How Big Will Summer Clear Out Be At West HamSubmitted by Neville Nixon on 8 May, 2008 - 10:26.
Regular visitors will know that westhamfans.org has never been in the business of pushing the scurrilous rumor, however there is growing evidence that this summer's predicted clear out from the Boleyn will be 'extremely comprehensive' according to reports emanating from Iceland.
The red tops have already picked up on the fact that big earners Freddie Ljungberg, Lucas Neill and Luis Boa Morte are all being offered to clubs with Hammers having to offer compensation payments to the players and their respective new clubs, but it appears that the management team of Alan Curbishley and Mervyn Day and the entire back room staff 'imported' from Charlton are part of the clear out!
The current chairman is angry and alarmed at how much money former chairman Eggert Magnusson committed the club to paying in wages, basically he is happy to bank roll more transfers BUT not before the dead wood is cut out. The only problem is, that to many fans and observers there is an awful lot of cutting to be done, or perhaps the fans and owners can't see the forest for the trees? - Ed

I was wondering, is it next season that substitutes are going up from 5 too 7? seems odd then that we have to have a smaller squad ,can you imagine how we would have coped this season,i dont think we would have had a bench.CJ
Bellamy and Dyer were at the bondholders on Thursday and are training under John Green privately as the club physios are to busy to give one on one treatment. Bellamy expects to play for Wales in the next few weeks.
Great he's gonna play for Wales again! Like his aborted mid-season comeback - played for Wales and hasn't been seen since. I wish someone would tell these f*uckers that WE pay their wages ffs!
Since we signed him, has Bellamy played more internationals than club games? I think he has has had 6 games for us, so it must be close.
According to The Sun today, and a number of websites, we are linked with a move for 26 yr old Brazillian central defender Diego Gaucho from Gil Vicente - anyone know anything about him other than what they have got from Google?
we have to get rid of the old players...we have to give credit to curbs to he was man enough to let nani come on board cause he is useless of recruting young players...he only bought from the uk and im a bit surprised he bought faubert...anyways i think we should buy pablo piatti , nuri sahin, try for kerlon, and i would buy zarate...defence is relatively good....neil is getting a bit old and i would try and buy some one and we need a new left back cause mccartney is good at defending but doesn't know how to play attacking footbal...does anybody know about diego that we have made a bid for? also di natale is class
Why is it that Curb's pre-match comments are always about how good the opposition are and never about his own team? He did it last week and now he is spurting on about the "fantastic season Villa have had and they are a top six side blah blah blah" If he can't blow his own trumpet then he can't expect the fans to do it for him. Come on Curbs a bit of encouragement please......
The good news according to the o/s is that Ferdinand and Ashton are fit and there is a chance of Upson playing. The bad news is that Boa Morte is also fit!!!
I was confident we would beat VILLA tomorrow ,but with the news that ASHTON,UPSON and FERDINAND all unlikely to play (see above)it does not look good.A botched up defence and toothless frontline does not bode well.
THIS is typical west ham , all fart NO crap crappy klint ...
At the beginning of the year, curbs denied spending heavily in the summer and in fairness to the idiot , he pointed out that we had cancelled out our spending with sales but now the strings have been tightened by BG and weve had a poor season he is quoted in the guardian as saying "We're all hoping for better things next year. We invested heavily in the summer and a lot of those players haven't been around so it'll be nice when there are." ....It will be a mistake to let Solano go as well , as he is a cracking squad player and at the moment sadly our only creative player .... typical west ham , i wish our management had the same passion as the fans do...
666, I think that Curb's was initially speaking of gross transaction/investment and latterly as net spending/investment. I aint a whizz-kid but the difference is a big one... Would we rather have had NRC sulking for us all season? Agree re Solano.
Friday teatime and nothing on here about the pending last game of the season? I assume that we are all cacking ourselves in confronting the dread of 11th spot..!?
