Pardew Finally Gets His ManSubmitted by Neville Nixon on 30 June, 2006 - 12:37.
Wset Ham manager Alan Pardew has finally managed to bring Charlton's Luke Young to the Boleyn. The England International who began his career with Tottenham has at last has his move endorsed by new Addicks manager ex-Hammer Iain Dowie.
The move had been agreed in principal with the player a while ago, the stumbling block was the fee and the need to find a replacement for the right back who was also the club's captain.
Young will link up with Paul Konchesky and Jonathan Spector who both played for the club under ex-manager Alan Cubishley.
The deal, while being reported all over the media, will not officially be announced until July 1st because of the fiscal year structure which would see a post June signing falling into the second half of the year.
The exact fee is not known at the moment, but will eventually be £4 Million with add ons and a sell on clause, with the player signing a four year contract.
The Carlton Cole deal from Chelsea is a little less clear cut, with the player considering his options, if he did arrive at the Boleyn, he may find himself well down the pecking order, something he and his advisers will obviously be thinking about.
When we contacted the Hammers press agent about both moves, we were told that "something will be announced soon", when further pushed he did confirm that there would be more than one new arrival to discuss when the club have the official press call.
IMPORTANT Now just to make us look stupid, we have been told that there may well be no announcement before monday, apparently the comercial depatment don't want the signing to be overshadowed by the England v Portugal match. The chorus of told you so will doubtless ring, but we can only do our best. - Ed

Could I ask why on earth we are signing someone from Preston? We are playing European Football now and i doubt a championship player is going to help us. We might not be getting Luke Young, but we certainly don't need a preston player. No offence, he might be a good player, but think about it, he is in the Coca-Cola-Championship. Ask Preston for a friendly and see if he plays well then. Cause we need UEFA cup experienced players now not a Coca cola championship play-off one. Would Sol Campbell be useful? since he can win headers and is experienced, eh? Because if we wanted him he would accept us and not Pompey because they are relegation Battlers not UEFA cup fighters. What about JiriJarosik? plays for Chelsea i think and transfer Listed i believe, Or even maybe Lucio (Brazilian) i might need to take my head out of the clouds but it's worth a try isnt it? and a much better player then Mears

LoL it's all paper talk every think people read in paper's it bullcrap what about Malbranque? The paper said we were going to sign him, and everyone belived it. Now where is he? Nothing else about him, the only person who knows who we are signing or signed* is AP himself. But i am sure by next season we will have a strong club like we did before Glenn Roeder!
not to sure about mears , he wasnt good enough when he was at man city so they let him go ! so why all of a sudden is he premiership class ? and what about his broken shin , ? bit of a gamble ? but if charlton aint letting young go then we will have to trust pardew he has come up trumps before
if charlton want to sign him he must be crap crappy klint
on sky sports.com it says that west ham are the mistery club
that mears has come down to london to see i really do hope that this is wrong because we ar talking about a player what nobody
has heard off ok it does say that he had a good season
bt can you just think what will happen if he comes
up against somebody like henry or evan defo the little c**t come to think off it
he may be good but this is not the message we want to send out
that we are signing championship players
I REALLY DO I HOPE SKYSPORTS ARE WRONG ON THIS ONE

