now.
Submitted by Iron Joe on 29 May, 2007 - 14:04.
With everton eyeing jakielka maybe it will be a bit easier to pinch cahill and if we still think we need better centre backs then a sneaky bid for primus as pompey have got to new first choice centre backs. p.s. If we buy koumas it will be a signal that we're happy with another relegation scrap.

yep i agree, if the so called transfer rumours regarding us are true im a little bemused! eggy says we got 50 odd mil (apparently) and the targets that curbs is going for makes us look like we just won the championship play off and have 5 or 6 mil to try and consolidate by buying prem rejects or best of the championship, come on lets show some money or the likes of neill are gonna be p***ed off given the promises eggy made to him, we got the money so lets invest in quality players that will have a future when the step up in class becomes apparent, not players that we have to flog on the cheap in a years time coz they cant cut the mustard, think eggy gonna have to outline his ambition to curbs to see if he is up for the challenge.

All this doom and gloom.Same story every year who's in, who's out, he is no good, he is good, we should get him, dont get him. I am confident that AC and Eggy will put a good team together. It is not going to be a team of all stars, anyway who wants that look at Chelsea probably one of the most talented teams in the prem but also probably the most boring. West Ham teams have always been built on a platform of playing entertaining football. Curbs comes from this culture and this culture is why Eggy loves West Ham so dont expect this to change, why should it,it is what makes us love to be Hammers fans. So lets get behind the management on there signings lets encourage them to take risks on players that fit the West Ham football culture. I for one am sick and tired of seeing little money grabbing rich kids sulking because they had to run a bit for their money.Throw in the mix their slimey little agents and you end up in the mess we had at the start of last season. So lets not look for big name prima donnas lets get some lads in that love the club and love to play football. Thats the kind of players and team that make me buy my season ticket not a bunch pretty boys with egos bigger than their cars.

Nev this Koumas rumour has not been mentioned anywhere today, think his agents told you porkeys mate
    Submitted by Anonymous on 29 May, 2007 - 14:31.
Lets stop critising Curbs for wanting koumas! After all there is NO prove he wants him! Its quite likely its either a rumour or something his agent made up! so why should we give curbs stick on that basis? This idea about lets consolidate is crap! Thats what we would do if Brown was here and it would be right, but Eggert is here now and STOP living in the past! If we consolidate we will loose the momentum to become a top 6 club. Yes we only finished 15th but do we want to end up a mid table team every bloody year? I agree we cant get World class players to come yet but the way the team played at the end of the season they showed they have it in them to challenge for the eufa cup spot. In January Curbs stated that players bought in in mid season should strengthen the TEAM and not the SQUAD. Lets see if hes a man of his word! Its one thing not getting the Ronaldo's of this world but we should be in for players of the quality of Cahill, nolan Barton, Bridge and Barnetta. This would ALL improve our TEAM and make Eufa cup a better reality

I think we need a bit of a reality check here guys! As much as I would love some of the World Superstar names mentioned to come to us, the truth is, at the moment they wont!!!! The positive attitiude of Eggy is a real boost & his dream is the same as ours, but we must walk before we can run, a lesson learned after last seasons false dawn. Curbs now needs to build a good, solid core around which the GREAT players can be added. At the moment we are not even 100% guaranteed Premiership football, would you chose to join us if that was the case? This is going to be our biggest problem this summer, the uncertainty. Dig in fellas, its gonna be a bumpy ride. Come on Irons

i know he might be a decent squad player ect. but we have quashie for that lark. waqt happened to making a statement in d transfer market? van der vaart etc. are currently a bit unrealistic but huddlestone i feel would be a great signing and a realistic one as well. i'm not convinced by curbs competence in d transfer market but i hope that will change. Huddlestone, pedersen and cahill wud be good but i dunno if cahill wud come yet. a top 8th finish this year will give us a great platform and then we can bring in d world class player. also we shudn't just buy players for the sake of it just because we have the money. we will need some for next year, when we will be in a much better position to bring in world class talent.

