Now We Know Why West Ham Sold Zamora

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 29 September, 2008 - 13:58.
Hammers 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage showed exactly why the club were wise to sell Bobby Zamora to the West Londoners for £4.8 Million. On three separate occasions the 'Z' man missed when it would have been easier to score, such was his profligacy that some of the home supporters were singing "do you remember which side you are on?". There were plenty of West Ham fans who were shocked when the club sold Zamora, but despite having a poor match on Saturday his replacement, David DiMichelle, showed the gulf in talent between the two players. Other high profile departures Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney have hardly covered themselves in glory since joining Sunderland, so maybe the Board and Gianluca Nani do know what they are doing. - Ed

Love to say I told you so, but I was right about Curbs not being good for us, the players are happy, the fans, Zola's interview after the fulham game was what I wanted to hear, open attacking football, Etherington played a blinder and just maybe we don't need Ashton and should cash in.
Submitted by A Hammer on 1 October, 2008 - 10:44.
Er '...Curbs not being good for us...' makes him out to be an axe murderer: He saved us, he got us tenth last season & left us in sixth, man! How do you know that '...the players are happy..'? They are playing for their place ...it's a honeymoon, so I'm suggesting the perspective is biased: Hopeful, yes, but gently-gently until we play the adults instead of the league minnows, eh!

Reserve team - It looks like our defence is very shaky, but well done Freddy The Fox..There is no chance Zola would approve to move him out..

Lets not forget that Zamora has been a fantastic player for us at times and has scored more significant goals for us than many other hammers strikers in our history. He is a true claret and blue hard working player, that regardless of his ups and downs, always wanted it and gave 110%. I think we should leave it at that and not post topics on 'now we know why we sold him!' Have a bit of respect.

Has anyone else noticed that Tevez is barely getting a game at Man U now,im wondering if maybe there is some concern on their contract with him or that Tevez has been affected by the Sheffield utd thingy.I cant believe for the life of me that Tevez isnt good enough, weird eh.CJ

I totally disagree with this post, Zamora is a good player and better than a lot of the c**** we have in the side. He is a hammer through and through so i'm not surprised he missed. I would have actually preferred for us to sell Ashton for mega money and kept onto Zamora, because I think Ashton is finished, sell him and get a regular 1st teamer in, he will only warm the physio table for the rest of his career, he has never proven that he is class, only glimpses adn lets face it Anton had glimses. Also, I think we should get rid of Bellamy, sell him for the same money and again get a not so injury prone player. We could get around 17-20m for the both, if we keep them i reckon in the next 3 seasons they'll only play 15 games max each!! Plus unless we get takenover the board will need the money!

Ok i know its boring to speak about the Sheffield Utd case but ive heard something today that had me worried, ive been told that during this latest hearing, its come about that Duxbury did in fact lie again to the premier league,a lie that the FA could look into again and could affirm our relegation even after all this time.Does anyone have any info on this?CJ

C15: If he lied then he is culpable so let him go down. I aint with him ...either that or we can counter-sue the brief who represented him for the damages - or make an insurance claim from 'Numpties-R-Us'. The bottom-line is that I'm not paying. Next...

I cannot believe that there are calls on here to sell Freddie Sears. Just because the kid (and he IS still a kid) hasn`t scored a dozen goals since making the 1st team there are bloody idiots calling for him to go. For christs sake give him a chance, one day he`s likely to be our next Tony Cottee. I suppose we should get rid of Collison, Reid, Tomkins etc while we are at it, then you could moan about the management selling our accadamy products as per the last decade + . These kids are our future, stop being so damn short sighted.

I agree with you Woolly, well said.Sears needs time, and with time i do believe he will be yet another talented player to come off our conveyor belt. There is talk that Sears will be joining Arsenal but that rumour started on football rumours and its since appeared in the Daily Snail (hates us) and a couple of others,im hoping that Sears will stay at WH and look to learn a great deal from Zola who im sure will not want to see him leave. i agree. I think he makes some brilliant runs, he is way beyond his years in football knowledge. He can never play up front by himself which he did against watford but could be great if we put him up with a great target man. I really wanna see him play with carlton cole or see him on the wing where di michelle has been playing and see how is crosses of the ball are.

