Just three hours to kickoff. So full of questions. Is Nev gonna let us know the rosters? Is Noble gonna be back in the starting lineup? Neill and Ljungberg? Is Sears going to get his first start? Are we capable of beating Rams? If we lose, is that it for Curbishley? Looking ahead, are we capable of beating Manchester United away? If that means Chelsea pip them at the post, do we really want to do that? Who said this season was boring, anyway? COME ON YOU IRONS! Score a few goals and get your confidence back. Close out this season in style and we'll see you in August with a smile!!!!!

Ironically I'll be in Leytonstone in the morning mowing my Nan's lawn but I'll have to leg it back to Colchester to watch the game online. It's so wrong. Nothing less than a thumping please. Two news items: Romford Fc are moving to Aveley Mill Field to replace Mauritius who are moving to Walthamstow. This frees Ford United sports ground to be purchased by West Ham. The second news is of a bondholders meeting on the 8th May where no guests of bondholders are to be addmitted. This has not happened since the very first meetings years ago. Is the club going to tell them something they will not want to hear?

Went Lakeside yesterday afternoon to get a photo singed by Tony Cottee featuring me and him from a previous meet. I asked what he thought about the situation at present, thought you might be interested to see how it links to your views. He thinks people who are against giving Curbs a longer chance are wrong, he should be given until his full fit first team can be judged, which i think most logical thinkers would agree with. He believes there are definatly some players that need to go, but would not name names. Although in his next sentence he used Luis Boa Morte as an example for something, so maybe he was fresh in his mind. Also hinted towards the overpaid players. This was the best one for me, he said if Curbishly wants fans respect, for the remaining games (and should have been the case when we seemed to be going nowhere earlier in the season) then the first four names he would have on the team sheet are Collison, Tomkins, Noble and Sears, and the rest of the team should be picked to compliment the young four. He said bleed the youngsters into the team, give them some full games. That way, if we lose 3-0 to Derby, fans will react in a way like "Well at least we saw some positive action, some fresh blood and passion". If we lose 3-0 to Derby and Curbs sends out players such as Ljumberg, LBM, Niell etc and we lose, well we have a problem don't we. If Curbs came out and said this is what he was going to do, then fans would turn up in full voice due to the fact we love to see the dedicated youngsters play. If they lost, well then they would still get a standing ovation off the pitch as they will clearly have worked hard. Personally i agree with all the above and what Cottee said.... Perhaps he should be offered a role at the club as he seems more connected to the club/fans than most we hear from.

further to my previous comment, i'm just thinking..why don't we play 3-4-3 against derby? green, anton(right cb),upson, neill(left cb),lyungberg(lm),noble, parker, solano(rm),ashton, zamora, sears. subs: walker, tomkins, collison, pantsil, cole. give george and hayden a rest. it's derby county for f### sake, let's take some risks and go right at them. i'd like to see parker and noble sandwiched between freddy and nobby on the flanks.it's surely worth a shot. otherwise we're in for another dire game at the boleyn where we'll probably scrape a 2-0 victory (both goals coming from set pieces).what do others think?
Submitted by jeffhammer on 17 April, 2008 - 21:58.
Okay lets start our own new comments then. Apparently its 6 to go before new signings come in so my 6 to go are: Quashie, Davenport,Bowyer,Boa Morte,Mullins and Gabbidon. New signings, a creative midfielder and another forward.

ye i agree mate.i would probably throw in spector to that group aswell. i know he's young but the man just makes me nervous.in an ideal world i would offload players such as zamora, cole, collins and matty ethers etc but realistically they can be useful squad players over the coming seasons (irrespective of how inconsistent they all are.) we must hold onto crucial players - green, upson, noble, parker, ashton although i have a suspicion that deano will move on in the summer.a fully fit team on paper looks bloody awesome when you think bout it: 3-4-3 green, neill(when on form),upson, anton(when focused),parker, noble, dyer, lyungberg, ashton, bellamy, sears

Submitted by hammer of OZ on 17 April, 2008 - 21:55.
Yeah i read out hear in Oz that they are talking Neill, Llungberg and Dyer . Knowing our luck some other team will get them at a bargain price for half the wages we are paying them and they will all end up having brilliant injury free seasons and be classed as the buys of the year. i think Curbs needs to decide what sort of right back he is looking for. If he want's overlapping wing backs then he shouldn't of bought Neill in the first place. I think we need to pick our favourite system to use and buy players that fit into thatsystem, not buy players then try and make them fit into the way we want to play. I am happy to give curbs more time, i just think we need to broaden our horizon's when it comes to recruitment, English football is know a Contintental competion and we need to go and really search all parts of the world for some quality, both established and up and coming. Hope all this makes sense, my mind works quicker than my fingers type.

