The Real Reason Moyes Has No Money

The best laid plans of mice and men are there to be exposed by the trials and tribulations that life has prepared for them, an expression loosely taken from the Robert Burns' poem 'To a Mouse', might well be used as a paraphrase to explain West Ham United's lack of activity in the transfer market, with the club seemingly unable to even raise 'small' sums like £2 Million to invest in lower league players such as Antonee Robinson, which was the sum Sheffield United signed the full back for from Wigan who have gone in to administration.

Why couldn't West Ham bid for such a very promising young player who was available for 'chicken feed' money? The reason is painfully simple and is a classic example of why you should not put all your eggs in one basket, essentially it had been hoped by the club's owners that sufficient progress was going to be made in order for the club to 'firm up' a top six position. Had things gone the way that had been hoped for, 'surplus' players coming from an 'elite' side would have had more market value as opposed to those from a team that escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Obviously the Covid-19 'affect' has exasperated the situation, but the reality is that West Ham United, just like many other teams, spent well past their budget and were 'living beyond' their means, anticipating 'substantial' funds from the sales of players such as Manuel Lanzini and the like.

No one could have envisaged the 'calamity' that was about to befall the World, least of all football clubs, but unfortunately the crisis came just as West Ham were beginning a period of transition and rebuilding, the problem now is the club simply cannot afford to spend any significant money on new players and really do have to sell before they can buy. Of course the club's owners might actually do what some thought would never happen, and that is either sell up, or bring in the sort of serious investment that would relinquish their overall control of the club to below 51%.

Maybe it might all get to the point where messrs Sullivan & Gold will decide it's not worth the effort anymore, some fans would love that, but be careful what you wish for, it might just happen, are fans really prepared to get rid of the 'devil they know' for one they don't? - Ed

I cant see David Sullivan giving up but I can see him eventually retiring and handing over his 55% or so share holding to his son Jack who has been in control of the Ladies team for over two years now and has just completed some promising transfer business in the women's super league. I see it as part of Jacks apprenticeship before he takes over from his Dad. David Gold may retire but in all honesty he appears to leave it all to David Sullivan anyway. So the Sullivan's look like they are staying. Moyes is staying and despite no real money and only one real asset to sell (Declan Rice) to get any real money, West Ham will have the same squad next season imo, unless Declan goes to Chelsea.

A D Bonds

I agree with the team being the same next season,as cant see a big clearout in the time we have got, just hope we move on from where we left off, using anderson and haller regular will certainly be no benefit,i agree with you and 65 that i reckon sullivan will hand it across to his sons, but i dont have much faith in that.

Like you state Nev, the Pellegrini era failed miserably , for a club Westham's size the board invested heavily in a manager like no other, and they were expecting a good return. But it went sour ,the club have expensive players that have not lived up to expectation and the sad reality is the football quality proved the same. This primarily is down to Pellegrini and Hussilos, they were not up to the job , and the board must be really cursing their decision in making such an appointment. It's a case of once bitten,we are not going to see a repeat of big money spinning investment while they are in control.Westham will continue to be a team in limbo, going nowhere, just treading water, unless investors come on board or the board choose to sell. Moyes is working under stressful conditions,no decent money to spend, just reliant on his experience in finding a bargain buy.He bought wisely in Bowen and Soucek ,but they cost a fair wedge ,from the sounds of it , players must be moved on to bring in some revenue. It would be a sad day to sell your crown jewels in Rice. I would much rather the club make some money by moving on Anderson and Haller if a team comes in for them but we shall see. Moyes has something to prove and he will be looking to give the fans something to believe in.

He's kept us up TWICE, The first time he was treated shabbily and now he's inherited a squad that was full of overpaid 'stars' who just turned up week after week for their wages and did sod all on the pitch. Give him a break!!

im not a fan of sullivan nor am i huge hater. david gold for me is an irrelevance as well. as far as i am concerned this club has been poisoned by that wman i refuse to name. only when she is gone will i even think about taking this club seriously again. until then i only listen to what intelliigent fans and people like noble have to say. the fact a man as solid as stuart pearce wouldnt come back says everything and i think the "family club" ethic is based on players only now nd down to noble (and rices) passion for our club. the stadium is a fiasco but a lot of the crap is purely down to the negotiations she handled allowing for example us to have to play 3 away games due to incompetence on her part. that should have been a red line. she is the most vile egotistical and ignorant guardian of a football clubs brand and heritage as you could ever wish to see. yes people might say "i take it you dont like her" in jest - well actually i dont have a great life and after my family and dog nothing matters more to me than the club i have loved for 50 years and i honestly see her as the enemy. the woman with the iron fist up sullivans backside.

that made me laugh. the headline but not the sentiment! i can accept the owners being with us but not the employee which is all she essentially is. for me just seeing a new chief exec - man or woman - with a far more humble approach would be a huge step forward. i suppose i feel like this because i do accept fans cant ake owners sell up but why on earth put up with this awful lady muck employee.

knew why SuGo and their moll wanted to 'rescue' our club. They knew that a move to the ridiculously named 'London' Stadium was going to be a gimme and that they'd make a killing!!!
All this being fans since 1864 is a load of botox.....MONEY is all they're interested in.
