Players Back For Old Trafford ShowdownSubmitted by Neville Nixon on 30 April, 2008 - 10:30.
Perhaps it is the lure of playing against the champions elect Manchester United at Old Trafford in this Saturday's live on sky crunch match that has had a galvanising effect on several of West Ham's walking wounded...
Mathew Etherington has emerged from the 'Groin Zone' to make himself available, while Mark Noble, Bobby Zamora and George McCartney have all shaken off knocks ahead of what promises to be an exciting match..
Of course this time last year Hammers went to Old Trafford and succeeded in securing the mission impossible of Premiership survival, this time round things are things are a little different. Manchester Utd have to win in order to secure the title of champions, whereas last year things were already done and dusted..
On the face of it everything is geared towards a Man U victory, but as we all know West Ham have been a thorn in the side for Sir Alex for many a year...
For most Hammers fans the realistic hope is that Alan Curbishley can motivate his team to go out and "give it a go" mindful of the fact that holding on to tenth spot ahead of Tottenham is massively important to the fans as well as being the cut off point for the various financial bonuses on offer to both manager and players alike. Some would say that they don't deserve to receive a bonus, but those people are living in the twilight zone. Alan Curbishley's brief was to secure survival, which he did, and then to steady the ship with a top half finish, which he just about has, and then to push for a European spot, which is entirely possible so long as the team do not sustain the same amount of crippling injuries that they have this season..
Last weekend's game against Newcastle may not have been the result that was wanted nor indeed expected (after 40 minutes that is) but the style and effort won over many fans who had become bored with Hammers 'one dimensional' play of late. The fact that injuries have dictated this style seems to have eluded them! - Ed

Now wouldn't that just be
Now wouldn't that just be like history repeating itself, if our best striker were to score in his last game for us at Old Trafford before they blatantly TAP HIM UP and sign him! Hope these Deano rumours aren't true. Then again if he wants to warm their bench . . . . . COYIfYouWantToGoThenTheresTheDoorIrons . . . .

Had a funny one on the golf course today. Saw an Aussie manc, tee shirt said it all, and asked how he was preparing to lose the league through the Hammers again. 'Yer Dreamin' he said. 'When was the last time you beat us in the league' I replied. As per most manure 'supporters' he didn't have a Danny La Rue. 'We will make it four in a row, home and away, how does that fit after the run in to the last few games your lot have had. Lucky against the Spanish but not the Cockney Boys'........... Clueless, and I love it. All we need is 5,000 away vocalists and several hundred thousand 'around the globe' vocalists and they will go running scared. If Curbs sprays his magic dust around the changing room we will spoil it again for them. Unlike last year I am not touching the whisky. Strictly Corona only. Other half said the neighbours think I'm nuts cos of the last game of the season at 3.00am Monday morning running round singing Bubbles etc. As for Deano, if he wants out then let him go. I think we've all been preparing for it anyway. Shame, as he looks like he's coming good. If he does go; 'break a leg' as they say in theatre land. COYgiveittothenorthernmonkeysIrons.
I dont agree with this attitude of ''if Deano wants to go let him go''. The guy is our clasiest player and we will need him if we want to get europe next season. We need to tie him down to a long contract in the summer not sell him for 10 mil. what can we get with 10 million pounds anyway? a couple more boa morte's I suppose
What if he doesn't want to stay and plays 'sulky' football next year. I for one won't be happy HIH, though I do agree he is gonna be worth sackfuls of cash in coming years. We desperately need to make Europe next year to make it worth his while staying. I'm hoping he plays a blinder today at OT but worried Fergie might see it as a great chance to check out his next 'buy'. COYI.
Aus, I reckon DA is too sporadic for Sir Ferg: My eye is on that Thai hot-head at the blue mancs 'wanting' & getting him for £10m, in which case we'll then need anyone who can hit a cow's arse with a banjo to partner the Z winger (ie, Bobby Zee) and young fred up front. Assuming too that CC might drift off to Derby ...or somewhere.
