Basildon-Iron – Eating his own wordsSubmitted by basildon-iron on 4 December, 2008 - 13:59.
Some of you may remember a fair few weeks back I posted on here that I was quite vehemently against Matthew Upson and James Collins being paired up in the middle of defence. Well here I am admitting that I was talking out of my arse. I have been massively impressed with the partnership they have formed. For the record I never questioned Collins ability I was only questioning the partnership. One thing I would say is that since the England/Germany game Matthew Upson has improved ten-fold and without that improvement I still believe that pairing could’ve proved a bit shaky but so far they seem to be working really well together. What is frustrating me at the minute is what is going on with Matty Ethrington? When Zola first came in matty was being touted around as his new golden boy and now he’s getting on the bench every game but luis boa morte is getting put on before him. If Zola’s dropping of him was down to his gambling lapse surely his message must have got through by now? We seriously lack width at the minute, Faubert is just not up to the job full stop, I was willing to give him time to prove himself when he got injury free but I think he is awful, no wonder our only competition in signing him was Rangers. Behrami is a class act but he’s not an out and out winger and often will drift inside, all our attacking play seems to be filtered through the right but when it breaks down we’re relying on Neill. Get Ethrington back in the team, that’ll stop Bellamy tracking back like he has been and keep him in the area where he’s going to do the most damage. I think Zola is just a couple of changes away from producing a decent footballing team who are capable of going out there and not only competing but winning against most other premiership teams. That’s all we’re after isn’t it?

Well done mate, hope the humble pie didn't stick in your throat too much. Good to have you back! Now, if Faubert scores three against Tottenham I expect to see you whipping yourself up and down Green Street each Saturday between now and the end of the season!
Faubert scoring 3…..dont think I’ll ever have to worry about that, is it just me or does Faubert look like he cant even kick a ball properly? he always hits it with his ankle and never gets it off the ground. His corners are worse than what Di canios used to be!
Some good sense and observations there Bas..It's nice too see some people can admit errors of judgement on here, good for you and I agree that one or two 'decent' signings could see the other potential match winning players played in position..Would love too see a Yossi type player back in the squad and also Collinson given a more prominent role..COYHumblePieIrons..
I don’t even think its new signings he necessarily needs, play Collinson in the middle with Parker adopting a more holding role, get ethrington back in on the left, stick Behrami out on the right and then for me all Zola’s got to worry about is who to partner with Bellamy. Carlton Cole doesn’t look up for it at the minute, he’s been woeful since he returned from his ban, Is Sears worth sticking up top with bellamy for a few games and seeing how it goes, is Tristian ever gonna see the light of day? I think we’ve seen Di Michele is not up to the job. Is Zola going to be given money to spend in January, if he is he desperately needs a goal scorer, we haven’t got one player at the club whos going to get us 20+ goals a season and without that we’re not going to get anywhere we’ll always be the same old west ham.
Bowyer is on his way to Birmingham in the window and the same rumour has it that the funds as wages will be used to bring in a new striker on loan from Italy
I think we will see alot more of Collinson, but with the last two away matches they both have experienced playmaking midfields which I think is ahy Bowyer and then Mullins came in to hold that off and it worked a treat Gerrard was taken out of the game, he done hardly anything all game COYI
Newsflash, shock horror. Agree with all of that fella, and that's a first for me and you.
