Where To Now For West Ham

Submitted by Neville Nixon on 23 April, 2008 - 12:41.
With three games remaining how will West Ham's season pan out? Maintaining tenth spot ahead of Tottenham is the only achievable aim for a team brimming with talent, problem is of course that most of it has either made a brief cameo appearance before disappearing off into the injury ether or have struggled for form. So on the face of it this has been a poor season, but mid table safety was part of the three year plan wasn't it? The problem with such a plan is that half way through the glass is either half full or half empty, and to many Hammers fans and also the Chairman, the glass is most definitely half empty! Hammer's wage bill is phenomenal, when the interim trading figures are available in September there will be no disguising the fact that survival in the Premiership has come at a very high cost indeed, but the unsettling factor is that the team has been forced to play a 'percentage' game, all this is a far cry from the days of intricate football with nippy wingers rampaging down the flank pinging crosses in........................Injuries, Injuries and yet more injuries, an excuse? bad luck? or perhaps a little bit of bad planning. The fact is that Eggert Magnusson spent massively, some would say irresponsibly, in order to keep West Ham in the Premiership, but only two of the big signings actually did anything. The situation was compounded by the arrival of Freddie Ljungberg, it is not that he cannot play, but his disproportionate wages were always eventually going to have a effect sooner or later, it is quite obvious that the current chairman was appalled to find out how much dear old 'Eggy' had committed the club to pay out in wages........... Don't expect many big summer signings but do expect a few departures, that is if any club is willing and foolish enough to match the players ludicrous salaries. The future is still, as it has always been, in the academy, come on Curbs and BG and 'Nanny' come to think of it, invest in the future and not in the past! Sears, Tomkins and Collison represent the now and not the yesterday. - Ed

Call me ignorant or stupid but i could never see the sense in all the grief some of the people on here give Frank Lampard - to me he did nothing but give his all in a West Ham shirt while he was playing for us; he was an excellent servant to the club. I don't blame him for leaving on the basis of the way his father and uncle were treated by TB; in truth i wish he was still wearing the C&B!! It is great to see so many Hammers fans sending their condolences for his and the family's loss, as do i - our thoughts are with you at this time...

Agree with you, KP. I suspect that a problem exists whereby some people are not strong enough to forgive/forget: There is shed-loads of kudos in coming out with 'I'll never forgive him' or 'what he did was unforgivable' - not least because it's easy but also helps pillocks keep up with other small people. If we use that kind of language for a sportsman, what do we reserve for Peter Sutcliffe? (However, I have better memories of Frank snr - & Frank jnr can be a Muppet).

Spot on KingPaulo.....Too many fickle fans out there that cannot accept players moving on for whatever reason....Frank played some great games and scored some great goals for us and that to me is worth respect....my brother and son are chelski fans and i brought my son to the boro/chelsea game...my brother got upstairs and met frank...he told him i was there and was a hammer and he said he had great memories of west ham ...that says it all... You're right - we did; it's just a shame that most of it seemed to end up in TB's pocket (allegedly - just to cover my arse). With a lot of these players who do move on, unless they have done something absolutely horrendous to the fans/club, we should learn to forgive and forget - people move on. With Defoe, i felt a bit sorry for him when we were relegated as i think was just young and really badly advised - he made a mistake but he's another one i wouldn't mind seeing back in the C&B; his goals would have been great for us this season. Joe Cole - yes he did celebrate a bit too much for my liking when he scored against us this season but he plays for a different club now and got caught up in the passion of the moment. The one i don't think anybody will forgive is Ince - being seen in a Manure shirt before he'd even left the club was not on, but to be a little on the controversial side, would Ince make a good future West Ham manager? Would we accept someone who has cuased so much friction in the past?
Submitted by Strodder on 25 April, 2008 - 10:12.
Joe Cole was one of the only players who played his heart out every match when we got relegated under the Roedent. I won't forget that he tried his hardest to keep us up. I don't begrudge him going to Chelsea at all. He has since become one of Englands best players and he would have been a wasted talent with us in the fizzy league. Defoe was a bit of an a*sehole and kept on getting sent off like a spoilt child. I think he will always be a twat i'm afraid.

