What Is It With West Ham And Tottenham Fans

I have been the editor of this site since it's conception in 2000, and am obviously aware of the rivalry between all the London clubs, but I don't understand what gives between West Ham and Tottenham. OK, I was at a Cup quarter final in the eighties when 'Spuds' fans threw bottles at Hammers fans knowing full well that there were lots of 5-12 year olds who were with their parents watching the match at the Boleyn, but that doesn't warrant some of the garbage posted by some of our fans recently. This in no way condones the vast majority of p***ks who support Tottenham who are billy no mates and should have better things to do than to visit other teams websites, it is just to ask what is the problem. As far as I know both West Ham and Tottenham are in London, so along with the Gooners and Chelscum represent the South against the Mancs, Scousers, Geordies and all the rest. Spuds do your stuff with your nearest geographical neighbours ( Arsenal for those who are intellectually challenged) and Hammers watch out for the Millwall Pikey's nicking your wheels. So Come on and get a grip! Oh and by the way, all those of a Tottenham persuasion who have been posting their disingenuous comments, as from tomorrow, all your IP's will be blocked. - ,Ed

You may block my comment if you wish - but I totally agree with you . I have never understood the bitterness between the 2 sets of fans . I have lived in Chadwell Heath all my life but my family are from Hoxton and are Spurs through and through and since 1967 I have followed Spurs . Many of my friends are West Ham season ticket holders and we have a friendly rivalry and none of this ill natured stuff I see on message boards from both sets of fans . I apologise for some of the Spurs fans - I can only put some of their ridiculous comments to the lack of trophies they have seen in recent years . We as Spurs fans need to be honest and say we have won 2 trophies since 1991 . I was lucky enough to see Cup wins in Europe and home in both the 1970's and 1980's and hope we may start winning cups again but realise with the big 4 in England it is getting harder and harder to pick up a trophy . Because of my friends I would be a Spurs fan who would like the Hammers to stay up - and because of the hate of Spurs at your club worry that despite your poor recent form you may turn as over on Sunday .

As a Spurs fan I agree whole heartedly with the main thread of this article,and well written too.After going to a few derbies I have never understood this negative rivalry between the two clubs,it's unnecessary.There was a time when we wanted rival London clubs to do well in Cups if we were knocked out,other than the Arse obviously.Myself and a few other Spurs fans wanted West Ham to beat the scousers last may so much,but it just doesn't happen anymore.I will say there is a lot of vitriol poured out from West Ham fans,the hammers are the only fans that I have heard chant "you're scum and you know you are" at a game not even from the chavs or the Arse.I know at times we are no better,and just as bad.Hey I'd love it to stop,but is it ever?..when did this all start anyway?.

Good comment I think the problem is that the majority of fans are good humoured decent folk. In my group of friends I have arsenal tottenham liverpool fans etc and my uncle is a spud fan and my grand dad charlton, all of these are good people. The problem is our good humour and banter, which is a good thing is upset by about a small amount who will say stupid things to stir up tension and an even smaller faction which just are racist and stupid. I for one am discusted at the anti semetic view that have been stated, but the stirring from spuds fans on here is just a stupid. Lets keep the banter and lose the idiots.

I think the banter between west spam and spuds fans is fun. I was the one on here yesterday who was belating that guy for constant reference to cocks etc. It was fun he looked like an idiot and basically shut up. Then he made one more comment and one or two people make anti-semetic remarks. YOU ARE IDIOTS. Not only because west ham probably have as many jewish fans, I neither know or care if this is actually true, but because it means that your brain doesnt function any more inteligably than ER SPUD JEW if you cant think of a funny retort dont say anything, why do people get wound up by this? The facts are that west ham and tottenham are about the same size club, tottenham are doing better at the moment but look at the facts. We have about the same size fans base, amybe west hams are a bit larger but whatever. Second neither of us have won anything for ten years, or will win anything for ten years. The top teams take everything to seriously now we dont even have the carling cup anymore. The sad fact is that we are with a number of teams Man City Fulham Aston Villa Everton Middlesbourgh Leeds birmingham etc that will always make up the middle and bottom of the prem and top of the champs, sometimes we will do slightly better and delude ourselves that this will be our year but when that does happen our best players will be taken by the teams above us. Sorry that mean Lennon for you guys so let carry on the banter, but maybe with a bit more fun and inteligence?

I love watching West Ham

I love watching West Ham play cos i like to see how spurs would av been if they kept useless players like etherington, zamora and the rest! There should be a good

There should be a good relationship between the clubs with the amount of transfers that they have shared going back to Greaves, Peters, Paul Allen through to Kanoute, Etherington, Zamora, Defoe & Carrick and its not like a spurs arsenal situation where if you've played for one you will never be accepted at the other. And over the years, if Spurs couldnt win something I would hope west ham or chelsea would rather than the scum arsenal or northen monkeys. But the reason we lost 4th place last year was because Jol underestimated how much west ham hate spurs and it shocked me how they treated it as such a cup final to knock us into 5th and allow those foreign, cheating moaners into the champions league as one of ENGLAND's representative teams! They lost my respect that day, as before that I would have rather seen west ham beat any other team into the champions league. To see them celebrating at that burned me up and what goes around comes around, as one week later they were crying at the cup final and now they face certain relegation and another 4 years of rebuilding! Good! And by the way - a big club is defined by its trophy cabinet and fanbase. Tottenham tick both boxes on that. West ham only half tick both.

I think it is partly a lack of rivalry for us both as Tottenham are a little tiny pooey side compared with Arsenal, they cant compete it is as big as the mismatch on the field of Us and Millwall. Tottenham had there good years as have we and both clubs to have a long and predigous history but Tottenham have missed out for a long time now sat in the shadow of their immediate rivals for many a year and it hurst them so they look for a way to release there anger and bang it comes to us.

Actually Nev, I thought there was an east end - west end rivalry emerging between the Hammers and Chelsea; maybe it was just a media thing to try and replicate the Arsenal - Spurs relationship? Of course you are correct, it's not the same having this relationship with the two clubs in different divisions (consider Verona / Chievo or even Inter / Milan), so Millwall would seem to be appropriate - and easy to dislike!

yes, well done for last season - you certainly DID stop us getting CL qualification last season. hats off to you, but to say that WH have more history and tradition than Spurs is, quite frankly, ridiculous. If you add all the cups up that each side has won respectively, its embarrassingly tilted in tottenham's favour. We are also a richer club than you, with a larger fanbase, sell more games out and are NOT embroiled in a relegation dogfight, so HOW do you make the claim that WH are a bigger club than Spurs - please elaborate in a polite and informative way. Well said mate - But the thing I dont get is that earlier this season before spurs beat the hammers 1-0, Pardew said in an interview that spurs were "our big rivals" - to be honest the statement confused me greatly...
