I think we should play
I think we should play Tompka. Win or lose the battle with thier forwards it in valuable experience for him. We have two place to play for as our season has gone as expected, Mid table safety. Its all about next season now and im looking forward to the hopeful changes. The big question is Curbs the man to take us further ? Names being linked look promising. Luca Toni, Stephen Appiah, Achille Emana, Marco Zambelli, Giles Barnes, Nickey Shorey, Steve Sidwell, Valon Behrami, Albert Adomah, Ahmed Abdulla, Mauro Zarate. There is a lot of dead wood and a lot of players who can be replaced with these names. Will the transfers come through or will we settle for another crocked player in Stephen Carr !

Morning...Was at the game on Saturday and apart from the boos we had a great day...Didnt think we as bad as people made out and attacked like the old west ham...need a bit more fine tuning and hopefully we will be fine...the boleyn was good crack b4 the match and we ended up in the hammer for the night..good laugh...team for me sat wud be..green ..neill(although he looked more comfortable in the middle last sat) .. upson tomkins macca..freddie parker noble faubert..ashton zamora...sears makes more of an impact off the bench and struggled against derby....just needs more time and confidence...use nobby/sears if needed ..Hope we can get all 3 points and get the feelgood factor back in the ground...COYI...
Owen would pull Tompkins all over the place and Viduka would be too strong for him as well.Remember what Yakubu did to him.
Tompkins is one for the future but not ready to face this class of striker yet.
The full back must be Neill and McCartney as Paintsil cannot defend. It was hilarious watching him against derby, you never knew quite what he was going to do next.
Up front Ashton must start partnered by one of three, maybe Sears but I suspect it will be Zamora.
Newcastle are strong up front but weak in defence so we should score a few on Saturday.
Its really good to see the attitude has changed on the site over the past week, as we won the normal pesemistics aren't around which is great! I think we can walk away with all three point if we are solid at the back, Newcastle just try to score more goals than the opposition and it won't happen against us. The question on a lot of lips, is Tomka up for the job against Owen, Martins and Viduka? Lets give him a go and find out, when ever he has played he has shown outstanding maturity and if it shows early on he isn't up to the job get Anton on quick. My starting 11 would go, Green, Paintsil, Macca, Tomka, Upson, Ljunberg, Parker, Noble, Faubert, Ashton, Sears, with nobby z-man and anton on the ready at all times. Lets hope for a happy hammer weekend and lets cheer not boo. COYI
why bother playin mullins with noble and parker?? this is too defensive minded if u ask me.wer not playin the arse, wer playin newcastle for gods sake. also,i dont think sears shud b dropped.wat wud that do for his confidence? one more thing,if upson and anton are both fit,id play upson alongside tomkins who was probably man of the match against derby. is it just me or does anyone else feel that the atmosphere will be bit better on saturday? by th way, heard a rumour di canio will be in bobby moore stand!!
Indeed .. Mullins is a plodder, grafter with no flair. Leave him on the bench to come on when the game needs to be saved. And No Pantsil? the guy has to stay. Drop Macca .. Put lucas on the left .. he can at least distribute the ball even if he is not in great form .. keep Tomka in the middle with Upson. Tomka is a class act and is never flustered .. Not sure I can say the same about Ferdinand though I do like him. He gets some unfair flack.
So for me it's Green, Pantsil, Upson, Tomka, Neil ... Lundgberg, Noble, Parker, Faubert, Sears, Ashton - bench Zamora, Mullins, Ferdinand Walker.
Because we are playing against Owen,Viduka and Martins so Tompkins isn't experienced enough for that trio.
Its got to be Ferdinand and Upson in the middle, maybe even all three.
bang on..green pants upson tomk neill lyungberg noble parker faubert ashton and freddy. its funny coz out of the injured players, who wud u replace? bellamy for sears and dyer for faubert maybe?? squads lookin good,im feelin good. its all become clear this week.ironically i think the reaction to the derby game has made it all clear to me. curbs is the man for the job and i think most fans wil soon realise this. come on u irons!! im 4eva blowin bubbles pretty buubles in d air they fly so high they reach the sky n like my dreams they fade and die fortunes always hiding i look everywher im 4eva blowin bubbles pretty bubbles in d air!! united united!! west ham til i die oh west ham til i die!!!!!
