At Last An England Manager Selects Green

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 23 March, 2008 - 23:15.
Fabio Capello has finally done what Steve Mc Claren criminally failed to do and has selected Robert Green for an England squad. Green's selection, albeit through injury to Chris Kirkland, is testimony to the West Ham stoppers continued superb form. Now those not wearing claret and blue tinted spectacles might raise an eye brow at the selection of a keeper who conceeded 12 goals in three games, thankfully the new England manager is not so short sighted. OK Robert Green will only be there to bench warm, but given David James ability to self destruct, he could find himself in the frame sooner rather than later. - Ed

Off - topic I know, but - I was absolutely elated to get tickets this morning for the Pompey match .... and then - how typical - those clint clints flipping bastard crap crappy klint clint clints flipping at London Underground have announced a 72 hour tube strike ! Unbelievable! As soon as I saw the article, I yelled out - "and I bet its over the date of the Pompey match" or a more graphic version of that! I will be going with all 4 of my kids, so it just underlines the crap that we Hammers Fans have to go thru! BUT - we will be there, by hook or by crook ! to support The Irons !!!!!! hoping for a decent result at Sunderland on the weekend as well ! Iron Man since 1974 - come on you IRONS !!!

Same Everywhere, WhuRya -- Only difference is WE don't have the 'ammers in Oz, so count yer lucky stars, mate. This past week the trains on my line were delayed 2.5 hours (Wed) and 1.5 hours (Fri) at PEAK hour; no replacement buses, nothing. On Wednesday, people on the platform were told, ::Just go home!" -- yeah, that's fine if you can GET home!!! So I share your pain, mate, but I wish I could go to a match. COYI!!!!!!!!! Let's beat Sunderland and sail on.

I don't think we will spend big in the summer. Remember, BG is a banker and banks are in global meltdown so he may not have the amount of money at his disposal he had twelve months ago. This no doubt will pass, but I would imagine belt-tightening could be the order of the day in the short term. It would explain why the new stadium might be shelved as he was going to be putting £250m of his own money into that. Whatever Eggy and the rest said at the time, I suspect it will be business as usual in the West Ham purse string department.

Green did not even make the subs bench. Ex-Hammer James was in goal, and gave away the penalty, but ex-Hammer Harry Redknapp still considers him to be the best keeper "by far" in England. Ohh Redknapp you are so melodramatic at times. For your information, I think that the penalty expert Green could probably have saved that penalty.

In current form David James is probably the best English Keeper at the moment, although I feel greeny should be given a chance James is still a good choice for England but he is not long term, he is far too old now. Also Green was on the bench we had two keepers on it, it was a friendly we had a huge subs bench. COYI

Villa's average gate this season is 36k, their ground capacity is 43,300 and they are seventh in the league with a respected manager from the Irish Republic. There isn't much else to add other than the majority of their supporters speak weirdly. I'd not bother myself as otherwise they are nationally anonymous.
Submitted by jumpjump on 28 March, 2008 - 14:45.
Think we are giving Villa very little credit. They to as much as us would believe they are still building for the future and hope full place in the top four. I think it is quite ignorant and disrespectful to just say they cant get much better and they are plain team who are at their best. I say this because i know how much it angers me when i hear newcastle and tottnham fans saying basically the same thing about us. At the end of the day you can never really gage what a team will achieve in the upcoming seasons. I for one wont boast my team is better than another until we have actually proven our selves. And to say they are nationally anonymous is a bit harsh, we aren't exactly global so lets not start bringing that up. Don't be too harsh with your replies i am only trying to be fair, as a supporter i feel great pride in West ham and confidence we can improve.