Thanks IG! That's some of the most encouraging news I've heard out of West Ham in weeks. It's good to see that the Board ARE taking steps to improve the club. I think that's what we all want and hope to see. As for the title, "Curbishley Wields the Axe", I had to laugh. There have been so many of us (including me on worse days) hoping he'd GET the axe, not wield it! But if at least six players have to go, here's my list (in no particualr order): collins, quashie, davenport, boa morte, bowyer, spector. Of these I think spector is the most useful; a great utility player, but difficult when you have to use him all the time. Collins is next most useful, but with Tomka coming along, I think he's surplus. The others are simply not necessary, in my opinion. If we let these six players go, does anyone think we would really miss them? Three more who might be dispensible: etherington, pantsil, cole; but they could be useful for cover. Thinking about the plans for next season made me feel brighter about West Ham. Thanks, mate.

Cheers, IG. That link details Roehampton University as carrying out a well overdue analysis of our training, which is clearly one of many areas in need of a kick-up the hoop and to which I bemusedly add these questions: 1. When was the last review carried-out? 2. Who carried it out? 3. Have we asked for our money back? 4. Do 'we' consider Roehampton to have an acceptable pedigree to do this work for 'us'? 5. Why was, as I understand it, the nation's foremost sport university, Loughborough, not contracted? I've a nasty feeling that the answers are: 1. 1965 2. Mickey Mouse 3. Ha-ha 4. No ...they appear within the category of answer two and finally 5. Get the best? ...but this is West Ham! I'm sorry but 'Roehampton' doesn't convince me that the club is taking this seriously.
Submitted by Barking Mad Steve on 17 April, 2008 - 19:55.
According to the article I read, this is the same team that was used by Chelsea, among other clubs, so they do have some Pedigree and experience. As a business, our club is being run by a successful Billionaire so I, for one will have a little faith that he has some idea of what he's doing and wait for the outcome before I criticise.

Loughbrough should be re-named the 'Univertsity of Willy Wavers' because all they are interested in is sporting performance from their students - no matter how thick they are. It has a good reputation cos' they cherry pick all the good young athletes/footballers etc and balls to the academic side. I dunno about Roehampton and Im sure Loughbrough has some good qualities but we'll have to trust the board on this one I guess.

Cheers Barking & Denbigh ...the ol' sceptic in me slipped-out unsupervised when I was making a brew. Anton's ham-string going the other day got me thinking 'basics, Curb's ...BASICS' when it went after 87 seconds. I'm no magic-sponge bloke but it surely smelled of (as the press all rattled-on) an inadequate warm-up ...as if he'd just come from his Gran's.

It seems KUMB might have that wrong too. He could be back for the Man U game. I thought the same thing when he went down but, it didn't make sense, you usually have to sprint to tear a hamstring and Anton had not run at any speed by the time he went down. Apparently it is something to do with a nerve in his back that caused the hamstring to tighten up.

Its only in recent weeks I have been able to watch West Ham regularly in Australia having signed up with Foxtel. I saw the Everton Game which was fantastic. Since then it has been steadily downhill. Sunderland should have won by very much more than what they did. I missed Pompey but against Bolton they only sprung to life after going a goal down. The ball ended up in the back of the net three times so they were fortunate that two of those were offside. It was clear to me that when Sears comes on West Ham are a different team. He runs at defenders and unsettles them .. and here I think is the problem. West Ham have no width .. No wingers and their full backs offer no overlap. I have heard so many good things about McCartney but from what I see ... for all his workrate he lacks skill, cant pass and is often caught with the ball. Deano is a class above .. he unfortunately has no one to play off up front, no width and is pretty much a loan hand. Boa Morte against Bolton was far from the worst ... But he was crap at Everton. We need width and we need players who can run with the ball .. Parker runs round in circles literally, None of our midfielders have a penetrating pass either .. Put simply we are very ordinary. Whether its Curbs fault or not I do not know but we need a clear out and we need some flair to add to the grinders ... Maybe curbs has done his job and settled the ship .. as a grinder perhaps he is one too many as well. Time will tell.
Submitted by asheshammer on 17 April, 2008 - 11:34.
Spot on, mate. Especially: right about Sears, Right about Ashton, right about Parker (but I think there's more and better to come from him), Right about Boa Morte but he had a chance against Bolton in a crucial moment and made a hash of it. But you've summed it all up very well, and it explains why I feel so deflated after a good first half of the season -- it was looking promising in January. Oh well, let's see what happens over the summer.

