Take a risk with Charlie

Submitted by norniron on Fri, 24/07/2015 - 14:36

Ever growing hints that West Ham is Austin's preferred choice. Although the club seem to think that £15m is too high and would not be willing to pay more than £10m, I think the extra £5m would be well worth the risk given the value of each goal, particularly given what the coming season means and our perennial struggle to find goals. God forbid Sakho gets injured - we got an indication last night where that would leave us. Throw a couple of make-shifts in too.

I would like him to come to us if it is within our finances. Looks like we are making a second bid for Mirallas. We desperately need a winger who can cross and score. Jarvis try as he might cannot do it. Assuming we get Mirallas for 8 million how much do we have left? We need to offload a few players and see if we can make up the rest for Austin pronto. Last night was pretty shocking!

Steve McClaren has denied strong reports that Newcastle are close to signing Charlie Austin; indeed he has publically (on SSN) and in a local Geordie paper, said that Newcastle have not even been in touch with QPR, nor they with NUFC, and that it's all just gossip.
It also seems that our management are not, and never have been interested in buying Austin. Looks like QPR's asking price has put people off. Our owners keep looking for a cheap option, but with Valencia's injury, is it time to think again about Austin?
Cash + player/s (maybe Jarvis and Nolan) would be a great solution for us, but would they be interested?

Looking at it seriously Nolan & Jarvis might be tempting but your offering a player in Nolan that may be. Good captain but anyone can see that he is passed his use by date. Maybe Miaga and Jarvis as they would be getting a striker and a winger and cash .

and that would be a good deal as he showed his ability only last season in the PL, risking someone from overseas without the experience in the PL is too ricky.

I just read this on newsnow so it might be a deal QPR would accept with £11 m for Austin and Jarvis (4m) as an offer.

Brings the fee down to 13,999,999.99. Plus the fact they'd have to pay him is what's putting them off. How often do you pay for a shite??

I read this morning that we are about to offer 11m & jarvis,i think that would be great business. We need a proven striker to accommodate sakho, simple as that...

I cannot see Sakho lasting most of the season on his own. Carroll should be back soon, but Austin would give us so much more. I'd start with Sakho and Austin up top at home and rotate them for away game. Could be our next Cottee & McAvennie.

A lot of people are saying this but Bilic doesn't seem to play 2 up front, in fact there aren't many/ if any teams in the Premiership that do, with that in mind the midfield have to support Sakho. I agree we need reinforcements up front but surely Sakho should be given first spot in the team, he was fantastic last season in a struggling side

Sakho is our top striker, no doubt in my mind, Carroll has to prove he can still play and NOT break down (BIG questions). A new striker does NOT replace Sakho. I actually think a Mirallas, or a similar quality attacking midfielder is at least as important (if not more so) as a new front man. Attacking creative midfielders can score goals almost as well as strikers, and we can't rely on Payet to create everything.

Agreed which is why I can't get my head around spending £15 million pounds on a striker, may as well write Carroll off IMO, can't see him ever staying fit, Valencia will be back at some point, all we need is decent back up to Sakho but to spend large money on Austin would be ludicrous, we could get 2 very good players for that money, we still need players that can play in wide positions so the money could be better spent

You say we don't need a CF ( or words to that affect) BUT God forbid anything happens to s Sakho!!! How many goals do you realistically think we are going to get from Valencia and Carroll this season? I don't want to appear pessimistic but I wouldn't bet on any!!! Like yourself I have long advocated for more supply but I think with Payet,Lanzini,Zarete,Obiong,Kayoute and possibly Samuelson we HOPEFULLY have gone some way to addressing this ( would still love to see Miracles onboard) but what would the point be of having them all providing if we only have Sakho to lead the line and he either gets injured or doesn't produce?!

I think we will get more goals from other positions this season ( let's be honest we couldn't really get less) but its usually how many your CF gets that determines how successful (or not) you are.... We need addition there ( and have to be honest and say should Carroll ever get fit I would move him on too injury prone now).

Who would you be bringing in that you would expect to score regularly at this level a lot cheaper?!

We definitely need strikers but my point was I wouldn't waste £15 million and an alleged £85k a week on Austin when there are areas that still need improvement, I think either the loan market or a look at players like Lambert or Berbatov, both would score goals imo, Lambert has gone elsewhere but there must be similar around for not much money, particularly as we're only looking for cover for Sakho

Actually advocated for Berbatov on another site ( have to say it was not a
popular suggestion).

I would have him in a heartbeat.

Proven goalscorer who would fit into any team such as is his football brain and would be good foil behind Sahko.

But it again begs the question " should anything hapen to Sakho who would lead the line"?

If we don't address that question before the transfer window closes we could rue it.

We have cover in all other positions ( though right back looks thin) as does genuine width.

We definitely need cover but I just wouldn't gamble that obscene amount of money on a player with 1 good season under his belt, he won't give us the movement or pace that Sakho does, he's more like a Sam Allardyce signing I think, if we get Hernandez then I'd be happier, proven in this league and in other top leagues, and for less money, maybe Berbatov as well who would still give the team more than a Charlie Austin IMO

you have to look at the players age when considering a bid , what is he mid 20's i reckon he's got a good future , come on sugo dont let him slip through your fingers

Burkie 1

In the top 3 players of the PL last season for the most 'offsides' and the most 'missed clear chances'? Charlie Austin so although you have to make chances and get in god positions, give yourself a yard or 2 and hit the bloody target for £15m!!! or I will be on your case and I'm a pig farmer.....