I dont think we should be looking at this as a replacement for NRC. Take NRC out of the equation and look at the player and what he does. He will be a very good back up in midfield he can basically play right across the line in the middle, so he will be very usefull as a sub when things are not happening in midfield or injuries. This guy is a good player and I can see why we want him but I dont think anyone with half a brain would link him to replacing NRC. Plus he has picked up from the press the tag line of best player outside the prem. So good signing if we get him but Eggy and Curbs will not stop there in the middle of the park

Come on lets be realistic,Champions league and UEFA Cup!Next season is again another season to consolidate our place in the Premier League. After the miracle of the last few months all we can really hope for is a nice start to the season and be around the 30 point mark by christmas! Also lets be realistic on players coming in.Yes,the foundations are there in Green,Neill,Upson,Benayoun,Noble and Ashton but the likes of Ribery,Van der Vaart aint going to come to Upton Park YET!!For me the best we could get is Cahill a great box to box player and a scorer of plenty of goals from midfield.Joey Barton, troublesome perhaps but a player of his quality would only improve the West Ham squad.I like Parker, but he always seems to be injured.Other possible and achievable targets are Bentley for the right hand side and a serious bid for Gamst Pederson for the left.I would also opt for Baines rather than Shorey only as i am more familier with Baines and have only taken an intrest in Shorey since he has been linked(how much now he has England status)As much as i would love Carlos Tevez to stay,i don't think he will.So with that in mind we need at least 2 more strikers with Harewood,Kepa and probally Cole on there way.Remember last season how everyone went balistic at the thought of Kanoute returning, well 21 goals this season aint a bad return.Thats why i would make DeFoe my number 1 target(yes,he frigged up and made a mistake)but he would score the goals alongside Ashton.Another target would be Crouch? He looks awfull and uncompromising but again he scores goals and if we got Bentley and Pederson imagine the goals he would score from their crosses. So if we got Baines,Barton,Cahill,Bentley,Pderson,DeFoe and Crouch UEFA Cup could be a possibility?

Lets not get carried away so soon. How do we know what Curbs has planned? I think Koumas is an okay squad player...versatile and able to play all over the midfield which is more useful than Mullins or Etherington who can only play in one midfield position basically. So he would be a useful squad member for sure. Keeping the balance of the team right. However, I dont see him as the replacement for NRC. Maybe Curbs has someone like Parker lined up for that..and if so, we should stop panicking. It depends on who else comes in before we can say Koumas this or Koumas that. Every team needs versatile midfielders in the squad. Koumas can score goals and is useful with freekicks and his ability to play anywhere will be useful in a long season.

All this speculation is doing my head in.... Some of you are expecting too much from curbs and co.Who really expects tevez to stay(love him to)or to sign world class players,it ain't gonna happen. Some of you are expecting top six or champions league this coming season, you are having a laugh. we will be lucky to get top 10 and we all know that...come on.I'll settle for that to begin with. koumas is no tevez, but of what i've seen of him,he ain't a bad player,we could do worse. This i think is the only type of player you will get coming to west ham this summer. With teams like liverpool, man utd and chelsea on the sniff around we havn't got a hope, yes we can dream but it ain't gonna happen. Anyone got a time machine on them,we can fast forward a few weeks and put us out of our misery!

Bad news. Why would we want someone who may not have looked completely out of place in the Premiership but who absolutely looked at home in the Championship. If we want Champions League or UEFA cup football then we need to be aiming higher than Jason bloody Koumas. Does anyone doubt the fact that we'll be a poorer side minus Reo Coker and plus Koumas?
    Submitted by Anonymous on 29 May, 2007 - 11:07.
This was one of my worries about Curbs. He seems to be a good man manager, but is he good enough in the transfer market? Apart from Neil, his January signing wasn't all that! Pards was the same, small town mentality. Regardless of egos, our side should have been build around mascerino & tevez, not some of the no hopers we turned out. All that stuff about not being settled, doesn't seem to be the case at Liverpool. If we are going to move to the next level, we need to think big and buy the players that clubs don't want to sell, not aecond rate mis-fits! Anyway, if Curbs doesn't get it right, he won't be there sfter next season anyway. Eggy is no mug!