It appears that one or two of you felt aggrieved by my recent post, for that I apologise. It was by no means meant in the way that some of you have taken it. It was simply a tongue in cheek remark aimed at those who have chosen to use this site as a means of correcting each other’s grammar and use of punctuation! In an attempt to set the record straight and now that the current footbal season is drawing to a close, I would ask you to cast your minds forward to this summer’s Olympic Games. As I have mentioned I live in Beijing and I have a spare room in my apartment. If anyone back home is planning a trip this way you would be more than welcome. I could accommodate a couple of people, for a small consideration. Hotels are pretty much fully booked already and any with vacancies are astronomically over priced and of low to poor quality. I live within easy access of the ‘Birds Nest’ Stadium and the ‘Water Cube’ (Olympic swimming pool), in fact my office is only 300 metres from both so I am familiar with the route. I am also quite close to the venue for the ladies beach volleyball tournament!!! Anyone interested just drop me a line via this site or mike.appyammer@gmail.com

I honestly can not believe people are still backing Curbishly i really just can't understand it. Some of the excuses (I guess you can call them), are getting ridiculous. Some people are basically saying, we have never been a big team and wont so just forget it West Ham fans and be happy with curbs. Shouldn't we want our team to be as successful as possible? Some say there is no one to replace Curbs well i think that is bollockks. When a team get rid of a manager they take time to look and find interest. Managers don't just say while managing there current teams, if a prem team come looking ill take it. They don't advertise their availability. Some people here have to look past the league position this season and say well have we really improved that much because i don't think we look that much better than the team from last year. The footballs shiit, the results are crap crappy klint on the whole, i mean who here can look through this seasons results and say we have done well - scraping past champion ship opposition, loosing against relegation teams, and being beat by all of the half descent teams in the prem with out half a fight. When you also look that this season has come after we have spent a good 40 million on players, no one can argue that because we have. The players we did lose we all knew would go anyway apart from Benayoun, so what has the money been spent on. If anyone here thinks that next season we can get Ljunberg, parker and dyer all playing together putting together a consistent run in the league then you must be idiots. next season we will still be playing with the likes of Mullins in midfield and cole and zamora up front. We have to get a manager with some spark about him, someone who's got some fresh ideas to bring in and is going to use the money to better our team not bring in a list of the same old premier league dead beats. I would have no problem what so ever with giving a manager who we can be sure knows what he is doing and looks like he fits the bill time............................... call me pessimistic a curbs basher what ever you want but right now time and money is being wasted while that old fart is in charge. I have never moaned like this in all my years as a west ham except with Roader. We are going no further than charlton did at this rate and any money next season if Curbs stays we will be where we are now. Even if we loose to Derby next saturday the same fans will be here going on about at least we are not in the relegation places and look at the injurys. Fuk the injurys they are no excuse for the football i have had to put up with this season and no way are they just bad luck, no way.

Whether people agree with you or not JJ. It's always good to see to see passion and you have plenty of that. You say you "can't understand" why people support Curbs. It's simple really, different people see things in different ways. I agree we could sack Curbs and get in a 'better' manager but, there is always a risk when you make that kind of decision. Because of our league position, it's possible that BG feels it is not wise to take any risks at this stage. No the football isn't pretty, no most of us do not understand some of the selections and tactics employed by Curbs but that does not mean things can not and will not change. I personally look at what Curbs did at Charlton and see it as an achievement that most managers could not have managed. Football at the top level is constantly changing so to achieve the same thing in this environment for more than ten consecutive seasons shows an ability to adapt to and keep up with the modern game. If I thought Curbs will manage us in the same style and fashion next season I would be more reluctant to support him. You sometimes have to have either, hope or belief or both. My belief is that, given time, Curbishly will adapt his style of management to suit both, West Ham, and it's supporters. We have already seen a change in his tactics towards the end of this season. We have played with three strikers up front recently, which is something many on here thought we would NEVER see with Curbs in charge. It worked against Blackburn, unfortunately, it hasn't worked the last couple of times . The point is he HAS played that way and he has shown willing to change his style of play. We have also started with 4-4-2 a bit more in the last month or two. It takes time, patience and practice to improve at most things and, at the top level, it takes a bit more. Another argument against Curbs is his inexperience in the transfer market. The fact that Nani has been brought in should give us some confidence that the next wave of signings (and there will be some in the summer), will be better than those that Curbs brought in. I am not happy with the football we are playing, I am not happy with the results we have had but, I do believe that experience is a big advantage in this game and not many managers have the Premiership experience that Curbs has. I hope and believe he will learn and improve with the challenge he has here at UP. I am not willing to sit and watch another season of drab uneventful and uninspired football, which we have seen but, as a club that has a proud tradition of sticking with our managers, I am hoping we do the same again with Curbs and get to reap the rewards as Everton are now doing with Moyes. If next season starts in the same fashion that this one has gone over the last two months or more, then we will be in a position where the club is in danger of going backwards, then, keeping Curbs would be a higher risk than sacking him. I'm sure, as we saw with Pardew, Curbs will be on his way without any hesitation. Yes, I am backing the manager but it isn't written in stone. If things do not improve, if the potential that we saw before the backbone of the team was written off doesn't show at the beginning of next season, I will be joining everyone else asking for a replacement.