According to Curbishley there will not be wholesale changes in the squad over the summer and the rumours about Bobby Z and other players is all "nonsense" there has not been offers from any club for Z-Man or anyone else, yet!
For all the money that has been spent (and I don't care about the incomes we made) we have brought in a load of crap in my opinion. About time Ljunberg has come under the recognition of how useless he has been. get the championship players out or we will not move forward. Zamora and Cole have had their time and I'm not too impressed, Cole cant score and looks at the best he will get and I am so tired of Zamora's inconsistency. The only players i rate that Curbs has brought in- Upson, Bellamy, Parker maybe Dyer but then, whats the point having him for 10 games a season. I am excited about this window but only because of Nani whom i hope and pray can get this club up and running from mid table to top 6. The entire squad lacks quality at the moment and we need to get some players who will bring back the attacking spark to West Ham. No more Prem oldies or a bunch of cash chasing thieves.
Nev..can you please do something about these people who come on here and advertise stuff, latest thread today is pushing a site to sell bloody trainers..this is a football forum for all things West Ham not some hawkers jamboree...please Nev block these people who make it a chore sometimes on here..Isaac..
I would get rid of Bellamy he has done F all, played about 6 games, crocked all season, getting paid plenty for nothing. We should not of bought him he has always been injury prone.
Have to disagree I'm afraid. I know Bellers has had his fair share of injuries during his career, but he looked really sharp in the few games he got. Hopefully we will get a good thirty games out of him next season and maybe he or Parker should also be made captain.
I disagree with you,we will be lucky if he plays 12 games,i bet i am not far wrong. We want someone who plays week in week out and is clinical in front of goal,Ashton isnt up for it either.
Carlton Cole is bomb proof but unfortunately cannot hit a cows arse from 6 yds..a player with CC's tenacity and hunger coupled with his endurance and fitness levels plus 20 goals a season to boot is what we need..along with 90% of premiership aswell..
cole has done very well this season when he has been up front on his own. the thing to remember about cole is that he can still improve further. plenty of people say he lacks quality, but i think he is improving all the time and he needs a good pre season. the one thing he lacks is being clinical in front of goal. i know we have a big squad but i certainly wouldnt get rid of him. his commitment has impressed me along with the fact that he can get better.
You make a very good point Frith'. Some of the comments and criticism of Cole are very short-sighted. He already gives us something with his ability to hold the ball up and to win a majority of 50/50 balls. He does need to improve even though he has done so all season. He is only young and as long as he is willing to work hard, (which he does) he will continue improving and will be a valuable asset to this team for some time. If it wasn't for a few great saves he could have doubled his goal tally this season. I agree, his finishing is what he needs to work on most and I'm sure he will. Most people at the club will tell you that Cole and Upson are probably two of the hardest workers in training.
West Ham Till I Die
I agree, he's a grinder and if we ain't gonna get any big money strikers then let him see if he can progress further. He'll have to scrap it out with shaton as the big striker up with sears/bellamy tho but he's worth keeping if all we'd get is a paltry 2M for him, sod that.
CS, I saw your submission as an appropriate Freudian slip after England effectively shat-on Dean and us with zero costs/rehab facilities being offered (it certainly wasn't mentioned if they did) after he got crocked doing a fantastic job during national training two effing summers ago. COYI. PS, Two yellows and stroppily off for NRC later...
We have got no one decent up front, thats why we didnt score hardly any goals. We will not get our moneys worth out of Bellamy, and the others are championship material,i am hoping Sears starts growing up quickly like Rooney did.
