Cottagers v Hammers No Z Man

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 22 February, 2008 - 17:24.
Bobby Zamora has not been included in the squad to face Fulham at Craven Cottage this Saturday. Many fans had hoped to see a new look Hammers attack led by the Z Man but it was deemed too early for him to be pitched into what will be a very physical and desperate match, as all matches against relegation threatened teams will be....Of course there will be many memories of Bobby Moore, as a player he graced both teams and his loss is still a staggering blow. It will be 15 years since his untimely death, he will be up there with Johnny Lyall and Ron Greenwood looking down, let's hope the players give them a match to be proud of. - Ed West Ham (from): Green, Wright, Neill, Pantsil, Spector, Ferdinand, Upson, Gabbidon, McCartney, Bowyer, Faubert, Ljungberg, Noble, Mullins, Collison, Etherington, Boa Morte, Ashton, Cole, Camara.

Ricksta (Hammer time) Slightly disapponited to hear the lads (crowd) on Saturday giving the team stick considering all the problems we've had lately. It looks like we have a desent backer and some good young playes coming through for the future. The team needs some consistency and time, so once we get rid of our injury problems i think we'll see a diffrent team. LETS GET BEHIND OUR WEST HAM AND TURN OVER THOSE SHXX HEADS IN BLUE AND REALLY SHOW EM WHERE TO STICK THE BLUE FLAG West Ham till i die

I think all the comments about who should be Hammer of the year make interesting reading. Almost every squad member has been given a mention which only goes to show that this year we have been a TEAM with everyone pulling their weight and playing their part. Well done the lads. Now let's get stuck in to Chelsea - I can't wait.

I really don't get some people on this site, they are never happy. How can anyone knock what curbs has done this season? With the injury jinx, I would be surprissed if he has been able to put out the same side for more than one match. Of course we all want more, but let's be realistic and give credit where it's due. What would you prefer, a sexy football relegation dog fight, or solid performances to ensure a mid table (or better finish!)? Let's get the basics right and the flair will follow. I am certainly enjoying this season much more that the last one. We can get any number of staff to assist the manager, but at the end of the day, we need players with the right attitude and passion for the club. COYI..

I agree with you monkeyboy, I am enjoying this season a lot more than last when our sexy football nearly got us relegated!! As they say, slowly slowly catchee monkey so lets see a gradual improvement for the next couple of seasons instead of trying to run before we can walk.

I'm glad that I have read some of the comments above Lads, after reading some of the active topic forums I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one still supporting Curbs.

no mate your not , we could just as easily been playing in the championship and some people have quickly forgot that . the guy will need atleast a couple seasons to put his stamp on the team and we have to remember we are not the only team supposedly spending money , apart from the lower few they all are ..,and for the injuries not going to even start.. If some of the guys on here want an example of panic and change look at newcastle!! nuf said

And Freddie looks the age of his number haha. Didn't know he was that little.. What is he? 5'4"? Still.... from the sounds of it I wouldn't mind having them 2 playing up front.. I genuinely think we should stick Freddie in against Chelsea, at least on the bench - noone's gonna play with more passion and effort then him.. and with his eye for the goal - who knows.

Does look like a kid has run on the pitch dont it, but if hes good enough and to be fair I havnt seen him play so dont know, id say give him a few games and break him in. Problem is do you take that as a risk when we are not far off the European place and want to push on, hard one to call.

we have to get someone in if we want to improve, i just think curbs hasnt got the tactics to improve us going forward. Lets face it we are dull, boring, predictable and just so poor attackively even with injurys. i would like to bring in a big name because we need some one whom foreign talant will be impressed by.

