McCarthy for Ashton?

Submitted by hammerhead on 2 May, 2008 - 11:04.
I've heard persistent rumours from people in the know that Ashton will be leaving in the summer, with Benni McCarthy being brought in as his replacement.Does anyone else think that if Deano does leave, then McCarthy would be a great replacement?

Dean Ashton has the potential to score at the same rate as the likes of Torres, and Adebayor etc. Whether or not he does is up to him but, we would be crazy to get rid of our top scorer. He is probably one of our best assets with regards his potential increase in value too. If Ashton maintains his fitness, next season he could be a menace FOR us, especially if he has Bellamy and Sears to play off.

McCarthy for Ashton is a step backwards, we would lose a potential 20 plus goalscorer. McCarthey would be another squad player at best and we have more than enough of them. If Ashton wants to go, then he has to go, but buggering hell we will need an replacement not an excuse for one!!!

if we sell dean ashton, we will be the same mid-table team forever. we get good players make them good and then sell them on to bigger clubs. Ashtons physical presence is great and probably the best in th premiership. Apparently man u are lining up an 8 million pound move. 8 million pound is nothing if we are going to sell him we need to sell him for about 25 million because thats how good he is west ham baby all day long

McCarthy has done bugger all this season, Hughes prefers Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts to him. Selling Ashton is a terrible move, he is quality and we can't be seen to sell players like this if we are going to progress. Its a key decision if we let him go and will show the wider football world that this leaopard hasn't changed its spots after all.

If we sell Ashton, I will be disappointed for a number of reasons.
Firstly, an in-form Ashton will always guarantee us goals and assists.
Secondly, if we are going to carry on selling our potential greats then, nothing is going to change and we will maintain the yo-yo status that we have witnessed for a number of years. If fit, Ashton already has the quality to get between 15 & 20 goals a season, and that's not taking into account the potential he has to improve.
Thirdly, I have a lot of respect for and belief in, BG genuinely wanting to take this club forward. If we sell players like Ashton, I would start to question BG's real intent and 5 year business plan, especially if Deano was replaced by McCarthy, I don't see that as progress. We would have to buy someone like Crouch, Farfan, or Huntelaar for us to improve on Ashton and even then, it's still a risk.
Finally, I'm not sure about Fergie's intent with regards Ashton. It seems that every time we play them at the back end of the season, Man U seem to be interested in our top player/s. Is he just trying to distract or undermine our squad before the game? It's no secret that Fergie uses psychology in his tactics.
I am hoping this game is at least equal to the anticipation I have felt for it, I have been looking forward to this game probably more than any other this season. As long as we put in the whole 90 plus minutes and can say "We played well", we will give ourselves a chance. I can't help thinking that Sears and Tomkins could be in for a start at Old Trafford, maybe even Collison too, thanks to Curbs and Fergy being mates. Safe travels to everyone who is going today. Do us proud.
Good luck today you

You're certainly Barking Mad, Steve if you think Crouch would be an improvement on Ashton!!! Ease up on the drinking and all will become clearer!!

We may not like the lad but it has to be said that Crouch is an improvement over our complete strike force... He does get the goals. Hopefully Ashton will have a good season next year but he needs better support up front and from the midfield.

I have to disagree. Crouch is the most over-hyped forward since Heskey. Both have only had England careers because of playing for Liverpool. Crouch can't head the ball to save his life, gets tied up by his own long legs and 9 times out of ten shoots wide or high. Ashton can head the ball, has great feet, is younger and has a better eye for goal. It's the quality behind the player that let's Deano down whereas Crouch has world class midfielders setting him up week in week out and he still misses!!! Crouch better than Ashton, don't make me laugh........

Wouldn't want to lose ashton but if we did i agree santa cruz would be better replacement than mcarthy.

If Ashton leaves i will be gutted. He is young and without doubt going to be Englands first choice striker soon.We need to be building around him not selling him.As for McCarthy as a replacement forget it.When we originally went for him yes,but now no.He is getting on a bit.By all means buy him to play alongside Ashton,Bellamy and Sears but not as a replacement.I suppose if Man Utd come calling it would be hard for Ashton to reject a move but with a good pre-season and gaining full fitness Deano will be awesome. If he is sold, how much will we get?Remeber,Norwich have claims on a hefty sell on fee!

I would trade Ashton for McCarthy any day. Ashton is a good player and everything, but McCarthy is so much better. His pace is just frightening and he loves to take players on. Although, i do believe Ashton would be good with Bellamy upfront because Bellamy needs someone to knock it down for him, and i dont believe that McCarthy could fit that position.

I would be gutted if we were to lose Ashton, & a bit irate seeing as we`ve stood by him for nearly a season & half paying his wages whilst he`s been recovering from his various injuries. Deano gets top grade accolade from us fans, we sing his name @ the top of our voices, even when he plays shiit!!! COYWeLoveYouDeanoEvenWhenWeAreFrustratedWithYouIrons

Firstly ,there is no way MAN UTD need another forward .TEVEZ,RONALDO,ROONEY,SAHA are ample ,plus the fact they are all better than ASHTON based on this season's performances.McCARTHY has different strengths compared to ASHTON.Whereas ASHTON is good in the air, and good in linking up play ,bringing players into the game,McCARTHY has more pace, maybe better suited to CURB'S counter-attacking style of play. But I would be happy with either.

Saha is ALWAYS injured, I wouldn't be surprised if he does leave Manure in the summer 'cos he just doesn't contribute to them. I personally want him to stay, but guess we'll have to see...

Mccarthy has just signed a new contract but 2 be fair contracts are often used as a tool 2 ensure that the club gets the money they want for the player.Personally i wouldnt want B Mccarthy as he isnt as good as he was and he is getting on ,id rather we keep Ashton who is a young player and will only get better, but i think that Ashton wants out.Id offer top wack money 2 ensure that Deano stays.CJ

Apprantly Utd are taking a keen interest in Ashton. To let this man go would be a serious mistake and if we did it would have to be for top top dollar. We arent a selling club anymore so why should we not claim top money for our "best" player. If he were to go, we need a genuine quality replacement, McCarthy would provide no re-sell value, hes getting on to despite being a good stirker. Shurely there must be some young talent in the Dutch league (Huntelaar - I wish) that would sacrifice Champions Legue football in order to come to the Premiership.

Has'nt benni just signed a new contract within the last couple of weeks?
Submitted by hammerhead on 2 May, 2008 - 11:21.
I don't think he actually signed it,did he?Apparently he's unhappy about being down the pecking order at Blackburn, and might fancy a change. If we could get him for about 5 million it would be a good deal.
