Non-Google Friendly Quiz 4Submitted by Themanfromdelmonte on 5 July, 2008 - 11:11.
Name all the ex-West Ham players that have become mangers since the 60's?
( categories: Current Season )
A bit obvious but John Lyall
A bit obvious but John Lyall played for us and managed...er, Ipswich and some other team! I guess Ted Fenton the same although maybe doesn't fall in the 60's? One of the old timers will put me right on that one! Has anyone metioned Paul Ince? Geoff Hurst managed Chelsea. Cottee definately managed Barnet, I remember Sports Report coming on the radio and his first game was something like a 9-1 win! Couple of leftfields - Mike Marsh managed Burscough in the Unibond, Jimmy Quinn was at Northwich Vics and Mike Newell managed Luton recently. Ray Stewart managed Livingston and a couple of other Scots Leage clubs. I know Peter Brabrook managed Billericay...mainly cos he used to end up sat with us in the stand cos he was always banned! Eamonn Dolan managed Exeter City. Ilie Dumitrescu managed in Mexico I reckon. One of the Charles brothers managed abroad John or Clive I think. Dunno if anyones mentioned Ronnie Boyce- I think he did one game as caretaker between Macari and Bonzo?? Clyde Best managed Bermudas national side I think. Peter Eustace, Tommy Taylor, Paul Brush and Alvin Martin definatly managed Orient. Also, has anyone said Bobby Moore - managed Southend.

Most of those have been mentioned, though not with the clubs identified, which is a bigger challenge! Boyce, Best, Charles, Dolan and Brabrook are, I think, all new to the list.
Clyde Best did not manage Bermuda. I checked that one because I thought the same. And nor has Ticker Boyce. Alvin Martin did Southend. It was Tommy Taylor who managed Orient
I never said Ronnie Boyce managed Bermuda! I'm convinced that Boyce took charge of West Ham for one game between Lou Macari and Billy Bonds. Didn't Macari just not turn up for a match against Swindon (macari's former club and the team involved in the betting scandal)?
I think you are right about Boyce Den, it rang bells when I read it. Wasn't he reserve team coach or youth team coach at the time? Know he wasn't the obvious choice.
If I'm right I think Boyce was assistant manager and Bonzo was reserve boss therefore was somewhere with his team else when Macari no-showed - therefore Ticker had to step in. Boyce was one of my grandads favourite players and he always talked about him.
That's probably it, then when Bonds stepped up the natural order wasn't followed. My fondest memory of Boyce was "that goal" away to City, when he volleyed Corrigan's clearance straight back into the goal from the centre circle. Think Greaves made his debut that day. We scored 5! I was at Wembley watching England school boys versus West Germany school boys. From memory, we lost 3-1.
Malcolm Musgrove, Ron Tindall, John Dick, Joe Kirkup (player manager), Trevor Hartley, Tommy Taylor, Peter Butler
I can't find any record of John Dick managing anyone except 'Santos' of the Essex Corinthian League! Good knowledge of Trevor Hartley - managed Malaysia's national side. I'd never heard of Trevor Hartley (12 years before I was born I'm afraid) although I have heard of his brother J.R. - hell of an author he was!

Noel Cantwell, Dave Sexton and Dowie I think just about completes the list.
These mentioned already.. apologies to Den.. I should have scrolled down further! One more I forgot to mention was Francois van der Elst.
Really? I did Google Francois (In a non Google friendly quiz!) cos I thought he had managed Andelecht but nothing showed up.
Check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franky_Van_Der_Elst
Are there two? This page does not list West Ham and at the top it says see Francios Van Der Elst, another player. That one lists West Ham!
Yeah there are two of them, but seem to recall our Frankie becoming a manager for some obscure team either in the States or in the Benelux.
Jimmy Quinn! And Adrian Whitebread. Chris Hughton and Clive Allen have both been on the "staff" at Tottenham. Think both have taken the tiller between managers! Mike Newell!
Budgie Byrne - in South Africa.
The magnificent Mr Liam Brady of course.....Did MacAvennie manage a strip club in glasgow ?
Dave Sexton, Paul Ince, Iain Dowie, Ilie Dumitrescu (manages in Mexico methinks), Noel Cantwell managed Man U I think.
Dowie - took a long time for his name to be suggested! And Sexton and Cantwell! Ince has been listed!
John Radford, Mervyn Day & Mick McGiven
Here is a confession, I typed Robson meaning Allen. Going senile! Three Robsons and three Allens, easy mistake to make!
Julian Dicks manages the Shepherd & Dog Pub in Colchester, nice food
He did, but he's moved to Spain where he manages to play a round or two of golf. His brother often joins him so they play a round with 2 Dicks.
Yeah Del, Me n 'er used to frequent that pub when we lived in Elmstead - couldn't resist it. Plays golf only for fun now, but he was never really any good as a pro anyhow
Got him half an hour ago Dave. Did Paul Goddard get a top job? He was Youth Coach and Assistant manager I know.