Ferdinand should be fit for Saturday so i think the team will be Green Neill Ferdinand Upson McCartney Noble Parker Mullins and Ljuneberg Zamora and Ashton subs: solano sears tompkins Walker and Cole.
I fancy a good win and I will go for 3-1 to the mighty Irons
We are capable of winning this game about 3-1 if we took our chances but the reality is, more like a 1-1 draw or 2-1 either way depending who gets the rub of the green.
What do people think will be the score on Saturday and how do you think should be the line up and formation. I think it will be a attacking type of Keegan game. Defence will have to be on top form. Hope they give Tomkins and if fit Upson a go at the back. Entertaining few games to finish of the season Newcastle, Manure and Villa. Present form means Green could be a very busy man?
if we can get some passing going and a bit of team work and link up play in the final third their is no reason we cant win but a performance like the one at Darby i think will see us lose by a fair amount.
Babbs, due to your chimp-like insults dished-out below let me 'help' by challenging your slightly gay submission. Our performance '...at Derby...' got us a 5 goal-fest. Stick with the paper-round, mate...
3-1 to NEWCASTLE ,OWEN hat-trick.Apart from UPSON back for TOMPKINS all our best players are either injured or not fully fit,so don't expect too much.I hope I'm wrong.
Further to debate below with A Hammer: OK A Hammer point(s) taken in a well written piece. Most sentient West Ham fans would find it hard to believe the boo-boys are high. I have no proof that the boo-boys aren't taking cannabis, but if we commissioned a straw poll outside the ground before a match I reckon most if not all of the so-called boo-boys will have had a few beers rather than a smoke. If anything a few spliffs would make any angry fans more relaxed and laid back! They ain't gonna give a fvck about the performance or incompetence of our [currently] mediocre team. However it must be pointed out that for the record I don't agree with the boo-boys but it is their right to boo if they want to. Have you ever heckled a comedian on stage? Have you ever not voted? Ever wanted to throw an rotten egg at Gordon Brown? Cause you fvcking have! Now: we need to get behind the Irons on Saturday. We have absolutely nothing to lose. Remember this time last year? Even though we knew we would be relegated had we lost...how much fun was it going up to Wigan, we turned it into a home game (I know it's not difficult!) and I'm sure it helped. Let's do the same on Saturday.
Lorne ...it's not the blissful state of a smoke that has been id'd as a problem but the long-term, life-long mental effect that exposes snags, but yeah ...I'd be well happy to see the chirpy-chappy Keegan return up the A1 without a point
Ticket holders, sky subscribers and newspaper browsers alike, only qualify as being a west ham from whats inside. If you live and die by the hammers, it doesnt matter if you turn up at the boleyn or if you bang your head against the dashboard of your motor listening to a sh!tty MW Radio transmission with ear screeching feedback. The fact is noone has to justify their love for the team, nor do they need to question others. Why be on this site if you dont support the club with passion? The facts are simple, West Ham are a mid table club and have been for a long time. We have had some great years with FA Cup wins, European action and a chase for the title with McAvennie and Cottee. But now we have a chance to contend at a higher rank and its only a year after almost being face to face with the likes of Norwich and West Brom this season. Curbs may not be number one for charisma but he IS a top manager with a track record of playing solid counter attacking football. I wont mention him being considered for the England post as that means jack sh!t with the choice of managers for our country over the years. I understand some of us may write a post when we've had a bad day, misunderstood another post or just feel so frustrated that this is the only outlet which will respond. But in reality, on paper or however you want to term it.. West Ham is doing ok. We are not a champions league side and wont be without a good few years of building our youth or an immediate injection of 100M for transfers. Look at the Magpies.. Kevin Keegan turns up and the Geordies think he's gonna contend for the prem title. Im not saying we should stop moaning or stop hoping for champions league status, but lets just smell the coffee and most of all.. stick together. We support the finest club in the world.
I prefer the £100 MILLION injection then the other option,BOLEYN, as we will be waiting forever otherwise.I think though it is not wishful thinking that we can become a CHAMPIONS LEAGUE regular in 4 years. We have an ambitious board in place, the question is do we have the right man in place in the hot-seat?Your right concerning CURB'S counter-attacking style of football, he is an advocate of that, which I am not knocking. To see it in full flow with the likes of MAN UTD, is great to watch. It's whether CURB'S has the ability to assemble a team to pull it off successfully.