I think it could just be Fergy playing mind games and trying to undermine the team!!!.
Not being a pessimist just a realist,we will get mullered tomorrow.Three reasons 1)MAN UTD have got everything to play for to win the premiership a far bigger incentive then us holding onto 10th place 2)We will have half our reserves in our starting line-up,who are just not up to the grade.3)The MAN UTD fans will be in full voice for this one, will be like a 12th man for them.
wonder what odds u wud hav got on christian dailly pickin up a uefa cup medal this season??? i for one wud like to congratulate the guy. a loyal servant. a guy that played his part in taking us back to where we belong. a fact that many tend to forget! good luck christian!! ps: im with the previous post..my gut says wer gona get sumtn tomo and deanos gona score. im not liking these rumours bout deano goin to man utd by the way! hurry curbs sign him up 4gud!
I'm a man thats always backed an outsider, last year against all odds I had a tenner on West Ham to win one nil and tevez to score first goal, quids in, and again I think its going to be another upset for the mancs! Not only because we always seem to turn up the pace against the mancs but the team looked like a team with something to play for on Saturday and we were attacking well. they are going into this game on a high and are going to want all three points and I can see us taking the three. All I want now is Newcastle to beat Chelsea as well and the bet I put on yesterday for Arsenal to win the league may come up trumps. COYI
Jesus phil your not asking for much really are you !!! Better chance of sticking a tenner on the euromillions tonight...and if u win will u buy us back tevez ?
LBM as a ball boy ? Jesus the game would never re start ..by the time it takes him to get the ball under control !!!! Sneaky point tomorrow...ashton to get the equaliser ?
Judge Curbishley next season when hopefully we'll have a near fit squad, with Ashton and Bellamy upfront and Faubert, Noble, Parker and Dyer in midfield, at the back Neill, Upson, Ferdinand, McCartney. Players to go Ljungberg, Bowyer, Quashie, Davenport, Zamora, Cole, Etherington, Spector, Wright, Boa Morte plus more.
Dyer and Parker will not be playing majoraty of the season, next season , we have to strengthen if we are to improve.
Johnny...lets hope we hold on to the main boys like deano/green/upson/noble and build the team around them...would hold onto bobby/matty as cover and think freddie wud still do a job but if he is screwing us financially then hes gotta go along with neill...get some decent players in along with ure named eleven above that will give proper competition for places and we can have a go...What we need is decent players to replace the same type if injuries/suspensions arrive as this year a lot of the boys that played are only championship quality ..spector/cole/bowyer/mullins/matty and maybe bobby all fall into this category..If we want to push on as a club and enter the european race we realistically need to improve the standard of player at our club otherwise im afraid it will be mid table medicority..Hope BG realises this and gives curbs a few bob to spend wisely this time and take us to the next level..if we get rid of the fizzy pop players it may not hit us too hard financially so heres
dreaming to a draw tomorrow followed by 3 against the villa...COYI FOREVER
AT LAST SOME SENSE! Nev, me and a few others needed you on here ages ago to back us up mate. How people can discount SO MANY injuries, and say you can't use it as an excuse is just crazy. Personally, im still on the fence about Curbs, and i'll wait until i've seen him play a full season with a near-fit squad before passing judgement. However, I think with all the problems we've has this year, ending up in the top-half would be a monumentous achievement, and I think would bode very well for Curb's future. I just look at the team in 9th. Errikson is loved by the Citeh fans, and they all think it's an outrage he's being sacked - and they're 1 place ahead of us!! Let's start playing OUR part, and really get behind everything West Ham, cos the fans can make a massive difference to the points tally come the end of the season. COYI
if we just look at the league position in such a vague way that so many people here are - then yes it does look like City are doing little better than us. But looking at the players they have, and the promise they are showing. Their squad is incredibly stronger than us and we cant complain and argue against that. AT the end of the day Erikson has built a stronger squad than Curbishly has and has put together a team mush more admired by others than ours. Any neutral fan will state City are a better team than us because of Eriksson and we can not argue with that they are miles ahead of us.
and what difference does the net amount make. End of day both of them spent 50 mill roughly each and Erikson has done better. Look I'm not being anti curbs when i am arguing on behalf of City but it really pisses me off when i have to listen to biased fans slag off other teams - as I hate it when hearing others do the same to West Ham. A bit of respect really doesn't go a miss.