No way ,BELLAMY was our most impressive player before he got injured. He has got great turn of pace and once he gets this hernia problem sorted out he will be a first team regular for sure.
get rid of bellamy? are u joking? fair enough hes only played 7 games i think it is but the guy was absolute quality when fit. ratio of goal every 2 games, his finishing was the best ive seen since carlos. i think bellamy, parker and dyer will all stay. this season is a season that we gota all forget bout.the injuries were exceptional but genunely id be shocked if we experienced this again next year! im lookin forward to the day we have bellamy and dyer in the same team again. their pace is electrifying. green, neill, ferdinand, upson, mccartney, dyer, faubert, parker, noble, bellamy, ashton. subs: wright, pantsil, tomkins, etherington, sears. - now thers a team id like to see. bring on the player exodus!!
Who prefers the team we had under Pardew in our first season back in the Prem to the one we have now?
Obviously alot of problems have gone on at our beloved club since then but we used to play better football back then.
Curbs has got to go,didnt want him in the first place, were not going to progress with him, just gna sit in midtable and next seasoin he will prob have another excuse to why weve failed.
We need to get rid of players such as Spector, Davenport, LBM, Mullins, Cole, Quashie, and poss a few more. We need new left side, McCartneys has a good season but we need to strengthen, Wayne Bridge?
Need Bellamy back asap and Dyer for pace, but we lack a creative midfield player, Benayoun was quality should never had sold him.
Lets hope for a win Sunday and finish above Tottscum in what has been a poor season surrounded by injuries
Totaly academic really. That team was then...and it went horridly wrong and this team is now. If we're pulling teams out of the past, because thats what Pardews team was - the past, I'd rather watch the team of 85/86 ta.
I know i did. We were wining rave reviews other fans would talk about our players and how great they looked. The football was brilliant, we put in effort non stop. Big Marlon upfront, Yossi burning up and down the wings, the left hand partnership of Konchesky and Etherington. I remembar being on Match of the day first and the punters talking about our tactics and how good we were - now look at us, A team of crocks, a bunch of oldies clinging to the football they have left, and a manager that looks a fukin mess every week. We have been a discrace to the West ham traditions this seaon and i wouldnt be one bit enoyed if the whole squad was told to piss off minor the odd 3 or 4.
You could say the same about the support. I don't think it has sunk in to many fans how much difference they can and have made this season. Why not, forget about about blaming everyone for being crap and concentrating on supporting the efforts of WHOEVER is here next season. There are better squads/teams than West Ham that have not managed to make the top 10 this season.
Agreed, BMS ...have just been listening to Niall Quim on 5 Live and reckon his bunch at Dunderland are consolidating too well for my comfort in the face of our dwang. What can we do? ...we could do worse than follow the example of their support who are close on our tails at being publicly loyal to the club.
I'm not a curbs lover but to bang on about Pards the man who nearly took us down and the guy who could'nt control the ego's that unfortunately premiership footy nurture is a bit tiresome..Yes he played mildly entertaining footy for one season but at best he is a good fizzy pop manager..I would like too see the back of Curbs and get back to old West Ham ways but Pards was not the answer he would've had us yo-yoing like a good 'un and I do not want them days back. The squad is coming together nicely with the youngsters coming through its just a pity Curbs. may well still be at the helm.
Isaac, I'm with you. Pard's may now be maturing as a MANAGER - but evidently not too brilliantly with his current shower which argues that his success with us was coincidental. Tactical appeal alone doesn't mitigate his managerial failures upon West Ham that 'happened' too thick and fast & were too close to calamity in the end.
Pardew did his homework when he came to the club and tried his best to continue the playing traditions of previous West Ham teams, he did great IMHO.
adelaide - i will have a pint of what you've had .... because quite simply our performance against man utd was a disgrace, the article i posted into this thread is frustratingly annoying , because our management needs to be changed , success requires ruthlessness and to be honest everyone knows deep down Curbishley will never get west ham to finish in the top 6 ... EVERY curbishley fans knows this , so why persist with a man happy with mediocrity.....?
