Dearest Bobby R.I.PSubmitted by Neville Nixon on 5 May, 2008 - 13:34.
Channel 4 Television have just aired Escape To Victory, while not wanting to be objectional on this sunny bank holiday it would be remiss not to mention the travesty of the way the FA and other relevant powers that be treated the greatest footballer this country has ever produced..West Ham United and England's Bobby Moore
To ramble on the media vernacular, the BBC comedy drama show The invisibles features a safe cracker who's mantra is " I am William Shakespeare, I am Bobby Moore" he names the personification of British brilliance, and yet this great icon, who would have been a multi multi millionaire in today's game was forced to play second fiddle to Sylvester Stallone and be the fall guy when required! ......
What a mean mistreatment of a man who deserved so much more (no pun intended). If one of today's 'heroes' was treated as badly there would be a public outcry, how on earth the various authorities let such a noble figure head of all that was great about football have to scratch around for a living having led his country to the ultimate pinnacle beggars belief.........
When Rio, Frank Jnr, Joey Cole, 'Geordie Boy', Paul Ince and Jermaine Defoe among many others ply their trade maybe they should remember one of the main reasons why they arrived at West Ham United in the first place, they should remember Bobby Moore when they speak to their respective accountants, and they should do the decent thing and pledge as much as they can to the Bobby Moore fund against cancer..
As a boy I remember Bobby running out against Man U in 1968 at the Boleyn, he stunk of Vitalis, a hair product that he was forced to endorse in order to live a 'comfortable' life style. - Ed

Good post Nev, although you
Good post Nev, although you cant blame anyone for Bobby Moore's lifestyle being inferior to today's player. His lifestyle was still very high profile even if it wasnt what players have today. One thing for sure is that the likes of Moore, Best, Charlton, Pele, Zico etc are why players have the riches they have today. Its the charisma and outstanding entertainment these players oozed that made the big media money spinners come in licking their lips. Footballers today are well paid pawns in a greedy media world that pimps their game. Moore would have been completely ruined in this world. His good nature and professionalism earnt him absolute respect and thats how it should be left. But as for donating to cancer, yeah footballers and anyone else with coin should donate. I've had a monthly direct debit with Cancer Research for over 5 years now as well as direct debits to sponsor a school in thailand and to peta.org for animal cruelty. Its a token of appreciation that this world isnt a bed of roses for everyone. PS - Im gutted, knowing the season is a game away from closure! WH Till I Die

classic film.moore the legend
Absolute Great Post Nev. That's a real gut cruncher at the end. I remember sports personalities endorsing Vitalis, too. Imagine a player nowadays on 80 Grand a week saying he still had to endorse products to make ends meet! We have to face up to the fact that the sport has been HUBAR-ed (hyped up beyond all recognition). If Bobby Moore could have been pampered like today's players, with 'state of the art' equipment, trainers, and physio, who knows what he might have done? Then again, maybe he woulda grown kinda soft. The money and the hype are a double-edged sword, and there's very few don't get cut by it. At any rate, there's very few like Bobby Moore, in any era. By the way, I saw the movie you speak of. It WAS a travesty to make any of those great players seem the lesser of Sly Stalone. But even though the conclusion was naf, I kind of admired them for saying, "wait a minute, we can WIN this game" and not escaping on account of beating the Gerrys was better. Go England!!!
I saw this film too, fantastic! I don't mind admitting that I had a tear in my eye at the end. Not cos of the cheesy 'USA wins the day' ending but because I realised that I've only ever seen this film with my grandad who was a mad keen Hammer and taught me as a lad about the legend of Bobby Moore (no flash DVD's and video's in those days!). To watch it without him seemed wrong somehow. In response to your post Ashes, I don't think Bobby would have begrudged any of todays players the money they earn. I guess it one of sporting histories cruelest ironies that Bobby played in an era when the players earnt little and the club chairmen flogged them into the ground for their own gains. I guess today the players have equalled the balance I guess. At least todays favourites like Marky Noble etc will be able to retire with some cash and not have to scratch around like Mooro. Great post Nev, really enjoyed it.
I know how you feel, Denbig. It was my father in law (who is still alive) who taught me all about West Ham and Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. It was he who converted me to West Ham. When you become a fan under the tutelage of someone else who saw these great players first hand, you really see what West Ham means. I saw escape to victory in China of all places, where me and the mrs were for six weeks as part of a research trip. We were so lonely for home by this time that when we saw the movie we got all choked up, particularly for me father-in-law, since seeing Bobby Moore made us think about West Ham. Well, it can't be all cheesy if it makes us have good memories like that, eh? What more 'ave you got than family???

Hello Lads, I am interesting to buy some really nice book about WHU..Any suggestions? thanks a lot.Joe The Hammer
How very concisely summed up A Hammer I could not agree more (npi). Unfortunately todays society that chases the pound has lost sight of real values, something we will never see again, I'm sad to say.............
walking in a Boogers wonderland
A fairly made point, Nev but am respectfully aware that social values as well as the era has changed. We were once West Ham supporters but now find ourselves consumers of a (once) sport related 'game' in a frequently hyped, manipulated and cunningly marketed & often fantasist age. Our grandparents barely had a pot to pee in whilst we chuck our brass around willy-nilly. However, Bobby Moore had dignity - which is a commodity few of us can now spell let alone dream of possessing & not least shown to me when this snot-nosed kid asked for an autograph when Bobby opened a poxy 'home improvement' type show in Southend. Perhaps it's best to respectfully reflect on Bobby's manly qualities rather than risk antagonising those who'll demand an apology from the Queen or seek counselling due to spilling blue sauce on their shirts in despair. Hundreds of local/national/international charitable causes surround each of us - if only we properly realised how lucky we are not to (yet) need them. May God bless the memory, surviving family and the lessons that we can learn from Bobby Moore.