I would love to go to the match every game, travel all over the country to see them if I could, but when you've got a 3 year old and a newborn baby and you haven't seen them all week and played no part in helping out the Mrs, family comes first. I have no problem paying out the cash even though I can't afford it, doesn't make me any less a real fan than those that go week in week out. And I'll happily slag off the boo boys no matter how much money they pay, if they're allowed to slag off the manager and the team, then I'll slag off the ticket holders. When my kids are old enough I hope to become a family season ticket holder in our new 50/60? thousand seater, but I'll never teach my kids to boo. Been a true West Ham fan for 40 years, even though my Dad was an Arsenal fan the best thing he ever did for me was let me choose my own team, as much as it helped to divide us, the FA Cup 1980 was a double special event for me in our house. But I hate the way season ticket holders call themselves real fans over the kids and the broke that can't afford a single match let alone a season ticket, don't rub salt into the wound that's all I'm saying. Heart and soul, claret and blue, through and through.
People should understand it takes time to build a team. How many of that team have ever played together before. This is the season of getting the players to know each other. Injuries have been a problem for us this season. But curbishley cant use this as an excuse. It is his fault he is the manager. He gave jobs to the fitness management team and they are in charge of the training so yes it is his fault. This is proof of an amateur he is. The line of work im studying at college is how to train individuals. From what i have learned the players must be overtrained too much and they must not get enough rest after a performance because if you are trained by the best you wont get consistant similar injuries and thats a fact
Boo Boys? Well i was at the game as i have been for all the home games this season unlike some of the people slaging off the crowd on saturday. There were a few Boos but i have heard a lot worse at home games before under several managers. And no i did not boo as i am not that sort of fan. Yes some fans made themselves look stupid for chanting at curbs about taking seers off and then cole coming on and scoring. But most fans were already asleep by then. Look the real fans turn up every week to support the team and on the whole are great but you cant help some fans being a bit silly and also a bit pissed off by the standard of football played this season. Lets stop slaging the season ticket holders off please! If you want to come and support the team then get your cash out and come to the games!!!
While the authenticity of the information is probably dubious, I note that West ham have been linked with Toulouse midfield playmaker Achille Emana and Deportivo La Coruna forward Francisco Tejeda. Further to previous comments I have made on this site, West Ham have much to offer young players who want first team football in what is arguably the strongest league on the planet. Far better for us to be in negotiations with these younger players with plenty of potential than established players who command large fees and wages.
Closer to home, I was impressed again with Tomkins at the weekend (the lack of quality in that game notwithstanding). I don't recall a time when our stocks in the centre of defence were quite as high. Don't be surprised to find that the club sells off a few of them to reduce the wages bill and perhaps make funds available to strengthen other positions. As for talk about Ljunberg going or staying, I would like to express my total disappointment in the player since he arrived on a lifeline from Arsenal. Officially, the club is saying that he is important to our immediate future and for our European aspirations. I wonder what they will be saying unofficially to prospective employers from the Championship or Scottish Premier League.
Hammerthon, you make a lot of good points. I agree with you about looking for some of the good young talent from Europe. Hopefully that will be the sort of thing Gianluca Nani is good for. But I don't see why you're so down on Freddie Ljungberg. Yes, he is probably costing more than he is worth (isn't everybody?). But if he wasn't MOTM against Derby, then who was? He made the winning goal, and was well in position to score when brought down by Savage. In many matches he's played a significant role and I think he's settling in at West Ham. He does have Champions League experience, and I think that will be very useful for those youngsters that we sign or bring through the Academy.
I second that Ashes. I think Ljungberg is one of our more creative and attacking players. He didn't have a great start to the season but has picked his game up since he changed his training and diet program. I can't help thinking he might be using the same regime that Upson has found so successful. Ljungberg was last months player of the month as voted by the fans on the OS. It seems he is more popular than many on this site would believe.