What pisses me off is that quote i read from Tevez saying he's flattered to be linked with Chelsea. I'm sorry Carlos but in terms of fan base they are nowhere near us in numbers. Their upturn in attendances has only been because they've bought their way to silverware. Why don't players see us as a big club. Okay we are nowhere near the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool for winning things over the years but to label Chelsea one of the big guns is a joke. Everytime they came to Cardiff for a cup final or Charity shield game they could'nt sell out their allocation of tickets. Put us in their position and we could have filled the stadium with just our own supporters, plus the pubs and clubs would have been busy as well. Which is why i think us being linked with all these top players is a bit misleading. When your player of the season thinks Chelsea are a bigger club than West Ham then what hope do we have. Money talks and bull*hit walks as the saying goes. No matter what players sign for us, as long as they put the effort in and know what is expected of them to be wearing the West Ham shirt then we can only give them the support (like no other club can) and get behind them like we always do.

It was Pards' fault that we didn't build around Mash & Tev. When Curbs arrived, the place was a mess. He was limited in who he could buy in Jan and other clubs were putting ridiculous prices on average players cos they knew we were desperate. Upson got injured which you can't blame Curbs for. Boa morte came good in the end and Neill was an inspired signing. Ok Quashie is toilet I'll give you that. But I reckon you've got to give Curbs a chance. If he gets Parker then you must admit that would be a great signing. He did rescue us in the end (with the help of the apache admittedly).

So, we've seen the first of the clear out ... or have we? Who has actually gone? I think we still have Newton, Harewood, Dailey, Teddy, Konchevsky and so on. And meanwhile we appear to be closer to selling NRC than we are to signing anyone of note, and the strongest rumour out there at the moment has us linked to INJURED Luke Young! Ringing any bells for anyone else???

Some of you make me laugh as you know nothing about football!! We only just stayed up last season and now you think we're going to sign every quality player under the sun and finish in the top 6. What we need to do is consolidate this season and then push on. Koumas is a very good player, I know this because I watch a lot of fotball and don't just judge players on their name. Without any past knowledge if I said we could sign Veron, Schevchenko & Morientes or Di Canio, Cantona & Fabregas I know who you would pick and would pobably have had to read comments like 'Di who? - he's not the sort of player we need the trouble maker. '. I was on here when we signed Tevez & Mascherano & people were saying that we were going to be in the Champions League I questioned those people then and I'm sure that it's the same people now saying that this or that player isn't good enough for us.

well done to you first and for most, proving the WHUFC faithful wrong and predicting nothing will come of the these two world class players. truely bravo. but for a minute lets pretend you shared our dream of being a top team, we all no wat the prem is like you cant just sit back and consolidate, thats a total cope out and excuse not to go on to push for eurpe and trophies. the prem changes year in and year out, next year it might be reading year to fall short and be found out, maybe not. who knows. the people on this site and fans with passion and optimism, they want to taste glory like so many of us crave, they are on here not to get down, they just want to bulid a bigger club and attract bigger players in which we build teams around. can u honestly hold ur hands up and say that koumas is a patch on reo-coker, i cant believe u can. so why bring in good championship players like Quashie for example, great champ players but poor prem player. look u say u watch alot of football and i admit i do to, so im basing it on the current crop of players we hav now, and to be honest cant see him being more then a squad at most, not sum one who is going to take te club forward. we need to be flexing of our fanicial arms now and striving to get the top players in even if its putting bids in, at least then teams around us will see we mean business. and to the rest of theppl on here, keep dreaming as sometimes thats all we hav, we need ppl to be optimistic about the club that why were the best supporters in the world. thank you all, you make my day better . Whilst I agree that we should try and keep a bit of a grip on reality over the next few months, I disagree entirely about your notion that we would not have a hope in signing Riquelme. Villereal, who own his contract (although he is currently on loan to Boca Juniors as he's had a falling out with the manager) are currently languishing in 7th place in the spanish league, out of the champions league places, and even out of the uefa cup positions. If we somehow manage to keep hold of Tevez, why couldn't we sign him? A highly regarded compatriot playing for the club and 60 odd grand a week would at least be tempting in my opinion.
    Submitted by Denbighammer on 29 May, 2007 - 18:49.
Riquelme has said that the only club in EUROPE he would play for is Villareal. This lad is quality but he's not the most mentally stable. He is fantastic when things are going well but if you expect him to chase lost causes and fly into tackles like Tevez, you've got another thing coming.