Oh, JJ ...what's '...attackively...' when it's at home? And, since when have my Mighty Hammers had to grovel to impress any whimsy of 'foreign talent'? Who the chuff are you trying to copy here if it isn't the fickle prole's of plastic clubs? I wont go into into your claim of '...dull, boring, predictable...' but maybe you'd like to change the tune? WHERE WERE WE 12 MONTHS AGO? Basically, we're on track, bro...
Submitted by jumpjump on 26 February, 2008 - 19:40.
you make me laugh you really do. oh well look were we were last season blah blah blah. Fuk last season this season we have THROWN valuable points away because we are so shite in the final third. And your claim since when have we had to grovel to impress. Who is talking of groveling i am saying with curbs in charge a man virtually unknown past the premier league, what top names playing their trade abroad will be impressed with him and descide to throw away the suny beaches of spain etc for the dull and dirty city streets of East London. As for our youth team set up when are we going to start seeing our kids on the feild because at the moment i can see them getting a look in the squad is huge, full of profesional players from what i have seen of curbs hes not one to take a chance and so i doubt we will see the likes of tomkins, sears etc over names like spector and camara on the squad sheet.
Submitted by A Hammer on 28 February, 2008 - 10:53.
I dispute that we've '...THROWN...' points away other than the TEAM losing concentration on the field: That's on the field, bro - not in the dug-out. The team has had many changes and that's not ideal ...but neither is the consistent slagging of Curb's who has only had the job thirteen months. Laugh if you wish, but my loyalty to my club will continue to give Curb's longer than it takes for his name-plate to dry on his office door. I mention 'grovelling' because you alluded that we needed to '...impress foreigners...' Well, we are West Ham and I enjoy the major respect from other supporters for not sucking up to poncy trends, give or take kerry katona's biscuit-baron being our uber-gaffer. This guess may be dodgy but would you have sacked Sir Alf for not winning the World Cup in 1962?

its being reported in the press that west ham are lining up that "footballing legend" gialuca nani, "who?" i hear you all cry, well he took brescia to the dizzy hieghts of 7th in the italian league, yes SEVENTH wahooo, aparantly he was interviewed by curbs himself, says it all really. The power of this football club to underwhelm never fails to amaze me.if we must look abroad for talent surely we must only be going for the top drawer stuff.once again with been with linked with all the top names and once again it looks like will be getting mr.nobody. super, smashing, great!

Mate, take a chill pill! Trust the board to find someone who knows about footy. How the hell can you be so negative about our potential director of football? I have no idea what the role really entails. I'm sure you need DIFFERENT qualities from a manager. So what if he's only taken Brescia to 7th? At least he is a football man. What do you suggest as an alternative? Why don't we pay top dollar for Mourinho maybe? So he can leave us after a couple of months to manage Liverfool? We don't need someone who is the next big thing as our technical director and we don't need someone with experience who will always be sought after by other teams. We need someone who knows what they are doing!
Submitted by asheshammer on 26 February, 2008 - 10:15.
Yeah, I was underwhelmed, too. This Nani doesn't even have a Wikipedia article! The one possible good thing is if he was interviewed by Curbs himself. I understand your frustration about it; but one thing we don't want is the kind of friction that emerged at S***s between Jol and THEIR technical director. Nor do we want friction between Carr (youth development) and Nani (foreign player signings). It needs to be very clear who is in charge of the final decisions on team selection. I for one really want to see what Sears, Tomkins, Collison, and company are made of. I want to see West Ham develop to the point where they can hold on to their young talent, not sell them off for a profit. Let's hope there's more in Gianluca Nani than the signing of Adam Vass!!!

7th Place in Sight! Everton's destruction of City leave them on 44 points from 27 matches, compared to 40 from 26 for us. Blackburn (42), Portsmouth (44), and City (44), all from 27 matches, are all in sight now, if we knuckle down and do the business against Chelsea. And we owe it to Chelsea to beat them, after how well we played at Stamford Bridge. By the way, some more statistics that put WHUFC in a favourable light: (1) we are equal 5th in the league on current form, even AFTER Wigan and Brum. So let's stop knocking our team -- that's European qualification level. (2) We are actually not so bad in goals scored (equal 11th, and close to City, who are on 34), especially when taking into account the injuries to our strikers. (3) We are equal 5th in defence, a record to be very proud of. (4) We are now ahead of both Blackburn and City on goal difference, with a match in hand. Put these things all together, and you can see that we are still right in the competition. Now, we all know it ain't gonna come easy with Chelsea, Liverpool and some crappy team I can't name in the space of eight days, but let's all get behind our team NOW, and STRONGLY, and let the voices ring at Upton Park this weekend, 'cos we are in it with a real chance. COME ON YOU IRONS !!!