I'm gladly share a drink with anyone and acknowledge villa's (small 'v') right to kick a ball but I'm simply unable to sniff butt at any love-in because it's their business and not mine. It also detracts focus on our bloody fine club. You'll see that I did alude to their size (as joe originally asked) but don't care what they once did and suggest that they and ALL the other pretenders - barcodes and that other rabble too, can politely clear-off whilst I'll avoid anger by happily cheering-on the Irons in my sleep. Meanwhile, ask an elder which midlands city single handedly trashed the British motorbike industry? ...the gits ;)

Well said JJ. Villa are one of the oldest clubs in the League. They have won the First Division Championship seven times, the FA Cup seven times and are also one of only four English clubs to have won the European Cup. They are the fourth most successful club in English football history, having won 20 major honours. They might not have won anything in the last 25 years, but I suggest their pedigree is somewhat better than ours. I think a bit of respect is called for.
Submitted by asheshammer on 28 March, 2008 - 07:46.
Hilarious! I think Villa have peaked and I don't see them pushing on. I'm also hoping that they run out of steam for the last seven matches of this season! West Ham, on the other hand, are just coming into form. But realistically, it's too early to tell, who will reach CL first.

Do u think that Eggert and BG had the same idea's and ambitions for West ham? Its just that Lucas signed (he says) because of a list of players that we were apparently interested in buying.Ljungberg was questioned 2day about him leaving in the summer because of the huge wage bill we have and Ljungberg responded by saying he is not leaving and that When he signed 4 us he was told that we were gonna do a Chelsea and buy quality players. We've since been told by Scott Duxbury that we will be not spending heavily in the summer and that we were gonna give youth a chance. Now i dont know whether we had trouble buying these players and that we had 2 exagerate our ambitions 2 sign the players that we have, or that Eggert was the ambitious 1 in the partnership.Ive not seen BG at Wh thou he says he returns 4 every home game,im just concerned as BG hasnt stated what his ambitions are for West ham.Have we just got another Terence Brown at the helm at our club?CJ

Personally I'm glad that all the fanfare about West Ham spending big and 'do' a Chelski has died down a bit. Its a foolish way of doing business. Why go round shouting our mouths off about splashing the cash? All it achieves is that when we do make a move on a player his value shoots up beyond reason.Yes I want us to sign good quality players but dont want us held to ransom! COYI

I dont think we need a massive spending spree in the summer. we are much better than the middlesbroughs, boltons, readings, sunderlands and birminghams etc so we shouldnt go down particularly after we've flirted with relegation many times before. its refreshing that curbs is giving youth a chance and sears in particular will be very important to us next season. we were a different team in the second half when he came on and it showed that when all the injured players come back we will be fighting in that 4th hunt pack. this time next season, squads tend to decide if a team is good enough. when you look at teams like everton and villa there doesnt seem to be strength in depth compared to us and portsmouth. this season has showed that when we do have players missing, others can do a job. id be stupid to say we are going to finish 4th but we can certainly push for it next season.

There have been a lot of contributors here questionning Deano's commitment to the club. I for one think that we've got it the wrong way round, the Club should actually show commitment to him by offering him a new long term contract on money that is equivalent to the rest of the squad. The man had a terrible injury & it is only in recent weeks that he has stopped running with a limp & seems able to jump for the ball off either leg, he is getting quicker & sharper each week & I'm convinced will be the next England centre forward. The only other contender as genuine target man is Peter Crouch & Deano is different class to him. Next season we will see the true Deano back & we would be making a massive mistake if he gets itchy feet because he doesn't get the resassurance he wants. Views ?

Clare its not that we don't want to spend big, they would if they could, but with the financial markets as up and down as they are at the moment it is a big risk to be moving money around from the assets you hold. Until the markets stabalise I can't see BG spending big, he is a good buisnessman with a lot of money, it is too much of a risk to start removing that from his assets. When he became Chairman of the club he put 25 million straight into the club to pay off debt so there are no issues with him spending money. I however don't want to do a Chelsea, spend big to win, it would ruin everything our club is about and our history, we are known for our young talent and they have always been big figures at the club, apart from under the reign of TB. We will be a big club under BG but it isn't going to happen after 1 / 2 seasons and I wouldn't want it to. COYI