i dont think mears fits into this group of players and its just a loada bullshit
BBC site reports Mears being in London but doesn't mention us. Maybe he's at Charlton and if so that might allow us to finally get Young. I find it hard to believe that we are trying to sign Mears as we've not even been linked with him before. Young still hasn't signed a new deal and I'd be very surprised if he chose to stay with Charlton rather than come to West Ham.
1) Leave the Nev fella alone people he does a fantastic job running this site and the truth is nobody knows what the truth is at the moment we just have to wait we will never get anything from AP on who he is and who he isnt trying to buy in case it scuppers the deal.
2) I reckon Dowie is trying to stamp his mark on Charlton by not losing his captain / top player just as he takes over the job, if he doesnt all his other top boys could well lose faith in him and be open to moves as well so this move could be scuppered by politics.
Can you imagine if we sign Mears and not Young? Have nothing against Mears having never seen him play but Pardew talked about making signings that were statements of intent. If we sign Mears what are we saying - couldn't get a player from a mediocre side to join us so went for the guy Charlton would have to replace Young. Something is not right here. I'm just hoping this is more smoke and mirrors stuff and it is Charlton signing Mears and us Young.
This Luke Young saga seems to be very similar to the 'Curbishley affair' a few years back, when old Harry left. I might be wrong here, but it looks as though the board have failed to show any ambition and provide AP with the funds to buy Young. No disrespect to Charlton, but I'm pretty sure that Young would have definitely joined us if we made a bid acceptable to the club. It's the same thing with Curbishley. Being a former Hammer (and a big fan), he'd have certainly took up the offer of the manager's job at a considerably larger club. However, we all know that the board were unprepared to pay the compensation fee... and the incompetent, weak and feeble Roeder got us relegated.
We're just like Aston Villa, although I'd like to think our supporters are quite a fair bit better than theirs. Obviously, we both play in claret and blue, and share a proud history of winning a major European trophy. However, both our chairman seem to lack ambition... although 'Deadly Doug' provided John Gregory millions to spend during his reign at the club.
We'll always be an 'average mid-table team with great support' if we don't show a little more ambition. So please board...
GIVE PARDEW THE FUNDS TO MAKE THIS CLUB A BIG NAME AGAIN!!!
I REALLY FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE WESTHAM WOULD SIGN THIS mears GUY AS ALLAN PARDEW SAID HE WANTS TO SIGN 3-4 BIG NAME PLAYER WHICH THIS GUY AINT BUT YOU NEVER KNOW HE MIGHT BE THE NEXT RIGHT SIDED ASHLEY COLE
i understand your frustration m8 but if he does join us i hope he is as good as that curtis davies
Does the club really want to be among the 'leading elite' again, for the first time in over two decades?
mears looked shaky in the playoffs when playing againts leeds i dont understand why brown wont let pards have 20 mil like smaller clubs than us are getting.
If it is Mears then I back AP he must see something in the lad that he thinks he can mould into the WHam way, 'calm down dear its only a fullback'
If Luke Young does sign for us,then i will wear a Gooners shirt for a day,and put a photo of me in it on here. That's how confident i am that we won't sign him.I would wear a pathetic pathetics shirt, but i aint that f*cking stupid!
Hmmm, hope you've got taut muscles and a cheeky grin. Luke Young and you at the same time ... it's more than a guy like me could possibly hope for.
Yours in anticaption ...
SACK THE BOARD!!! Then pards might get a fair amount of cash to spend on the big named players we the fans were all promised to take our club forward.
i am not happy about this preston guy joining us, we the fans were promised big name signings what do u call this
exacly its a joke pardew should stretch the budget to land young,im not happy about any of the signings we have made. clubs like wigan are offering 15 mil for players pardew gets 10 million and spends nearly half of it on a untried prem player from preston whats going on. carlton cole is not good enough he scored about 6 goals when at villa on loan 2 years ago we need established players to take us far in europe and to the next level in the prem next year.
SkySports are reporting that Mears is in London for talks, but not at Charlton he is talking to us and only needs to agree terms
He is talking to Charlton and NOT West Ham... get it right! Young will be a West Ham player within the nest few days. Why would we pay an 'arm and a leg' for an Championship-level full-back? That's a typical 'Charlton thing to do'!
Sky Sports are saying that Preston have accepted an offer for Mears so he's pretty much London bound, i just hope it is Charlton who are in for him and not us!
i would like to correct myself it is west ham who skysports.com understands mears is in talks with does this mean luke young is not comming this is another negative signing if it happens in my view what do you guys think.
dont know anything about the dude so don't wanna comment on him just yet but it does seem we're just settling for anyone because we can't get young. if we end up with mears 3mill and cole 2mill surely pards has still got 5 mill to spunk?