I think he'll come good as the team settles. I'd like to see the boy stay, on his day he's quality, plus he's got a lot to offer our youngsters. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11685_3444545,00.html Despite the treatment from the fans!
some people in ere seem to think freddy sears was booed off on saturday?? it wasn't boa morte who came on for him. it was CARLTON COLE...and it wasnt freddy they were booing. it was the fact that curbs thought cole wud b more likely to be a threat as freddy was getting tired.. and what happenned after that everybody? yes thats right.COLE SCORED. i havent heard one person come on here and say fair play to curbs for a great substitution. fair enough the man has had some funny tactical changes over the course of the season but he never gets credit when things go right. curbs knows what hes doing so give him a chance and please please just get behind him on saturday. man i would love if we gave the same reception to curbs on sat as we all did for pardew before the blackburn home last season. anybody recall? an emotional day that was.
Exactly Right. In truth, it was a great substitution. The right person at the right time. It was only a couple of minutes before Cole scored. Those people who said, "You don't know what you're doing" to Curbs should take a long hard look at themselves now. Cole added height, strength, and freshness to the attack. Freddie Sears is going to be great, but he was getting muscled out and the substitution changed that. I probably wouldn't have had the guts to make that substitution; turns out to be a good thing Curbs did.
Joe, no-one should boo West Ham ...ever. Do you really reckon that the nuance and subtlety of that tepid argument was agreed as one on Saturday when the boo-boys pursed their out-of-control lips and all subjected all us true supporters to their selfish tantrum as one? No way! I'll stick my neck out here by suggesting that they are a majority bunch of cannabis, etc, users who prove to the rest of us that the muck is insideously spreading a schizophrenic message of confused sadness within a previously normal & unified fan-base. I'd be pleased to see contrary (& non-offensive) debate from booing, non-substance abusers... I don't touch the stuff but know 100% that recreational blow, tabs, smack, etc all suck & spread rot amongst previously rational people..and that use of the stuff perfectly illustrates a sadness in coping when, ie, Curb's isn't fondling their egos. Real supporters never boo.
Dear A Hammer. Re your above comment. Are you anti-drugs by any chance? I don't think any of the boo-boys are smoking dope! They are more likely p1ssed up on lager from the Boleyn or the Queens. Drugs have nothing to do with it! Anyway if real working class (or non working class) Hammers fans want to come and vent their aggression after a week of drudgery at work then fair enough. Work all week and you wanna take it out on someone, it's a relief valve. If you pay good money to see West Ham you want to be at least entertained for some of the 90 minutes. Forget the score. West Ham have always entertained; until recently. Entertaining and sometimes successful. But lately we have not been exciting to watch and losing. I'd rather be the way we were...3-4's, 3-3's, 4-2's etc etc. If people come to the Park having paid good money and the team plays crap then they have every right to be angry and make a noise. The players should be big enough to take it on the chin and so should Curbs. At the end of the season when we finish 10th and everyone looks at the top half of the table and we are included it won't seem such a bad season, finishing above Spuds...let's hope we can get all our boys fit for next season and invest in the Academy, and retain all the youngsters rather than letting them go to west London, Manchester or Scouseland etc. PS have you read Gonzo or Fear and Loathing, I'm sure you'd love Hunter Thompson.
Thanks Lorne, and no I haven't read Hunter Thompson but I am anti-drugs. In response, just as '...West Ham have always entertained...' then WH support has never slagged the club & actively denied/wrecked support by booing as vociferously and with such flimsily excused 'provocation' as now - whilst no-one is solidly & wholeheartedly sure why they booed as a collective. However, I suggest frustration was the reason - but grown-ups should better cope with it whilst my prime concern is that we will gift the bar-codes with an extra man on their visit before blaming anyone but us on the terrace! '...Drugs have nothing to do with it? Where's that evidence from? We are seeing fickle 'support' behaviour that typically mimics long-term cannabis use behaviour from those under stressful circumstances manifesting as schizophrenia, such as loving the club one season and booing it the next. Your claim of 'drugs have nothing to do with it' cannot thus be thrown in so nonchalently. Meanwhile, if as suggested, it is beer talking then it demonstrates that some 'supporters' are too juvenile at coping if the pints are too much for him & his gob runs off in giving otherwise constipated yet random abuse of OUR team at OUR ground (& thus gifting the opposition). As far as '...good money...' goes, well all money is money, good or otherwise. If you're condoning getting pissed-up as a pre-requisite before being 'mugged' of it then see above but at least support by not slagging/booing. Or, save the money & stay-away from publicly encouraging the opposition for the world & its media to revel in ...but the point of drug use amongst poor/frustrated terrace behaviour at least deserves consideration because I've never seen it here before and it's with & amongst us now.