Although u seem to know what BG is thinking so can you look into your crystal ball and see when we are gonna win the Champions Leauge so I can book my tickets..Cheer up JJ the future is bright with claret and blue shades COYI

I sed 'to me it looks like'. Read the comment, from my own observations i fell he isn't as interested as Eggy. From Eggy we had a constant apperances at each game, regular updates from the official website concerning his comments and views. Varies reports i read stated in a number of ways his intrest in the transfer market and the players he, as well as curbs spoke with. BG iv seen at a very few games, theres very little sed by the man concerning the future of the club. I am not saying a word about him coming in and buying out the league but it looks obvious the finances are going to be tided up now and less cash will be awarded to Curbs.

No disrespect JJ but for once i do agree with you - for his own reasons he hasn't exactly come forward to state his intentions and i for one would rather hear it 'from the horses mouth' so to speak. It could be for one of two reasons - Eggy did tend to be a lot more media friendly and was quite adamant in public about what HIS plans for West Ham were therefore 1) BG might be keeping quiet on the basis that he still backs those plans and doesn't need to say any more, or 2) that he doesn't follow Eggy's line of thinking and doesn't want to publicly dispute it knowing it could put him out of sorts with the fans. There are several things that concern me and these are 1) the longer rumours circulate without confirmation or dispute, the worse a situation becomes; 2) the nature in which Eggy left makes me think that he and BG didn't see eye to eye on certain aspects. Things would be much clearer for the future if BG did at least come out and say what HIS plans for West Ham are that's for sure but taking into account the fact that he is really playing the part of what a club chairman used to be like i.e. sitting i the background and saying nothing, what would we prefer - an Alan Sugar type character who relishes every opportunity to put himself in front of a camera to massage his own ego, or someone who sits in the background letting the people he pays to do the job? Somewhere in the middle would do nicely but i haven't seen one yet?

The future IS Claret and Blue. That's not a mere hope, it's a clear hope. Look right now at the set of Ashton, Upson, Green, Noble, Sears, Tomka and Collison, and that's SEVEN England internationals-in-waiting. I can envision them all playing together for England AND West Ham one day. And the trio of Tomkins, Noble, Sears -- Defender, Midfielder, Striker -- has all KINDS of possibilities in it. Obviously they all still have much to learn, but we've got the experienced players at West Ham now to show them all the tricks. Noble, who is already talented at free kicks, could learn the guile and set-piece skills of Solano, Sears could learn from Ashton and Bellamy (not to mention Freddie Senior!), and Tomka can learn from Upson and Ferdinand. The thing that's changed is that at LAST we have a prospect of holding on to some talent -- if you KNEW you'd get first team experience while playing for a side that was challenging for the top four (as we WILL), wouldn't YOU stay in London with West Ham??? It's a no brainer.

I think Nani has been employed to generally look for YOUNG foreign talent that our academy can work with and bring on alongside the likes of Sears and Tompkins so eventually we will have both foreign and english kids filling the team with the likes of tomkins and sears competing to be the next kid to step up with the next young "fabregas" that way it doesnt hold our youth from breaking through to much keeps the team young and employs the continetal market. Top players already developed wont come to Upton park yet but youngsters on the verge of being top players probably will!!

Money ! The only one star player raised from the accademy that stayed,TrevorBrooking. I was looking back at the 1972/73 records earlier and 12 of the 18 players that played first team football that season was raised through the accademy West Ham are known throughout the world for the accademy, I just hope that the introduction of Nani doesn't ruin it

