UEFA Cup Final - Scouting Report.Submitted by Denbighammer on 15 May, 2008 - 19:41.
Some decent players on show and baring in mind what we need (central midfield creator, right back etc.) I'd like to suggest the following:----- ANDREI ARSHEVIN the young midfield creator - he was awful first half, totally muscled out of it by Rangers. Second half he was brilliant and created both goals with clever, incisive passing and generally looked class. I'm not sure if we could prise him away because he is the star and Zenit are pretty rich but if we are going to show ambition I'd love us to sign a player who looked very much in the mould of Pirlo, Deco or Modric. More realistic I thought was ALEXANDER ANYUKOV who played right wing back and reminded me of everything that Lucas isn't. Tackled hard but fair, was quick and got back when he went forward...which he did a lot. He stung the keepers fingers with a good shot and looked like he'd be ideal to go straight into a Prem team. Another who stood out (as he did in the semi against Fiorentina) is CARLOS CUELLAR the Rangers centre back. He is 26 - big, brave and really impressed me with his composed & powerful defending. I know we've got plenty of central defenders but they're not much use if they're always injured are they! Cuellar played his 61st game yesterday and still looked fresh & hungry. I think he would be pretty expensive (Rangers would want 6-9m I reckon) but he would be a fanstastic buy and would be ideal in our new look back four of Anyukov, Upson, Cuellar and Linda!! Anyone else see the game? Agree/disagree? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Areshevin was superb,
Areshevin was superb, admittidley i only watched the second half, but apparently the second half was more of an open game and he was fantastic. I would love to have him playing left mid for us as he would give us that creative spark of inspiration from midfield which we need. I didnt see much of their right back, and we dont need another centre back.

I'd love to see Arshevin at Upton Park. Looks to be quick and smart, ready-made for the Prem. It's not my money...go buy him BG.West Ham Till I Die!!!
As you say, Zenit are rolling in it. Why leave them for us if you are Russian? Personally I don't think a centre back is a priority. Right back, left back, left midfield are where we are lacking.