We spent £27 million and recouped £22 million by selling one of our best in Yossi and a very good midfielder with a bad attitude in Reo Coker.
If Curbs had spent £50 million, I would have expected a lot better than top ten,as it is,we have had a successful season all factors considered.
If we had anything like a near fit side and not the walking wounded parade we would be ahead of Blackburn and City easy. Can't wait for Man U game the chance to the double over em again should be motivation enough for the players.
i think its way time that curbs got some praise for he s efforts since becoming manager, even though i liked pards we was only going one way...down!now a year later and with so many injuries we sit mid table,ok the style of play at times was nt pretty but its a points business were in,and with better luck on the injury front next season i think we ll see the real curbs.onwards and upwards!p.s.just a thought but can we lay off lampard it only makes him play better, remember the reception tevez got? and he had a poor game against us
Yeah, great post Nev. Just thought I'd let you know that it was your posts as editor that first got me reading this site; so hang in there, you've done a great job. On the old traff showdown, -- we can only hope, eh? I think United will be out to prove a point and not just to us. They want to win the double and they can do it, too. At this point in the season, when we don't have any hope of Europe, I have to prefer United for BOTH the EPL title and the CL trophy. I'd hate to see Chelsea win it. That said, wouldn't it be nice to beat United AND Villa and end the season on a high (and ahead of Totts and Toon!). If we get one more point, then Newcastle can't overtake us (goal difference is too great). We need two more points to guarantee a top ten finish. Time to do the business!!! COYI!
Thankyou for a well written post Neville. I hope this is a sign that things are improving for you. Many users have noticed the drop in content from your threads, but this latest post is more like the sort of thread we had previously got used and enjoyed reading as well as discussing or debating. Is it possible to get another poll going too? They have always been fun to get involved with and give us an insight into what other fans are thinking or feeling. It could encourage a few new visitors, or old ones for that matter.
A striker aswel who can grab us some goals. Id like to see us moove for Emana from France, herd a lot about him - all good.
Just wondering peoples toughts on who we should be looking to bring in over the summer (try to be realitic lads..no eto's or david villas)...Would like shorey as competition to macca..new right full(???)....mears back maybe ?...creative midfielder ?? and an outside right...any ideas lads ?
If we can strenghten the squad and get the injured boys back we may surprise a few people next year....Have to hold onto deano/greeno/upson/noble though..vital also for progress....bored today in work lads so need to pass the day !!!! COYI
Right chaps, I've just listened to the Curbishley interview as posted below and I have to say that that has galvanised my support of the chap. (I'm wearing my rotten tomato and egg-proof suit, so fire away)! He's not playing fantasy football manager or pro evo or whatever game the Curbs bashers seem to think is being played in the Premiership. He happens to be playing Realworld Football Manager 2007/8. This game was not developed by CAPCOM, EIDOS, EA Sports (it's in the game), Konami, Ubisoft, Microsoft (or Staysoft for that matter) and is not available for PS 1,2 or 3, Gamecube, XBox, XBox 360, PC, PSP, Nintendo DS, wii or whatever else we can spend our money on that whisks us away from the job at hand that comes under the heading of 'everyday life'! The advantages of this game are spectacularly life-like graphics and a breathtaking musical score (bubbles). This game was developed by the F.A. and was about 100 years in the making. He's also playing it on a difficulty level of "European Berserk+ no prisoners", which incidentally is light