The difference from having players like Cole, Lampard etc. is the bosses. Back then our Chairman was the moneygrabbing Satan himself Terrence Brown, who didn't love the club like we should he justloved using his wallet as a high chair. The Icelanders want to take us forward and I think bringing Nani in will prove to be a great step in keeping our younger players, he can act as the middle man between Tony Carr and Alan Curbishly, bring our young talent through the ranks! Fear not, West Ham are on the up. COYI
Submitted by duncanio on 26 March, 2008 - 14:37.
Its not money or their greed necessarily. Carrick, Cole,Defoe & Johnson went because we were being relegated, they were sold because we were low on cash, if we had stayed in the prem then so would they, they are all young players and want success , professional success not necessarily money. Carrick and Cole at least have made their moves worthwhile by achieving some success at their new clubs. Ferdinand was sold because THE CLUB could get 17 million for him at a time when 17 million was a shed load of money for a player. Lampard went because the club treated his Uncle ( & maybe his father) badly. West ham have not achieved much in the last 20 years and when those players left things showed no signs of improving to the extent where the would achieve any level of success despite their obvious talent. Things were very different in Brooking's days (my favourite player). I think Nani will prove to be an asset.
Submitted by Barking Mad Steve on 26 March, 2008 - 13:40.
Old Iron. I am like most Hammers and love seeing our youth players develop in the Academy, join our first team and go on to become England Internationals. We have all been frustrated with the previous owners for cashing in on our best players, especially the likes of Joe Cole (who I think has been Englands best players for the last 2 or 3 years). As far as Brooking being the only one to stay at West Ham, I think you should include both Geoff Hurst and the Great (Barking boy) Bobby Moore, alongside Trevor. I know they both left the Hammers but, it was almost at the end of their careers. Both only played for another couple of years after they left us, so we had the best of them. They could have gone wherever they wanted. As for today and the future, I believe Nani is an asset for us. He is, mostly, well known for identifying young players who have promise. Although a part of his brief is to recruit world class players to the club, we also have asked him to help develop our Academy and spot potential stars of the future, both English and foreign. The future of the Premiership and English football is definitely tinted with the Claret & Blue of West Ham.

Call me suspicious and cynical, but I believe Dean Ashton has been told that he can leave the club in the summer if the money is right. Ashton has found form all of a sudden (for which we can all be pleased, especially if he is scoring goals like the one at Everton) and I think it is very much to do with wanting to attract the attention of a so called bigger club. I hope this does not turn out to be the truth of the matter.

Hammerton, I don't follow your logic of playing better with a move in mind. Obviously every footballer wants to play at the highest level, and clearly Deano has that ability. I think it is a question of fitness and confidence. Apart from improving both of these aspects, my theory is that he has upped his game now that Freddie Sears is sniffing around. Would you like to lose your shirt to an eighteen year old hotshot? This is good for the club, as one key thing that has been lacking this season is competion for places. For lots of games this season, the side has almost picket itself due to our injury situation. It will be good to see how this pans out as key players return to fitness, although with only seven games left we may well have to wait until next season. All in all, I know people knock Curbs, but this time last year I was sh1tting myself thinking we were going down. Currently, I am enjoying look smugly at the relegation dog fight and thinking what might be next season with P.L safety intact. Rome wasn't built in a day! COYI.....

Hammerthon, I believe you have nothing to worry about, Ashton has looked a little sloppy all season but has been ever improving with performances, he was always good with Booby Z and seems to be excellent with Sears, and I think he will be perfect with Bellamy, but he is not a lone striker nor can he play with Boa Morte or Carlton Cole. His recent form is therefore not because of the prospect of leaving but due to ever improving fitness and playing with the right team. In my eyes no need to worry, enjoy his current form and hope and cheer for more of the same! COYI

I'm excited too, but we'd have to have an AMAZING finish to end up 6th. As I said in another post, we have to win six of the last seven (possible, but nothing can go wrong!), AND need a mediocre finish from Villa and Pompey. Even then, we could end up level with Villa on 62 and be seventh on goal difference. Long, long ago I predicted 7th for West Ham, and I thought that was optimistic. Realistically we could still pass City and Blackburn, both of whom seem to be fading. But it's going to take another miracle to finish sixth. Anyway, I hope we do it!!!