Also - just for the trio - My vote for player of the season right now... Couldn't pick.. I'd say top 3 are Green / Ferdinand / Upson. Can't forget McCartney though - has been so consistently good, and Carlton - overcame so much negativity to earn himself a regular place in the first team.. OK so he hasn't quite developed the finishing as well as we'd all like but the majority of shots he had against Fulham were nigh on impossible anyway and he didn't do half bad with them! If only there was a "Most Improved Hammer" haha.
Submitted by Barking Mad Steve on 25 February, 2008 - 23:43.
I'd have to say Noble is still a contender. Things like taking that penalty at Liverpool are what picks the whole team up. If we were behind in a game I would want Noble on the pitch. Win's free kicks and takes them well too.

I'd love to see the likes of Reid, Tomkins, Collison, Stokes and now Sears get some first team action. We've produced so much great young talent, more than any other English club and I think things look VERY bright for English football with our youth. As I've said before I'm proud that we have the amount of English / British players that we do (especially when you look at some 'English' teams). I know the Prem is a different game.. just because they do well in the youths / reserves doesn't mean they can cut it in the big one yet.... But I think Curbs should show them (especially these 5) in the first team even if for a brief spell at the end of a game. Instead of bringing on Spector (for instance).. put one of them in the game - one thing's for sure they'd play their heart out to impress the boss. With our injury crisis before as well it would have been perfect.. I know Curbs HAS included them and put Reid on a few times - and this is probably to get them around the first team for the future, to know the drill - but I really want to see some of them in action.. Who knows, it may be exactly what Curbs is building up to and they're not ready JUST yet but ... that doesn't make me any less impatient. Let The Academy of football shine. Freddie Sears' record is outstanding so why not give him a runout when a game's dying out - see what he can inject into it with his passion and eye for the goal? I think Tomkins would be excellent also. Come on the youth!
Submitted by TVG on 26 February, 2008 - 14:03.
Absolutely agree with this sentiment. There should be a couple of them on the bench for each game from now on. At the moment it seems that our academy is a bit of a feeder for the Championship. The youngsters deserve the chance to impress in the first team. I see that Spud's scorer last night has the moniker Troy Archibald-Henville, sounds like a tw@t.

Submitted by Rotherfield Hammer on 25 February, 2008 - 21:09.
If we get to a stage in the season where we are not going to qualify for Europe then I think we should give young Sears a run-out. What have we got to lose and we may well find he has got the class to survive in the first team, We will never know until we give him a chance. There are plenty of other top premiership players who have made it young.
Submitted by Barking Mad Steve on 25 February, 2008 - 21:35.
It's the reserves, where Faubert's really quick, Deano gets goals and the Z-man scores hat-tricks. Not something you will see in the Prem. I do agree though, we should let him out and soon, if he could manage half his current rate he could help us get into Europe, That would be ironic if we played him when it was too late. At least it's something exciting to look forward to, we hope.

Calton cole might be full of effort no dought, but as for player of the season, no way mate,if he's our top man then i need to come out of retirement after 10 years and show how to stick it in the onion bag, he aint got the finish, you may aswell have a defender in the box, we are well missing bellamy, he's a proper goal scorer.

I totally agree, Anton has been brilliant this season and is fulfilling his potential.I am sure that it has helped having Neill and Upson alongside him. He must be in with a chance of Hammer of the year and a place in the England squad.

I know it's a bit early to start talking about Hammer of the Year, but since you brought the subject up Jeff.......! I agree Anton has had a good season and is beginning to look the real deal, but what about Carlton? In the first few games of the season he was desperate and the crowds were jeering and booing him and I have never seen anyone so low in confidence and yet he has turned it around and carries our forward line week in and week out. No one has put in more effort. If you had to pick one person who epitomises everything our team has been about this season then Cole would get my vote.