years away from "Easy", "Normal", "Professional" or "Genius". Btw there are no cheat codes available from any internet sites, and he can't just switch the console off and start again when we fall out of top spot! He's our manager and considering the circumstances, he's done a great job. For those of you who wanna talk about the quality of footy that's been played this year, well maybe it's been a case of needs must when the devil shits in yer 'andbag! We've all had to endure it and a lot of it ain't been pretty, but we're 10th and without once having put our first team out. Yeah yeah 'no need for the injuries' blah blah, 'LBM' blah blah, 'disappointing season' blah blah, 'typical Curbs end of season nose-dive' blah blah. I haven't been posting, but I have been reading the site and watching how some of me 'mates' are getting on, and I have to say that I have been quite startled at the lack of posts (positive or otherwise) despite the fact that we showed some very positive signs of a return to the West Ham way. Why aren't we getting or staying behind the team, or at least thinking outside of the box and seeing the big picture. Let's get up for the next game and really concentrate on pissing on Fergies chips as we so often have done. How sweet would 12 out of 12 be come 2:30pm Saturday. Plus to beat the Manx when they needed to win would certainly shut up all those who see our victory at Old Trafford last season as nothing more than a 'donation' by ManUre. Let's prove to the world that we stayed up on merit last year and that we aren't some sort of charity case. Criticism, debate and passion. Great. But we are all WestHam here aren't we? Great to see the 2006 cup final cheats completely shat on by Chelscum! OLAS
Great post, that puts things into perspective. At the end of the day i know we are all shooting our mouths off but we or most realise Curbishley has done well with all things considered. But our comments were said more in frustration off what should have been rather than disappointment off what has been.
Love that post, IG. You're so right to remind us of the difference between fantasy football and the real world. United only scored one goal in two matches against Barca -- should fans be complaining of boring football and asking for Sir Alex's head on a platter? Of course not. I have to say I faltered in support of Curbs as the season went on. I was dissatisfied with the play after January and the three big losses and on and on. But what a difference that last match has made to me. I could really see that, given the chance, Curbs will set out his stall and play attacking football. And it was so good to watch. So let's see what next season has in store. COYI!!!
Sniff.... it's just like old times... welcome back IG..... ! That interview should shut up all the detractors. Although some folks here are mighty stubborn....
Great post IG. Good to see you here still. Recently we have seen a drop in the number of posts with quality and passion, you have delivered on both counts as usual. Cheers.
i must admit that when i read the title "players back for old trafford showdown" i had a sneaky feeling bellamy and dyer might just suprise us all with a quick return!the fact that noble, mac and zamora were even injured in the first place brought a smile. anywho, all's good.i'm looking forward to saturday's game. there's no doubting that our support will be top trumps as ever! i can see us playin well. however i'm pretty sure curbs will play 4-5-1..green pantsil neill tomkins mccartney faubert noble parker mullins boa morte and ashton. subs: walker,spector,etherington,cole,sears.. deanos on fire at the mo,nobles playin well and lets face it,boa morte gave his all last week and wasnt too bad. either way, i cant see S***s catchin us. villa will be worried comin to the boleyn on the last day...2 good games to finish what was an average season ( exactly what the doctor ordered after last season's ordeal )..futures bright futures claret and blue.
Apparently Matty Upson and Jonathan Spector are also available for Saturdays match.
