Two Players For Every Position?Submitted by Apache Indian Hammer on 24 July, 2008 - 08:57.
I'm guessing our goal is to have two players for every position that both push each other to perform better and can replace the first without any detriment to the team. Question is, how far out are we?
( categories: Current Season )
2 quality players for each
2 quality players for each position..........that is a joke ,we don't even have one quality player in some positions. Time is running out to sign players and it would seem BEHRAMI will be our only new face for the first team.Present squad :10th position is my prediction.

I thought I'd bring this up again as all of us on this site seemed to agree on which positions we needed to strengthen our squad. However, with Shorey going to Villa for ONLY £3.5m, I think it is obvious that Curbs, Nani and co, have a different idea of what is needed. So, my question is, where the hell do they think that we DO need strengthening?
Personally I'd be happy with Nicky Shorey and Eidur Gudjohnson for a combined fee of £9 million with Quashie and Davenport sold to recoup some of the cost.
LBM really needs to produce something special this season as last year he was awful. I'd give him till January and if he is still not doing it sell him and buy Barnetta.
I'd also like to see Tomkins, Sears, Collison, Widdowson and Kyel Reid come on this year and play a bigger part. It would be great if they all matured into good squad players (or better in the case of Sears) so that Curbs could spend money next season on 1 or 2 really big signings.
you forgot mullins and bowyer. Bowyer was our top scoring midfielder last season playing about 14 games and Mullins was our only reliable midfielder all season.
but i agree with the two strikers, let me also remind you that Jimmy Walker has never conceded a premiership goal :)
I didn't forget, I just thought that Mullins and Bowyer won't push Dyer, Parker and Noble to peak performance, same as Green won't be looking over his shoulder at Walker thinking if I drop a couple of catches, Walker will replace me in the team. I just don't want to see a repeat of a couple of years ago when we drifted out of the automatic UEFA cup places as we rested players (we had a Euro spot guaranteed cos of the cup anyway) and also in the Cup itself, Fletcher was our replacement for Mullins which cost us.
hate to remind you but i saw walker against portsmouth concede 4 2 years ago. Pardew rested the big players before the boro cup game. Still only conceded 4 tho!! haha
Ok, i dont know if anyone knows the facts. But everyone is asuming that Behrami was brought in to fill RB or maybe RW. But he can play with both feel (fairly well) can score goals with both feet and can also play all of midfield (LW/LM/CM/AMC/RM/RW). So whats not to say that if Etherington gets injured that Berhami wont get played LW and Neil shifted to RB.
The left back position is a definite position to strengthen, as are the forwards. If the worse case scenario happens and we do suffer the injuries like last season, I am not that convinced our back up in certain positions is good enough.I am fairly sure BEHRAMI will start right back and NEIL will partner UPSON in centre defence, with McCARTNEY at left back. The centre back pairing could prove to be a weakness against fast attackers since they are not renown for their pace.Left back position I have my doubts too with McCARTNEY ,a good player overall but not a great attacking option if we are using the left flank to attack,he is too defence minded. If BOA -MORTE plays to his best he is a quality player, and I know the pressure put on him from some of the fans didn't help his confidence. We definitely need another centre midfield creative player.BENAYOUN would have suited that position superbly but I have reservations concerning NOBLE and DYER ,whether they can put good consistent performances in week after week.NOBLE can blow hot and cold, his biggest weakness is not scoring enough.DYER has been out so long can he reach the same level he was at.
Our best eleven is looking okay, not brilliant ,but fairly strong for a WESTHAM side.Do not think we will get into the top six.But like CURB'S has said there is some weeks to go in the transfer window so we shall have to wait and see who he brings in.
I agree with your comments.
Mccartney is a decent enough player at left back, but we are short of cover for him.
Lucas Neill can play there, but rumour has it he will be going to Man City.
There is young Widdowson, who shows some promise but to through these boys in at the deep end would be suicide. However Tomkins and Sears did ok for us last year.
I think we are in need of a creative midfield to play along Parker, Dyer can push out wide and you are right about Noble. On his day he's top quality but consistency is his problem.
Behrami can play either flank and we haven't seen the best of Boamorte or Faubert yet.
I think at the back we'll have Ferdinand and Upson in the middle with Neill or Behrami and Mccartney at full-backs.
Midfield will be Parker,Ljungberg,Noble and Dyer with Ashton and Bellamy up front.
This isnt a bad line up but you are right if we get injuries, the back ups are limited.
Still fingers crossed for a decent season ahead.
ciao
Good question Apache, for me it needs to be a balancing act though. We are building up a decent squad and I like the way we seem to be looking at players with youth on their side. Some more quality additions would be great coupled with offloading some more fringe players. I would also like us to not lose sight in bringing on Sears, Tompkins & Collison, we need to see if they really are Premiership players. We also have others that are starting to push for places like the young left back that is currently doing well in the States. Like I say it will be a balancing act and one I hope Curbs is up to. I am off on holiday Saturday and I hope I return on the opening day of the season as optimistic as I am at the moment.
I think all postions have backup except left back and i stil think we need a new left winger if freddie does not mind playing that side sometimes.
I still think shorey would be a decent signing... he can play left mid too cant he?
High calibre competition is the quote, so new gk, badly need quality at left midfield, back up for linda, I think we are covered at central midfield, back up right back, maybe a ne quality striker how many games you think Deano and Bellers are going start together.
forwards: Sears and Cole, centre mids: Bowyer and Mullins, gk: possibly Walker? but we are being linked with Jan Lastuvka (Shaktar Donestk) as a backup for Green. That still leaves a back-up leftback needed, altho Spector (when fit), Neill, and Anton could play there if needed.
Do you think Ashton and Bellers will be thinking "I've got to play brilliantly today otherwise I'll lose my place in the team to Cole or Sears"? I can't see them quaking in their boots somehow. You're probably right about centre mid, but would still like to see a creative player brought in.
Probably not. On the other hand they do need to start bagging some goals - 30 between them for the season is a realistic target.