Anyone else Concerned? I heard last night that the Icelandic goverment have had to bail out Glitnir Iceland's third largest bank with a 600 million Euros package. "Despite the fact that the other two large Icelandic banks are stronger in their liquidity profiles, the risk is the market decides Landsbanki and Kaupthing are in similar trouble," Bill Blain, who produces a daily market report for bond broker KNG Securities LLP in London, said on Monday in an interview. "If they both tumble into a liquidity death-spiral it may precipitate a deeper Iceland crisis which the government may struggle to solve." Although with the deepening global financial crisis, West ham is rightly low on most people's list of priorities, I am worried about our future. It could be a whole lot worse than not having enough to spend on transfers.
Submitted by Rotherfield Hammer on 30 September, 2008 - 15:33.
A method for assessing the risk of a bank is known as CDS or Credit Default Swap. The higher the figure the more at risk a bank is. Six months ago Lloyds TSB had a good figure of around 133. HBOS, had a more worrying figure of 235 and as you will know they were bought by Lloyds TSB a couple of weeks ago because there was a danger of them going under. Six months ago one bank that went under, Bear Stearns had a rating of 720. At the same time, Landsbanki had a rating not far short of that at 610. The Financial Mail at the time said about Landsbanki (and another bank called Kaupthing which was in an even worse state at 856, "These banks are now seen as the most unsafe in the developed world. Of course, no one can be sure that disaster looms for anyone, but the figures on credit default swaps show clearly where investment professionals think the big risks are.You have been warned." That was back in March when things were not half as bad as they are now. So the long and the short of it is you're dead right Chalkie. We could be deep in the doo doos.
Submitted by chalkntalk on 30 September, 2008 - 18:05.
Thanks for that Rotherfield. Really interesting. I guess, like a lot of people at the moment we just need to keep our fingers crossed for the markets to improve - and our injury crisis too!

i think this is a great post by nev and agree with what he has to say ... but everyone else is entitled to an opinion. i agree with the fact that so far the board and nani have done a excellent job in their activity of signing new players. Llunga looks very good and there have been glimpses of di canio in di michele. I was also impressed in how we contucted ourselves in the transfer market. we could hold our head high unlike the likes of man city who told everyone how much they were spending and who on, putting unnecessary pressure on selling clubs. The way united and fergs think that when they are interested in a player they automatically must become a united player with no regard for the selling team, fans or board.....let alone premiership rules. And finally (had to get this one in) the way totenham spend money on anyone and anything that comes on sale with a pricetag in the 20m region cos if they are being sold for that much....they must be good emphasis. I am still impressed with the way we are handling the appiah case, yes we have been told we are interested but his wage demands are what 60,000....i wouldnt give him it and it shows how far we have come from the eggy era already. If appiah wants to play for west ham we will offer him a sound contract and he will come for the greatness of the club and football, not souly the money. I was sad to see mcCartney go cos i still feel he is a gem at left back but the sale of ferdinand was a touch of class. i cant remember what one but one of villas goals was definetly his fault on saturday. yes he had potential but he was a bit of a hot head and 8mill was a good price. One thing that i dont agree with is tha zamora is better then cole. No way he has head the line for us awesomely so far this season and has got a few goals. he is younger then zamora, quicker and stronger. If zola can unlock that magic of goalscoring in him we have got the real deal. he was loved by ranieri at chelsea and fabio was more then impressed on sat. I am going to be interested on our activity in the january. i feel that the squad is too big but this should not be changed in january becasue that will disrupt the foundations of the squad, look what has happened at S***s. Hopefully some will go in jan and we will have the funds behind zola (which the board have promised) to get in some real quality which im sure zola and clarky already have their eyes on. things are looking good post curbs era, they werent looking to bad beforehand but we could take real strides in the next season........BRING IT ON !!!!

Z Man. I can see how some people are critical of this post: we all remember the great things Bobby Zamora did for West Ham. But at the same time, I see what Nev is saying. At least in this one match, Zamora looked much the same as when he came on for us last season -- unlikely to score a goal. After a while I actually began to feel safe about any threat that Fulham posed. Yes, Bobby got into good position and sometimes had our defence beat; but he really did not even threaten with one shot. His chance for a clear header on a free kick really proved the point. I wish him well with Fulham and hope he gets a hat trick against S***s, but I think we are moving ahead now. Don't know if Di Michele is the answer, but he's the shape of things to come.

