Do we Have A Better Side than Our 2005/6 Team?

Submitted by Themanfromdelmonte on 7 August, 2008 - 08:34.
Our 2005/6 cup final side who finished 9th IMO was a better more powerful team with flair and style with a never say die spirit, which on many occasions saw us winning matching after going behind. I also believe that the side that won 7 out of 9 remaining matches to stave off relegation in 2006/7 was also a better side than our current team. Since the takeover around £53m has been spent on new players ( £25m net of sales) and wages have doubled to circa £50m per year. The debate is, given this investment have we moved forward, stayed still or even gone backwards or is the jury still out because of injuries?

Yes the current team is better. Go through them player for player. Green - better. Neill - better (just). McCartney - better. Ferdinand - better because older. Upson - better. Noble - better because older. (nothing too controversial there!). Parker v Mullins? Parker is better. Ashton, no difference. Bellyache v Zamora? Bellyache if fit! That leaves just two players. Etherington is still here so we have to call that the same. And of course, we have not replaced Yossi but Faubert or this new lad, or Dyer (if ever fit) all have the potential to offer a wide right threat, albeit none have Yossi's passing range. The problem is less the personnel and more the way the manager sends them out to play. Give Pardew this squad and we would be buzzing. That is an honest opinion, not a wind up!

Pardew was given two of the most talented young players in the world, they didn't exactly buzz under him did they?

Nope. PARDEW knew the whole set up stank and wanted to back players committed to the club, perhaps?

What about the team of 85/86, were they better than this team or the same as the 05/06 team? The 85/86 wage bill would have been tiny...its about as valid a comparison. That team (05/06) doesn't exist and to continually trawl it up is frankly pointless.

Den it's not pointless because we haven't progressed and have no players that were signed by Eggy apart from perhaps Parker & Upson who have a sell on value and despite multi-millions being spent by the new board with expectations raised very high we are no better off are we?

This up coming season bares all the hallmarks of 2006-07 season. After a great season and the club in an ideal position to kick on with some big signings we were duped with the likes of Carlton Cole,Tyrone Mears and John Paintsil. Not the sort of players to take your club onwards and upwards.Regardless of the arrival of Tevez and Mascherano on deadline day who were both mismanaged. Now with stability assured and again some major players needed all we have to show to date is Behrami who will have any significance in the first team.Again we are to be frustrated by a Manager that has not got a clue and a board that the longer things go on seem to lack the ambition required to succeed. Now another bone of contention has to be Nani? This guy has been brought in to target quality players, something Curbishley can't do.So why are we being linked to a 30 year old full back from Switzerland who could not cut it at Blackburn? Why is the thug Ben Thatcher even getting a trial? How comes an England fullback, born on our doorstep and continually linked to us been allowed to go to Villa for a mere £3.5m?Was it because he was fit,had attacking tendencies? In answer to your question 'No'!

05/06 season the best season i've seen in a long time, the team was dedicated to playing in the P.L they had 100% passion and most of our team was balanced and wore their heart on their sleeve. Pardew brought a few players that he knew would have a lot to proove to the world and personally i think if he'd been able to keep the changing room after the F.A cup then we'd be a million miles better off where we are now, but think something must of been said then when dean injured himself everythin came crashing down around that team thats why 06/07 season was bad although we done the double over manure and arsenhole

05-06 .. we had a team like this .. Carrol/Hislop, Konchesky, Anton, Gabbidon, Scaloni, Mullins, Coker, Benayoun, Etherington, Harewood, Sheringham/Zamora/Deano...Funny how most people would say that's a crap Championship quality squad when we made it 9th. 75% of the squad should be passion...05-06 would be a perfect example.

IMO even if Bellamy and Dyer were fit, we still had a better hungrier side in 2005/6 (collectively) than we have now as too many are here for the money!

Exactly; our 05-06 squad just came up from the Championship. All that mattered was playing their hearts out and staying in the Premier League. Every match we played that season, was one where we had everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Agreed. So how are we going to get that spirit back at Upton Park?

We should stop asking for "class" players. 05-06 was class. People are beginning to put price over passion. back then, we wanted players to come to our club to play football. The players who came to our club back then came because it would be a good experience for them, not for the high wages.

By getting relegated and then being promoted again.....
