Should the Lap of Honour Be Banned !Submitted by Themanfromdelmonte on 7 May, 2008 - 22:10.
It is traditional for the manager and the team to take a bow and for the players to do a lap of honour and milk the applause of the crowd at the end of the last home match. With so many fans not behind the manager and given so many inept and not so enjoyable performances despite a safe mid-table finish, I think it might be inappropriate to go ahead with this ritual on Sunday. Who agrees ?

I do of course know it's a 2 way street. I am not a hypocrite so I will not be applauding Curbs, Neill or LBM. Curbs doesn't even applaud his substituted players when they come off and has never once acknowledged or applauded the crowd especially our phenomenal away fans, so it will be hypocritical of him to lead the players applause on Sunday. Do you now see where I am coming from? Heaven forbid if we were to play badly like against Derby and the team got booed, the team won't be up for doing a lap of honour anyway!
See what you're saying Del, neither this team nor Curbs have been at this club as long as I or certainly not as long as you have, they are not the be all and end all of this club. I will go to the last game of the season SUPPORTING MY club and I'll enjoy applauding the club that have given my family and me so much enjoyment over the years. I’m going tomorrow with a positive attitude (as always) to see my team beat Villa on the last day of the season, in the sunshine (Jan’s gonna be there too because Anthony is working in America for a week or so) I am determined to enjoy this day and be grateful; 'WE' are West Hams' Claret n Blue Army
I agree we should all clap on sunday I will be clapping, Im not happy with curbs and the descisons he has an hasnt made this season but I love the club and will clap out of respect for are club. COY clapping irons!!!
Maybe we should leave it as some of the players might pull something and hurt themselves.Phippsy
LOL Ye but it's not like any of the non-injured were going to the Euros anyway so they would have plenty of time to recover in time(fingers crossed) for next season.
How about a compromise, half a lap of honour and half a lap of dishonour? How about changing the song whilst we are about it to "The Grand Old Duke of Turds, He had Ten thousand players, He marched them up to the top half of the Prem and he marched them down again, And when they were up they were defending, And when they were down they were defending, And when they were only half way up they stayed there for the rest of the season!"
Totally disagree, agree with a couple of comments below in it allows the players to thank the fans for their support. Not going to go over old ground re this season but there are a number of players who I believe have put in enough effort to warrant a clap even from those perched up above the dugout. If you feel that strongly then get up and leave when the final whistle goes.
Great point. There are some players who deserve a clap for trying their hardest even if others have been lay-abouts. It's about their thanks for our support as you said, so hey let's soak it up! Phippsy
No need for any drama. If you don't like it go home as usual at the end. That allows people who want to show their appreciation to do so. The players may also want an opportunity to show their thanks for the support they've received this season in undeniably difficult circumstances.
I would say Delmonte, enjoy our last game and go along with it! Why turn ourselves sour and spoil our own enjoyment, lets all leave UP happy. You applaud the players and the players applaud the fans back and come on lets just do it for the kids at least. We all have issues with the bad performances, but lets just leave it and air our points here instead. Sorry don't agree!
Dave, having only seen 7 home wins and some dire performances in a sub-dued atmosphere I aint really up for Curbs to take a bow neither is he by the sounds of things. I would certainly applaud McCartney, Mullins,Ashton, Noble, Upson, Cole, Anton, Parker, Solano Green & the kids, but I would be a hypocrite if I applauded, LBM & Neill. That's my point for the first time in 30 years I am not motivated to stay behind and see a lap of honour. Talking of hypocrites Curbs has never made any attempt to bond with the crowd and not once applauded our phenomenal away following so I don't think it's right that he might want to that on the last day of the season because tradition demands that, when he had all year to do so. See where I am coming from?
Of course i can see your point, but will it make you feel any better by showing it? Applaud the players who put the effort in and just wave to Curbs, Neill and LBM and thats a wave goodbye!
No simple as, most of em been playing their hearts out when their on the pitch.
I think Boa-Morte should get his own lap of honour for playing really really good all season.
Quashie should as well
i agree with apache which is that it is more about them applauding our support this season, ok it hasnt been the most interesting of seasons but to boo or to cancel the lap of honour would be such an insult to the players that have put there best in week in and week out.
Isn't it as much about the manager and the players applauding the fans as much as the other way round? Surely some of the players deserve recognition for their efforts this season; Green, Linda, Upson, Noble etc? Hell, we could even start a debate about the squad and Curbs deserving some recognition for avoiding a relegation battle despite our injury situation...
The players you mentioned are the likely candidates for Player and Runner up of the season and the recipients will of course be announced and be acknowledged in a separate ceremony to the lap of honour.
They should do a lap of shame, heads bowed holding a banner apologising for the tripe they have served up this season. Curbs should walk around with a target on his back withe a banner apologising for his tactical ineptness and boring style of play