i get what you are saying and i agree we need to consolidate and not get in the position we we in last season ever again.. but things are different now...management is different ... no more terence brown ... we now have someone who knows what they are doing in eggert and he will make funds available for the right type of players ... im saying curbs needs to be a bit more bolder and go for key decent players that can be in the first eleven and contribute from the word go ... not bring in a few squad players to consolidate what we've got ..cos frankly we havent got enough yet... but we will have if he adds right.

Marc H.....I think Koumas could be a first team player on our left hand side. He's certainly better than Etherington & Boa Morte. And to be honest I can't think of any 'quality' player who we could get in for that position. I also hope that we can get in a few players that will again slot straight into the fist team (as well as shipping out some dead wood) & Eggert will do all he can, unlike TB. However, as much as we love the club & know its potential, a lot of star names see us as a yo yo club and these players will take more time to tie up/convince. So I'm not surprised we're being linked with so called lesser players at the moment, a bit of patience is required I feel.
    Submitted by Marc H on 29 May, 2007 - 10:53.
yeah for left wing Koumas could give some competition for Boa morte ... but he's not a proven premiership player is he? hes the same qulaity in my book as the z-man ... flashes of quality sometimes but hardly consistent ... and what we really need throughout the whole team is consistency ... that then breeds confidence and the rest can take care of itself. But we must add some quality ...some real top quality otherwise next season will be a repeat im afraid ... and none of us want that!
    Submitted by Anonymous on 29 May, 2007 - 09:49.
koumas is a decent player. However not good enough for a squad pushing for top 6. He is a squad player at best.

greening is garbage ... we cant keep thinking about signing players without proven top flight ability... if we want to progress ( and i dont mean finishing in the 10th-17th bracket) then we have to buy 4-5 top quality players with ability/flair/experience ... it's all very well buying a few squad players like Koumas to bring on and cover every now and again, but we have to think bigger than that if we want to become a top ten side again...signing players like Parker/Shorey/SWP/J Cole/Bent will help ... and if Curbs has got 30-40m to spend + NRC monies then he has to spend it wisely but he has to pay up to get the quality... none of this 1m /2m Quasie type of player that is gonna add eff eff* all...if he's got the funds then f*cking spend it !!!

I agree with this bloke. Quality rather than quantity. We will only attract good players if we make a statement of intent. Buying chumpionship players will just maintain our mediocrity.

I agree with most, Koumas would only be a squad player at the academy. Curtis Davis would be the better signing from the baggies.i don't think we would pay over the odds for them though coz they're still championship players. we need an experienced centre back. i think Upson is too injury prone. we need another left back (maybe Bridge or Heinze as they're out of favour). definitely 2 centre mids required (at least). i'm all for Scott Parker joining, Curbs knows his game inside out so he would gel quickly. we need another strong, solid and good passer and tackler in the middle, our flair players are on the wings (you can have too many flair players sometimes). Tevez is a must, he'll be even better next season and with Deano along side him, we've got a nice strike force!! as back up to injuries up front we could get D Bent, Gudjonson or even Solskjaer. Definitely Neill for Captain though, he just reaps experience and hunger and has already earned the respect of everyone!!! In reply to the stadium question - how could we name it anything other than The Bobby Moore Stadium. anything else would just be wrong!!!
