Reasons Why West Ham Didn't Buy During The Window

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 19 February, 2008 - 20:09.
Despite the news that Craig Bellamy is probably ruled out for the rest of the season, West Ham United owner and chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is happy with the clubs procurement policy. Next year his son, Thor, is due to take a much more 'hands on' role, and as he is ten times wealthier than his old man, he might make the difference between Championship aspirations and Champions league! Gudmundsson has been careful to shield his son from the flack connected with the Tevez and Mascherano transfer fiasco. To this purpose the chairman took note of the advice that he was given by friends at the Icelandic FA, he was told that the impending English FA investigations in to all current transfers was something to be avoided and as such any transfer activity during the January window would be subject to intense scrutiny and more importantly might have led to the re-opening of investigations into the Argentine duo's transfers. What ever the merits of his decision, fans should appreciate that Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and his family are in it for the long haul, and unlike the Glazers and the Pool yanks, have not taken out loans to fulfil their ambitions! - Ed

Not sure I go with the Argentinian duo theory as to why WHUFC did not buy any players during the January transfer window. I hear that Alan Curbishley and the board basically said lets see how this group of players goes and we will buy better players in the summer when they will be at a more sensible price and not rushed through. Z man and Bellamy were recovering at the time and Deano was back, so on paper we did not need anyone. With foresight Bellamy looks to be out for a lot longer and Deano has lost something and is still struggling but Z man is back next week so who knows we might just beat Chelski and the push for Europe will really begin!!!

Good to hear that about our owners Nev.I was getting slightly concerned that Mr.Gudmundsson was only in it to line his pockets, like a certain Mr.Brown.Be interesting to see how much money is made available to Curbishley,(or whoever is in charge),at the end of the season.

Hammers to Take Down FFC! Craven: contemptibly lacking in courage; cowardly. I hear that FFC plan to play a "physical" match, i.e. not football. Well, we'll show 'em a thing or two. They are hopeful of dragging us into a slow, dull, aching, midfield morass, but we are going to slam the proverbial Cottage door on their faces. Lord Noble is back. The Magic Peruvian is back. Tres Gran Vitesse is scheduled for a 15:00 express run, on time and blasting past all stations at infinite speed. The Swede is in form. The defence rested. The strikers can feel the presence of Sears and Zamora at their heels. No, this is not going to be a dull match. We are going to CRUSH them, decisively. COME ON YOU IRONS !!!!!!! (What say you, gentelmen [and ladies]? Will we not SMASH them?)

Howdy all from the other side of the world, this is my first post so i would like to add a few of my own comments, 1. I feel Europoean qualification shouldn't be our main concern this year, it is consolidating where we are.It was only a few years ago we were down fighting in the championship 2. We have a big squad, we don't need to buy players just to fix a gap or be a back up, from know on we just need a bit of eztra class and ability. 3 Neill can be a liability and i also feel that he plays he's best in the centre of defence, he hasn't the speed or attacking ability to be at right back. Maybe a back three is a option to use , just a idea love ready all the comments and as i am so far away this is were i get alot of my hammers info from cheers

Welcome H. o. OZ! There's more than a few fans on this site living in OZ (including me), and at least a couple from NZ. The kiwis are lucky, 'cause the typical match shows at midnight, not 2 in the ^^^^y morning, when we see them. But i'd burn the candle at both ends any day to see the Hammers play, and I sorely missed them last weekend, EVEN after the bitter disappointment of the last two matches!!! So there are ardent fans in OZ you can be sure of that. I agree with you that whatever else happens, WHUFC needs to build steadily and surely. But there are two things I disagree about. (1) I think while the opportunity remains, Hammers should push hard for Europe this season. It's still possible, even after dropping points in the last two matches. I think we should target at least 8th, regardless. (2) I think we might need new players in the summer. I'd like to see a top quality striker and a dangerous left winger join the team. To me that would be the most economical way to make a dramatic improvement. But of course, some of that depends on what you believe Deano and Bellamy might do next year. If they're both fit and firing, then maybe we don't need a striker. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Great to have you aboard OZ. COYI!!!!

Im from Oz too. Get my Hammers info from here and the official site. I occasionally get to watch them on Foxtel (Austar) when away in hotels for work. Pleased to see a few more positve comments on these pages since my first post. By the way I was thinking back to the 75 FA Cup final ... Was trying to remeber the team ... I was 10 .. I am 43 now. Can someone correct me. Day - Mcdouggal, Lampard, Locke Taylor, Bonds, Brooking, Paddon, Holland, A Taylor and Pop Robson (This is a very vague recollection .. Can anyone remeber who the sub was? And whatever happened to A Taylor. (Was it Alan) I remeber he hit a purple patch and was scoring left right and centre in that year. Sorry for the change of topic. Was just feeling a little nostalgic.

I to live in Oz and have just joined this site, and been a Hammer fan for over 50years, when I lived in the UK I followed them to every game even in to europe in the 70's. I was at the 75 final and the team was Mervyn Day, John McDowell,Frank Lampard, Billy Bonds, Tommy Taylor, Kevin Lock,Billy Jennings,Graham Paddon,Alan Taylor,Trevor Brooking, Keith Robson, Sub was Bobby Gould

Morning Adefinty, if my memory serves me right(same age) it was McDowell not Mcdouggal and think it was Billy Jennings instead of Pop Robson. I remember that Bobby Gould was on the bench as there was only 1 sub at the time and the main thing was that it was an all English team, always good for a quiz question.