Fair points, Strodder. Through getting aged and sage-like, I've become accustomed to separating a man from his work having worked with rubbish tradesmen who were great blokes and vice versa & now apply the same rationale to players. As for being daft ...well, there but for the grace, etc. COYI
Submitted by KingPaulo on 25 April, 2008 - 10:32.
You're probably right - i remember reading an interview with Joe Cole either just before or just after he left saying that he was always going to leave West Ham as he wanted to play at the highest level (Champs League etc) and couldn't envisage it happening with West Ham - bearing in mind we had just been relegated he was right - but he said that the ideal way for it to end was that we stayed up, got £10m for him to devlop the youth talent adn one day he would like to come back and play for us; sadly we got only £6m for him and went down but he was still adamant that he would comeback and play for us one day - whether that will happen or not or whether it was just talk is another thing. With Defoe, i always felt with him that he was a good player but knew it and he was always trying to put himslef in the shop window for something bigger and better - that was even before we went down. All the talk on here in the summer about re-signing him led me to think i would've rather had him here than Bent...we could certainly have done with his goals this season and i think he will always score them...

Really sad news to hear Mrs Lampard has passed away at the relatively young age of 58. Nice to see a number of Hammers fans giving their best wishes to the Lampard family. Losing a loved one is the hardest thing anyone ever has to go through and my deepest sympathy goes to the Lampard family.

and it's not just Sears, Tomkins and Collison. I have previously said on this site that I like the way Junior Stanislas and Jordan Spence play the game. Obviously, we couldn't play all at the same time at the moment, but in a couple of years from now it is highly possible ... if the Club's management are enterprising enough. COYI

I understand the press being adement that there will be no sugnificent signings over the summer, but surely the reason we bought in Nani was to identify qualtiy signings. I don't beleive for a second that he was bought in without any intention from the board for a few 'exciting' signings over the summer. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying we will be breaking the bank again but i do beleive we will be getting European quality at 'valued' pricing. I really think this will help us press on next season and i think we have genuine reason to be optimistic for next year! Irons!!!!!!!!!

It will be great to have Di Canio back at Upton Park at the weekend, and from what has already been said on the site this week, him being there will only lift an already positive atmosphere. The players and staff know that we must take three points to secure our 10th place and I think we will see a much better attacking style of play. Newcastle are on a good run and Owen is looking sharp again but our defense are strong enough to keep them at bay, we all know it, look at the first game against Chelsea apart from Joeys goal the defense were solid and we know we can play like that again. As for Newcastle defense big kev has never really been interested in it as long as his team score more goals, I think we will see a lot of runs down the wing with balls coming in, which is why I think we should expect to see Sears on the bench and either Cole or Zamora as partner to Ashton for the height and strength, I hope that parker and noble are both told to push forward covering each other and if the have a gap, SHOOT. We all know they can score and all they need is goal to bring that confidence through, at the moment they seem to shy away from it or it lands in row z. I am happy for it to land in row z as long as they are trying to put the ghosts in the closet and come out with a goal. I can't see this being a pretty game by any means but I do see this as a win for the West Ham and it will give something for us to cheer about, but please if we win but we play crap don't boo at the end. I'm not a curbs lover but I do think he has achieved a hell of a lot with our club, but at the same time I hope to god he does not start with one up front at home. COYI

cant remember who it was but someone in ere pointed out the possibility of finishing 12th and what the outcome would be. well if u ask me, i say the outcome would be BG discarding curbs with immediate effect. the aim after all is top 10 and anything less is perceived as failure. despite it only being 1 or 2 places, the fact is..bottom half would be a DISGRACE taking all factors into consideration. curbs said himself that no bonuses will be got unless we secure 10th place. personally i dont think we'll drop below S***s or newcastle. in fact i can see us securin 10th this weekend as S***s wil prob drop couple of points against bolton. atmosphere will be extraordinarily good against newcastle as i hav been told that paulo will be making his long awaited return to the boleyn.sing it with me....PAULO DICANIO PAULO DICANIO PAULO DICANIO PAULO DICANIO PAULO DICANIO PAULO DICANIO!!!!!