Just a Rumour. Have you noticed how nowadays the transfer rumours simply never stop? Used to be we could get down to football from August to December without so much drama; now everybody can hint that they're going everywhere for zillions of pounds. I smell an agent in all this!!! Look, whether Sears stays or goes, we're gonna have a good team in the future. He's got potential, yes. But at present he doesn't have the build of a football legend, or the skill of a football prodigy. So as things stands, he looks to be good, but not irreplaceable. I'm sure West Ham want him to stay (and most fans do as well), so if he goes, that would be because it was his decision. Seems silly, though, because he wouldn't get more (most probably less) chances at Le Arse than at West Ham. I wouldn't worry too much about it. BRING ON BOLTON!!! BRING ON BOLTON!!! BRING ON BOLTON!!!

I was as unhappy as anyone else when the Z-man was pushed out. He was one of us, one of our own who bleeds claret and blue and didnt mind telling everyone. Now i think that we all know that he wasnt sold for tactical reasons or to make room for a better striker. He was sold purely for financial gains. But do we look at his ability through rose tinted glasses because of his love of everything claret and blue? The fact of the matter is that his scoring record for WHU is 152 played 40 goals scored (almost 1 in 4) including one year in the fizzy league and a run of 21 games without scoring in the fateful 06-07 season. It wasnt until watching him on saturday that i realised he always needed four clear cut chances to score one goal which very few strikers outside the top four get. So it would apear we got lucky, and i for one put up my hands and say i thought that cole should have pushed before Bobby but Carlton is now undoubtedly our most improved player and looks perfect for Zola's 4-3-3 system. So Z-man we love you and wish you well but come on Cole keep knocking them in. WHTID

Glad in a way as Cole has a lot more potential than Zamora. He could with the right finishing be a 15 goal a season striker, however its always to see a commited hammer go.

Ok he mis- judged a header but the rest of his chances werent as easy as you make out! iD STILL PREFER HIM OVER COLE! having said that I think Cole is vastly improved this season from the FIRST game and is looking the most confident I have seen him, but to dis Zamo is just idle journalism.

For those people saying we should have kept the ZMAN and got rid of Carlton I think you guys are wrong, I really think CC is the new Z. I really haven't seen him complain yet and is a descent target. I think sometimes Carlton holds the ball up to long trying to dribble people but think of all the countless times Carlton has saved us on set pieces. I love the zman as much as anybody but I prefer carlton being 3rd choice over the zman

Just seen on Knumb, that we are looking at Diego Tristan, and he is training with the squad. Apparantly he is out of contract, but a bit old, but may be good coverage up front. Looked on You Tube, he looks good and does not loose his bottle when one on one with the goalie, that, so far this season we have not been good at. Apologies for off topic, but worth looking at.. As far as Zamora, I agree with Nev, Zamora's finnishing is not clinical enough, and if he does not improve he will end up in the fizzy league with or without Fulham.. I would like to have swapped him for Jimmy Bullard?? I wish Zamora luck and hope he can turn it around.Florida Hammer

I can see where Neville is coming from and I tend to agree - only thing I would say is Zamora did change things and linked up when he came off the bench and got things going when we were going stale - I will watch and see what happens with Fulham this year: i'd love it if Fulham pulled one over on their local rivals and Zamora scored! Mind you I'd love it if we did as well! My big wants this season are to do the double over spurts and send chelscum away with a sting. That would go a long way to making my season. As to Anton- I think he has to settle in, he had his best time with us when the back 4 all went like clockwork, that will take time at sunderland. But all in all probably good business

I agree totally, Zamora has flashes of brilliance then goes cold. That said you could never fault him for effort. I have always had reservations with Anton Ferdinand. So 8 million for him was certainly good business. Unfortunately with Gabbidon still unfit we struggling for strong central defenders. With Mr.Zola's new priorities we shouldn't need a good defence anyway. Come on you IRONS!!