Welcome hammer from OZ, it's always good to see a new name. I can't say I agree about Europe though. I think we should do everything we can to qualify. It will make a big financial difference plus the type of player we can attract will improve greatly if we are in Europe next season.

Afternoon barking, i would love nothing more to see the hammers in europe, if Bolton can make final 16 we surely could, but it also shows that we need consistency year in year out. I would hate to make it to Europe, get some top quality players in, and then they chase higher glory because we fail to reach europe the following year. I think in about 5 years we could consistly be in Europe and stay there but there is alot to achieve between now and then. I am not trying to be negative i just think we need to take baby steps. Hammers in Europe would be fanatastic Cheers From Down Under

Mornin' fella, welcome aboard. I don't post much myself but everynowanagain I have a rant. Your right about Euro qulaification, but it's so close, closer then it's been for ages so it's worth having a punt. We do have a big sqaud & it needs thinning as it seems we've got younger academy players showing promise but if we were to sign anyone they would have to be of serious quality - no more squad players req'd. Neill pees me off a lot but for some reason I'm still pleased that he's in the team except when he's clearly jetlagged. Upson & Ferdinand are on it at the mo and if anythin McCartney would join them if we went to a back 3. Well, that's my 2 pence worth anyway, I like your thinking cobber ;-p

Nev, since I'm bored with decorating during this game drought while the grown-ups have fun in Europe, I've teased some innuendo from this post and come up with a couple of irritating queries. If Thor Guddy really is '...ten times wealthier than...' Guddy Snr: 1. How come the young fella is so loaded compared to his dad? 2. Did Thor Guddy achieve such riches by being similarly '...shielded...' during the astonishing accomplishment of such wealth? (Which would beg the question) 3. Is Thor Guddy a bit delicate/'special' or - and this might smart a bit 4. Is the sheffield blades chairman, mcbabe, seriously likely to financially whoop our behinds that Guddy senior is going to be our fall-guy before the mega, mega-rich pup slides into the Chair? Just wondering ...and always 101% Irons loyal.

Your out of order MN. When you've contributed something to this site, you can start calling people liars. Ask the first question, fair enough but the rest of your post is out of line and you should apologise to someone who doesn't get paid for doing this and (I presume) does have a life outside of this website. I fail to understand why people on here seem to think that Nev should be on 24hour call?
Submitted by Mark Noble on 24 February, 2008 - 21:39.
He can´t know about those things. So he does and no one else ? No way ? How does he know Thor will take a more hands on role ? Or that Bjorgolfur is happy about with the clubs procurement policy ? And how could the Tevez affair affect Gudmundsson´s son ??
Submitted by Mark Noble on 22 February, 2008 - 21:28.
Out of order? So him not getting paid for this justifies his lies ? Or 24hour call? WTF are you talking about ? Why does that matter. The fact is he´s he´s making things up and stating them as facts. So you think that is OK because he doesn´t get paid or is not here on a 24hour call? And people wonder why his credibility is questioned?
Submitted by Denbighammer on 24 February, 2008 - 08:51.
I don't recall Nev 'justifying' what he had put as either fact or rumour to be fair. As for '24 hr call' - my point is why should someone be on here all the time and especially if he isn't paid for it? People expect regular p[ostings, even when freely admitting there is nothing going on! Why not act like a civilised person and politely ask whether the post contains opinion or fact before shooting your mouth off?

I haven't seen any comments on here about the reserves lately. They did well again yesterday with Z-man looking fitter than ever, he didn't score but played well. We won 2-0 with young Freddy Sears scoring again, 21 in 17 games now,(I think), he will surely get a slice of first team action before the season is over, he has a bit of everything to his game and a lot of pace. He could be a star for us if he can score at half that rate in the first team. We need to get players like him out on loan if we are not going to use them, at least give them the experience of playing competitive football every week and see how they fare. Collison is looking good too.
As for Deano, does anyone know a striker who hasn't had a drought? I think his attitude is more of a concern than his lack of goals, and probably connected too.
Faubert didn't play in the reserves so I am hoping that is an indication that he might start against Fulham. It's about time, surely.

So, Roy 'Look at my nice wavy hair' Hodgson's Fulham is up next. Hodgson likes the direct approach...physical. I reckon if we get the ball on the ground and play some football then we'll win this one ok. Boa-Morte is probably destined to score against his old chums so put him in the side somewhere...apart from that..whoever is fit will do. Solano if he's fit would be ideal playing in a central attacking role..the sort of role Berkovic used to play for us. He's got great skill and vision and quick feet..he always seems a step ahead.

Folks ... I read some crap on this site but it doesnt come from Nev. Whatever Nev has written it gets a response and when that happens its good writing. Agree or disagree it is a point of view .. Express your views, sure, but dont give poor Nev stick. Keep it up pal. I suspect that what has happened is that West Ham actually know that this year is not a European year and they have chosen to wait til summer to get rid of some of the dead wood and have money to buy real quality. Ive heard some extreme views of poor Deano. He is a great player and now seems to have become the scapegoat of all the fans frustrations. Give him some encouragement and maybe he will rise to the challenge. My bet is that in the summer he will be the first out the door. Not because of Curbs but because of the fickle nature of some of the fans. Not too long ago he was a god to rival Thor. Fickle fickle fickle. A loss and a draw against the bottom teams and suddenly the euphoria of the Liverpool win the Man U wins and several other outstanding results mean nothing. Fickle fickle fickle. I tell you Nev doesnt need to get his sh@t together but a few morons on this site do.