It'd be good to have PDC with us ...& hoping that we'll resist singing him for 90 minutes since we don't sing about any other current individuals & don't wanna think that we live too much in the past. Meanwhile, our young bloods need to be sung - I'm talking Searsy & Nobes. Tune ideas?
Submitted by hammer of OZ on 23 April, 2008 - 23:20.
We are in a bit of a catch 22 situation We wan't to use our Juniors coming through as we see them as a good base for the future but we all know that a lot of young kids seem to be happy sitting on the bench for a club that is fighting for titles and are in Europe than staying loyal and helping a team build for the future.I think we need to blood the young ones, mixed with a bit of experience and do all we can to convince them we are going places. If we don't improve our position next year i am sure the other Premership clubs will start making plays for sears , Noble etc. get rid off the Deadwood and over payed players so we can throw more money and better contracts at the young guys bring in a bit of european flair and keep the guys at the club who are passionate about west ham not just here for money

Submitted by Caitland on 23 April, 2008 - 18:46.
right on Nev Lets face it West ham will never be able to complete with the likes of Man U, Chelsea etc. We are in a vicious circle we can't attract quality players because we can't win anything, and we can't win anything because we can't attract the top players. The only way I can see us developing is to grow our own and try and keep them. Next season lets give them a good run at it...Noble, Spears, Tomkins, etc. Buy some good teenagers in the summer (utilising Nani's knowledge and contacts in Europe)after getting rid of the deadwood and the really high wage earners that aren't giving their all for the club, retaining some role models for the youngsters. If that means going down to the Championship so be it. We need to go through the pain to reap the long term reward. We need to develop the youngsters - they are are future, not what we have at the moment

you say about we cant attract big name players but this is why i feel so strongly we must look abroad. I have seen so many people here slaughter the comments of some, about buying abroad but if we are to improve we have to take chances on foreign players in the hope to discover these top players. They are out there look at the likes of Vidic, Sagna, Eduardo, Berbatov etc pretty much unknown before coming to the prem.

Fair point ...the likes of Seck, Youga, Iriekpen & Ameobi are out there too - keeping Scunthorpe one point off bottom in the chumpionship. It's the way of the game to scour the planet for free gems but surely the Academy is our trump.

the transfer of players on high wages will be done as it was with all of Harry Redknapps players. Transfer them( loan or permanent) and pay part of their wages until the contract runs out.
Submitted by overlandandsee on 23 April, 2008 - 16:08.
It's been refreshing to see the new talent coming into the team and we should applaud Curbs for that (how much of it was forced due to injuries can be debated). The youngsters haven't disgraced themselves and can only improve with more experience. A team still needs some older heads to keep these players in check. I hope lessons were learned this season and that if players are brought in, they are cat-scanned first. Sears, Tomkins and Collison my not be the players to take us to that extra level but let's face it Ljungberg, Faubert, Bellamy & Dyer (OK out for most of the season)and of course the woeful LBM are not going to do take us there either and I know who I'd rather watch. I am happy with a 10th spot finish and would have taken it with open arms 9 months ago. It has been a frustrating second half to the season as we never kicked on from a good position but I suppose a lot of that is the mental attitude of the players knowing they literally had nothing to play for (apart from the fans!) once they are out of the cup competitions. Let's hope some young talent can be scouted by the new staff and some of the "dead wood" (hate the phrase but hard to find a better one) is replaced. I also hope they go into the last 3 games with a more positive attitude. I'm on the fence with the Curbs issue but would like to see him given another season with fit players to see if the team improves. I only get to see the games on TV or live stream living overseas and it's good to see the feedback on here from fans who sit "ringside".

If we do maintain our position above Spares, it will give many of us a small amount of satisfaction. If we managed to win our last three games including doing the double over Man U AGAIN, that would at least give us something to smile about and give us a positive ending to a poor season. I personally think, if beating Man U will affect the title race, then we have a good chance of winning. One thing West Ham is better at than any other team is, throwing a spanner in someone elses works. Whenever we have been in a position to change the dynamics of something, we have usually done so. Why should this season be any different? How good would that be, to do the double over Man U and help the title go to a London club? Well, we can only hope and it at least makes these last few games more interesting.

Good to see a new thread appear Nev. Although some would have said pre-season that 10th was not a bad finish after last seasons relegation fright, I agree that on the whole, this has been a poor season. The performances have been poor, the results have been poor and the atmosphere throughout the club, (not just at games) has left a lot to be desired. In some perverse way, I guess, that bodes well for next season because surely, it can only be an improvement on this one. We do have some quality at the club. If we add one or two more like Dyer, Bellamy, Faubert and Parker - but without the injuries - then we could well march on towards a European spot and hopefully one or two Decent cup runs too. Here's a toast for a better season, Cheers!!!