My team: Green Neill Tompkins Upson McCartney Faubert Noble Parker Etherington Ashton Zamora
subs: Spector, Cole, Mullins Walker and SEars
Just a quickie regarding the back four, what about having Paintsil RB, Neill CB with Upson CB (what a storming partnership that could turn out to be) with Linda keeping Irish eyes a smilin' in the LB berth. Tommo, as much as he oozes potential should start on the bench for this one with Spector as utility man. That's not taking anything away from the young 'un, but this may be a size too big for the lad at this stage in his career and we owe it to our younger lads to protect them from the media should it go Pete Tong on Sat. Waddya fink?? COYThoughtfulAndJollyCaringIrons
I am of the ilk that the young guns should be out there on Saturday Old Trafford or not. The likes of Tomka and Sears will have to play there at some stage and why not now. The boys will have to sweat blood and fury to get the desired result and this is where they can shine. If they stuff up, so be it. At least they won't be blinded next season when we are playing for a European spot in the table and not just securing 10th place bonuses......... My team: Greenie, Neill or Pantsil, Upson, Tomka, George, Noble, Parker, Faubert or Nobby, Deano, Zamora, Sears..........the bench can be made up from whoever else is fit. Take it to them and not them bringing it to us. Nail Ronaldo and Rooney early on with clear, clean and concise tackles that will not be misconstrued as bookable offences as we need 11 dudes on the park. Be lovely to see Ronaldo sent off for play acting. I hate that part of his game. Ask his mate Rooney what it feels like to be sent off because of his ways. Over to you lads. COYoptimisticIrons........... 3 - 1 to the Cockney boys
Aus, I agree 100% with your gameplan as as there isn't much caution left to be thrown to the wind when your opponents are a title chasing ManUre at old Trafford. Sears I think IS a must for the game, but NOT Tommo and this is nothing to do with ability whatsoever. For me it's about confidence building and protecting the inner self belief that is so important for a professional sportsman. In Freddie's case he scores at the Manx - maybe even the winner - he's the next Rooney and it's off to the World Cup with Sears spearheading the English attack blah blah blah British Press hype. But the end of the story is that he WILL be loved for it. No goal = no problem as "Ferdinand and Vidic were too strong for the feisty 18 year old". But none the less well done Freddie. Win, win situation. Tommo on the other hand COULD stand to play a blinder, maybe even a goal line save that denies "ol' red nose" another title. He could also leak the only goal of the game perhaps, and this is what I'd want to save him from. He's in a different position to Freddie. If he makes a mistake it could cost us a Goal. If Fred does it means a goal missed. Defenders are always in the undesirable position that they will always be vilified for their mistakes whereas strikers can to all intents get away with murder. So now it's time to get those C&B goggles on and say . . . . . . 0-1 to the Cockney Boys, Parker from 20 yards. Bangerang!
Ah come on jeff..no johnny pantsil...the legend from ghana !!!! rather him at right full than lucas " scissorhands" neill ....otherwise i like ure thinking....COYI
Come on Clare be serious, Johnny Pantsil cannot defend.
He is entertaining going forward but going backwards I would take Lucas every time.
I think the only chance we have of getting anything out of this game is to play like we did at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the season. Every 50/50 ball we won and whenever one of their midfield players received a pass two West Ham boys came clattering in. Although Man Utd need to win, psychologically a number of them will already be in Moscow and they won't want to pick up an injury so the hard but fair approach may yield something. Failing that another 4-0 drubbing could be on the cards. I don't care if we lose, just make us proud of you boys and play the match as if it was your last!
RH I dont think there players will be in Moscow at all as they have one hand on the title and wont want to let it go.....Agree with u that we will have to close them down fast or be prepared for a drubbing...If curbs uses faubert/matty as wide men though ud never know...decent suupply for deano and we may sneak something...dreaming in a deano wonderland !!!!!
Your heart is in the right place RH.....Lets hope our eleven saturday morning have the heart for a battle...maybe we shud start a fight with the groundsmen/security b4 the match just to let them know we are up for it !!!!!!
MATTY'S BACK, MATTY'S BACK! =D
Good post Nev, after the Newcastle match Curbishly said that there will be a lot of players in the team that have never played at old trafford getting a start. I think this means that we will see the young guns and a few squad players stepping up to the table. Which is only going to put a good spirit in the team, this team is going to want to win, going to want to score goals and going to want to prove them selves to the manager and the fans. Whether or not the have the ability to play at Old Trafford is something we will see Saturday afternoon, but I think we can expect a very first paced game from teams and very attacking, win lose or draw at old trafford if you see 11 men on that pitch putting everything they have into playing then they deserve all the applause at full time. COYI
Sorry to be pessimistic but I cannot see us getting anything out of the game on Saturday...last year at old trafford we were lucky...united had a lot of chances and failed to convert any...we got a few and thank god tevez scored....Would like to see a spirited performance and hope we will
try and pass it around as its a fantastic pitch to play ball on....hope im wrong but time will tell...Win v villa would more then make up for it !!COYI
