Lucas Neill - end of term report.Submitted by Denbighammer on 12 May, 2008 - 19:44.
What do we think of our captain, Mr Lucash Meal (paid too much ,eats too much)? Personally, I think he's been a bit of a disaster this year and has looked a pale shadow of his former self. He looks totally unfit and makes some moronic decisions for a player of his experience. How many penalties has he nearly given away this season? He has what doctors call 'Christiandaillyitis' whereby he puts his hands all over his opponent when marking him. How many goals have we conceded as a direct result of Neill out of position? (Fanno will say - hes counted em!). Not enough bang for our buck for me. He gets a 'D'. Come on teachers - grade the pupil!

A 'D' Den thats a bit
A 'D' Den thats a bit generous isn't it? I think he's had a shocker of a season, he was the player who most impressed me in the run in last year and he has simply gone backwards in every game ive seen him. His positional play is appaling, as you say above how many goals have we conceded as a result of him going walkies, my opinion is the rear guard let in so few goals at the start of the season due to Upson being in there and taking command, i think neill has only been picked due to him a) being the captain and b) being one of curbishleys buys. He soon dropped mullins from the team when he wasn't performing, he's dropped deano often enough yet how many times have the likes of Neill and Boa morte been dropped..hardly any? If anythng to me he looked a better player the last few weeks at centre half as he cant go wandering around the field but he's too slow and not not athletic enough to be a full time cntre half. Personally i believe he's the weak link in our defence and if i was curbs i would sell or at least drop him and bring in a better right back. The motivation and encouragement he once showed as captain seems to have disappeared and he's more interested in arguing with the opposition and refs than playing football.

i do believe Neill signed not for money, but he was amazed by "the chairman's ambition" and was staggered by his "shopping list".
if i was Neill, id feel abit robbed. We did some some decent players (Bellamy, Faubert and Dyer) and without mentioning their injuries, they're not exactly the names that would stagger someone...in fact sort of players Lucas was with at Blackburn! But we'll see, i aint gona complain and im willing to give him another chance, get fit and sharpen up or he's ouuuuuuuttaaaa there.
Dream on! So he was staggered by our ambition was he? Erm, didn't he have the chance to join Liverpool and wasn't their ambition to win the Premiership and the Champions League THIS season? Wasn't ours to break into the top 4 within 5 years? So, how was our ambition better than Liverpool's exactly? He joined for the dosh.
He can pass with both feet which is rare amongst WHU players at present. He brings a lot of high level experience and composure to the team. I feel he needs a good rest and a chance to recharge, which he will get in the off season. remember he played a full season with Blackburn, the World Cup, transferred to West Ham, was injured and under pressure, helped hold the defence together to save us from relegation, played in the Asian Championships and then the full season again. He will have some World Cup qualifiers over summer but will get a rest during that time. For me he has the ability and will show it in 08/9.
He is now too old and slow to play at right back. He used to be an athlete and could read the game well, so right back was ok for him. I think he now needs to be moved into the middle, whereby i would rather have him than Anton, but then we would need a pacy CB next to him. I actually think him and Tompkins could be a fantastic pairing, epsecially as Tmpkins will now be able to relfect and learn from his mistakes over the summer. Depending on the team we play, i would have either Neill and Tompkins or Neill and Upson. But still think he leads a very tight line. Look at the start of the season when we were conceding very few goals !!! I would cash in on Anton as i don;t think he has improved in the last 3 years, whereby you would expect a hungry youngster to really push the boat out. If we don't now, we will be stuck with him for life. Defo had potnetial and needs a move away to develop that. Not sure Curbs can bring the best out of him. Sad to say but true me thinks.
Are you insane? You'd rather get rid of a top prospect in central defence and replace him with a fat, lazy, slow, wandering, out for himself Australian, then pair him with a kid??!!! Tomkins would certainly be able to learn from mistakes as he'd be seeing several a game! Neill has played a hell of a lot of games without too much rest, which could be solved over the summer. However, if he puts in a couple of performances like this seasons I'd be benching him straight away. Our partnership of Upson and Ferdinand was our strongest of the season yet you want to break that up and sell another youngster to Spares? Anton will make the grade next season without a doubt. Neill is on the way down with his career and saw us as a great last pay day. He's enjoying it, without too much effort while it lasts.
To be honest, I think he was doing ok up until he started playing for his country and doing the commute back and forth from UK to OZ and back again in mid season, I think that really f-u-c-k-ed him up, he thought he could handle doing both and he obviously cant, the time adjustment let alone the travel wore him down and i think he was only starting to regain himself the last two games probably, he needs to decide if he wants to play for us or play friendlies for his country and curbs should of told him that, of course if it's a major game he should be given leave to play for his country but to just take off to play in friendlies, well our Team should come first.
I agree and pointed this out before their last friendly when he flew to Oz on Saturday night, played midweek and flew back to London landing on the Friday. He was then picked on the Saturday. No way he was ok to play. Other Aussies like Kewell were granted leave. I also believe one of the OTHER reasons he joined WH instead of Liverpool, other than the whopping wages of course, was Curbs agreement he could play these games for Australia. That's got to be reviewed if he stays cos it ain't working for us!
I personally think he's not as good as we all thought he was,and i wouldn't be too disappointed if we sold him,for a good price obviously.I give him an F for failure.
I've lost count Den! The sight of him sitting on his arse as Ronaldo ran into our box for the first goal at Old Trafford summed it up for me. I was drawing attention to Neill as long ago as the Newcastle game when he was responsible for three in the same match! I think he may be useful as centre back cover but his right back days are over IMO.
I've been so disappointed by Lucas this year. He really fought hard last season and I was first in the queue to campaign for him as Captain. This season... Oh dear... He's just looked completely amateurish (if that's a word). All over whoever he's marking - losing his cool and nearly giving away stupid penalties - not what you want from your Captain. I really hope Scotty Parker gets made Captain next year.. I don't know about grades.. a D or something... The only good thing is - we don't necessarily need to get anyone new in to replace him .. step up Julien Faubert with Johnny Pants in reserve.

Anton Ferdinand has joined Roy Keane's Sunderland on a four year deal, he will be nearer to his brother and further away from temptation apparently.Who's onlineThere are currently 2 users and 14 guests online.