I just to say how impressed ive been with anton ferdinand this season he has been outstanding at center back with matty upson. anton and upson are alot like rio and vidic, upson being vidic and ferdinand being ferdinand i think they work really well together and without them we would defently not be where we are now, seeing as we can only score 1 goal a match.

yes but its not just that we didnt play well and won, if we continue to play as we have in the past few games and i am talking about us going forward then we are going to be no where near the status of everton, villa ,pompay, spuds. We still seem scared shitless to conceed, we allow one in and the team shuts down like its game over i dont know whats wrong. This season we have been shiit in the final third end of and now curbs comes out saying (ABOUT THE PLAYERS) no ones stopping them. Well something obviously is thay havnt just thought to em selves Fuk it lets just boot the ball high every couple of passes. When cole was the only fit striker then yes i agreed that is what we had to do, but there are enough fluent passes and runers in the team now to be able to keep the ball down. Maybe the problem is with cole upfront as soon as we come under pressure the opertunity of hitting it long is to overwhelming. But curbs statement of Nothing is stopping them is disgusting, you cant just say go out there and attack we need to be applying tactics, strategy etc upfront.

We missed relegation last season by the skin of our teeth. We have 40 points and are 10th in the table. We still have an outside chance of making Europe. We have suffered more long term injuries to key players than any other side. We had a mess of a dressing room and an image-conscious manager who seemed unable to control the bling boys in the club, or the contents of his underwear allegedly! We were consumed by controversy re the Argentinians. we were a fcuking state of a club! Curbishley has come in,helped us escape relegation against all odds, instilled a new professionalism in the players, and got us totally stable in the league without half a first eleven available at any stage. And STILL people on here purporting to be fans complain.FFS! No, our football hasn't been stunning.Yes, we have lacked flair. And taken in isolation, Curbs comment "nothing is stopping them" seems trite.Do you think by any remote possibilty that he might be getting a teensy weensy bit peed off with being constantly criticised by so-called fans? He has never once heard his name chanted by the fans, and now they've taken to chanting negatively at him. When we have won away from home and lie 9th in the table!Tony Gale for one, seems to think Curbs has done a half decent job. And I would suggest he knows more about fooball than most.I am beginning to despair that my club fans have become as fickle and ignorant as the Arse, Manure, Spuds, Chelski, Cockney Scousers. I really believed we were West Ham till we die. Dunno where that went. Sorry for yet another rant on here, but I am getting to be ashamed of our so-called support, and I never thought I'd say that.

It seems people here are so fukin drawn on last season that we arnt taking into account whats been going on this season, yes we have had injurys fair enough im not disagreeing nor disregarding that, but since the Man u game we have turned into without a doubt the most dull team in the league. 2 nill to arsenal, (the most boring cup game i can immagine came next) 0-0 with city, we scrape it past fulham 2-1 with a last second goal, city take us in the cup nxt round 1-0, then 1-1 in the league, a last second penalty to beat liverpool 1-0, and im not going to even go through the pass three games. its been so so long sinced i have sat down with a beer to watch us play a good game and think we did ourselves proud. And for all of my weeks of watching the same old boring shite and that is what it is shite, curbs sais 'the players are there, no one is stopping them'. obviously you are'nt fuking teaching nor emplying the correct tactics then. thats why i am pissed off.

I have a bit of a theory about getting over the line with a lot of 1-0, 2-1 results this year and it is something that should carry forward for future years also. When you look at the make-up of the team and Curbs acquisitions he’s attempted to buy reliability and leadership in a contest (injuries aside for just a minute), Neill (captain), Parker (Captain), Ljunberg (Captain), Upson (consummate professional). I think these players surrounded by a strong team mentality has been contributing to getting over the line in a lot of these games. These guys with Macca and Mullins have been the foundations, add some passion with Noble, flair with Solano and Faubert and the teams not that far away. My impression is that Curbs saw a weakness and went about addressing it, that is why 40 points are on the board, and that is why with a few acquisitions we will push higher next year.