Hey Joe, I know there are 148 comments to read, well, 149 now, and some lengthy ones, mine included but there are some of us that have mentioned the great substitution of CC by AC. But that aside, I'm in total agreement with you.
I really don't get the fans on this site that agree with the booing. Yes they pay a lot of money to see the Hammers week in week out, but that still doesn't make it right to do what they did IMO. There was an awful time when fans felt they had the same right to throw bananas at black players, the few times I thank God for the invention of CCTV for preventing such disgusting behaviour. I'm not making a comparison I'm just making the point that some fans believe they friggin own the club to the point where they will call for blood the second, literally the second things don't go our way. I think these same booing fans are unrealistic, ungrateful, impatient, bullish and childish. And when other fans on this site say that these booing fans are allowed to voice their opinion, to them I say, well of course they are, I wish they didn't but if they can critcize Curbs and the players so aggressively then they must accept that others will critize them with that same force.
However, after saying all this, I'd prefer there was unity amongst us, and I've called it for many times, we shouldn't turn against one another because it really is splitting the fans in two, it's like a bloomin reflection of world problems on this site or something, brother pitted against brother. These extreme members that boo and those extreme members that hate the boo boys should extend brotherly hands and reach some compromise, for the good of the club.
A CLARET and BLUE army, THROUGH and THROUGH, all for one and one for all, and all that other rallying stuff. COYI!!!!
Thanks Joe. I made the reference to LBM instead of Cole, sorry for that. Most of us know that the boos were directed at Curbs but the fact is, they were booing while Sears was walking off, I'm sure you agree Freddy would have felt that personally and, more so than any other player.
u reckon? i think that freddy knows the fans love him to bits and that he didnt do much wrong. he actually looked dangerous when on the ball but curbs just thought a change was needed. i wouldnt be too worried bout fred's confidence.id say hes alright. its the whole scenario that im quite curious about. i see tyrone mears has come out and said that for all the money we've spent that we should be top 5. i suppose hes got a point but bearin in mind most of that money was spent on upson, bellamy, dyer, faubert, parker - all who have had long term injuries since arriving. u cud argue upson, dyer and parker have always had injury problems but faubert and bellamy was just unfortunate. to be honest mate our current predicament is wreckin my head. one minute im against curbs, the next im with him. its a fu###n tricky one. all we can do is give him til next season and if performances are still shite and even worse - if our injuries persist, i think then its time to sack him but for now we gota just stand by him. booing our own team doesnt help anyone. funny, the team that we field on sat should be a strong one - green,neill,tomkins,upson,mac,lyungberg,faubert,parker,noble,ashton,sears...mind u id prefer pantsil to mac with neill switchin to left back. think its worth a shot. anyone goin to the game shud back curbs and the boys. its the ideal game to get a result. keegans boys are flyin at mo,if they win they close gap to 2 points so lets not let that happen. lets assure our 10th place finish and go to old trafford with nothin to lose eh?? hav a funny feelin wer gona beat dem for the 4th time in a row. strange bein a west ham fan isnt it?
Watching Inside Sport on BBC tonight. Anybodt see the interview with David Sullivan, Birmingham chairman. It was loosely based around the football corruption investigation, but also about his lifestyle, house, family etc etc. On several occasions he mentioned foreign owners in football only being in it for the money. He suggested Chelsea, if they lose the backing of Abramovivh would find themselves in an impossibly unsustainable situation. He went on to say that West Ham find themselves in this exact situation, where foreign owners have taken over and realised that big money transfers/big money wages is totally unsustainable, and that big name players will be shipped out during the summer. This we know, it has been well documented with the departure off Magnusson. However, the reporter kept pushing the notion of WestHam being in such a precarious situation, and that The Boleyn is a lot closer to his Epping home than St Andrews (200mile round trip each home game). Sullivan went on to say that if West Ham owners were looking to sell, he would look into the oppurtunity of buying. He wasnt coi about the fact he has been @ Birmingham 15years, and that pastures new would be an exciting prospect. His £600million fortune certainly isnt to be sniffed at.
Thoughts/feelings?
Vistors to UP will be chuffed to monkeys knowing that we play with only ten men from the first whistle. The boo boys are worth a straight red against us with 90 minutes plus stoppage on the clock ...Great! Fortress Boleyn? It's more a gift-shop for grabs with fantasy-heads gifting points, morale and years of loyal integrity to strangers. I am disgusted with you and if you wanna beat my lights out - come-on!
Nigel, Sorry? Surprised that you give a stuff to aplogise and miss booing practise in preparation to abuse Saturday's squad from MY club at MY ground ha/Zzzz. You crack-on and be Newcastle's twelfth man, mate.
fukin post of the season for me Nige, i absolutely laughed my ass off after that comment been dying to say the same thing for so so long. Well done lets give Nige a round of applause for that one.
A Hammer All I got off the Geordies up here this morning was not about the match but how we had booed the team off the pitch. I was totally embarrassed and as you can imagine they are more than confident of getting a result on Saturday. I have always been proud of how our support gets behind the team home and away but at present the home crowd certainly isn’t the 12th man. As someone who was at Villa Park when we got beat 4-0 in a semi final but still sung throughout and we were even applauded by the late Brain Clough I find some of the current support so fickle.
Agreed, Aycliffe ...the Derby boys get my 100% admiration for their utter sportsmanship while many WH 'fellow-fans' aren't fit to tend stools at a crap-farm ...how very dare they.
The more I see of Alan Curbishley, the more I wonder about whether he was the right choice. On balance I think he is the best man for the job at the moment, and the main reason for saying that is because, right at this moment, I cannot remember if he has ever been able to call up the same starting eleven for consecutive matches. Has he? I might be wrong, but each teamsheet is not a photocopy of the last. Playing his best players all at the same time must be Fantasy Football. Let's see him get a chance to play his best players, for a few weeks, and then I will make my mind up.
BMS - i agree with you in some aspects , i have only seen brief highlights of the game as i have been away on business but from what i saw we still looked poor and derby appeared to have the better chances , and all the papers tend to agree with the fans although Cole got the winner we were desperately lucky , lacked ideas and were unconvincing......That is not the west ham i know nor the west ham i want to know!!! .....Its true some fans don't LIKE curbishley, i happen to be one of them but on the other hand i am also a realist , to be 10th given injuries etc isn't too shabby but its FRUSTRATING (the same word curbs used) because we should have won so many more games, i read we have won 16 points form 17 games is an UTTTER DISGRACE whether you are DERBY or WEST HAM , there is no hiding that stat .... I dislike Curbishley and everything he stands for , BUT i air my frustrations because i care about the club and can see SO much potential that this inlovewithmediocrityman is not getting out of the players for the benefit of the club and us loyal fans who churn out £800 a year for a season ticket to watch that man for the past 6 months go "injuries blah blah injuries blah blah realism blah blah injuries"
All season we have heard complaints about the STYLE of play. One up front, long ball, too defensive, etc etc. Saturday, we played the West Ham way, when the ball went forward, our front-men and midfield were racing forward attacking Derby and getting between 3 and 5 players into the 18yrd area. That is what West Ham are about, it leaves us open to counter attacks, that's the West Ham we all know. We have been set out to play attacking football for the last few weeks. At Bolton we had 4 yes FOUR strikers on the pitch at the same time. Who would have believed that last October? It's pretty obvious some fans don't like nor want Curbishley here, that's up to them but, when the booing is unfair then be ready for criticism from your fellow fans. When we heard, "you don't know what you're doing" that chant was right, it should have been aimed at the boo boys,
BMS you are dead right, I can hardly believe fans chanting like that at their own, booing players on and booing players off, what f*cking response do they think they'll get, it wont be a positive one thats for sure. So glad Cole scored!
A question for everyone. If we played like that against Manure, Chelski, Liverpoo or Arsewhipes and got exactly the same result, would the crowd still have booed? My answer NO! I think it is a disgusting that the fans booed, especially as everyone has been calling for the youngsters to get game, the play and then some c*nts boo them off the pitch, if he come out Saturday and take a bashing because everyones head is low, you've got yourselves to blame!