We played our best in a long time against ManU despite the score. The hosts set the stage and we tried good things all game and they came off or almost did. How do you work out who to keep and who to get rid of when we’ve got worse as the high profile injured players have returned? Keep a sprinkling of good oldies, reap from the academy and replace injury prone with avg 22 yo good runners / athletes who are proud to be whu squadies and build from there. Easier said than done but :)
I have said before that we had signed too many players who were injury prone and average, or who came just for the money Magnusson was offering. A total clear-out apart from my first 11 is a necessity and that includes the manager and his back room staff. Curbishley is not the man to take West Ham forward and I want rid of him and the majority of his signings (not Dyer) for next season!
I think we have every reason to be quite optimistic about next season. Our best players have not seen much action this season so, assuming they can get fit, it will be like having a new team. Deano has begun to return to his best over the last three or four games and with a fully fit Bellamy, Dyer, Parker (and possibly Etherington), we will have a team of genuine pace and the quality of our passing play should improve no end. Likewise a fully fit Collins and Gabiddon will help shore up the defence during times of crisis. Add to this two or three promising young players from the continent and it will be like having a whole new squad in August. I'm also pleased to see BBC Sport are quoting an official as saying that Curbs will still be in charge at the beginning of the season as I think stability is very important. However, whether he is still in charge at the end of October depends on our performances, but it would be good for the club if he can turn it around and with the above players back there should be no reason why he can't. Finally, I wouldn't want to see Cole go. He is much improved this season, is big and strong and is the kind of player that Deano and Bellamy can feed off. In many ways he is like Heskey - doesn't score many but his team effort is first class. And who knows, if he continues to improve he may begin to find the net a bit more often. So players to go in my book are Camara, Walker, Quashie, Davenport, Solano, LBM and, regrettably, Mullins and Zamora (two top servants for the club, but not up to standard). Possibly Bowyer too. Should get twenty quid for that lot!
oh joy..............http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/west_ham_utd/7389885.stm
666 I presume that was a sarcastic oh joy ??? I actually believe that it makes perfectly good sense in what we are trying to do...Trim the big squad we have and that means getting rid of players that are not good enough or are on extravagant wages....Bring in a few more premiership standard players (hopefully skillful ones that Nani may have eyed up) and build them around the core of british players we have...along with the prospect of sear/tommers & collison it doesnt look too bad...Lets not become another Chelski and keep the homegrown values of the club we cherish...His point about improving the training/injury facilities is a breath of fresh air also...I for one am delighted with his plans for the future...Hope more agree...COYI
That seems like a pretty straight article; it's got a ring of truth to it. Trouble is, who is Curbs gonna sell for anything close to what we paid for 'em? Neill hasn't been playing attractive football -- who's gonna want him? Ljungberg is crocked, Bellamy's crocked, Dyer's Crocked, Parker spent most of the season crocked and hasn't been spectacular, Faubert's been crocked. Who is Curbs gonna sell? Might get 2M for Cole from Sunderland. Might get 2M for Bobby Z. Wow! that's 4M. Who are we gonna get for that: not even Harry Kewell and HE'S CROCKED!!!! Don't mind me, I'm just musing. But seriously, does the future look birght? Does it look Claret and Blue? It's going to take a shrewd manager, a very talented young squad, and some wise experience from a few excellent players to challenge for a UEFA cup spot. It CAN be done (I'm eternally optimistic), but it won't be easy. Look forward to a rough ride next season, boys. COYI!!!!
We're in exactly the same position Newcastle were! We play some of the dullest football in the divisionn. There are too many unanswered questions behind the scenes, we have a board which doesn't give straight answers and have too many shite players in a squad of 40.
I can't understnad why people are blaming the clearout on a crap season and poor management. We have a squad of over 40 players which is a LOT in the premier league. All this clearout is, is if we want to sign new players we have to get rid of the crap ones which haven't seen the green stuff. Which in my eyes is good management, why build a team with 50 players when most of that will go on wages, I can see us shipping out about 8 players not sure who bringing in only two or three. But this isn't a sign of bad times and unrest between the board and Curbs, its a sign of the club wanting to push forward and fight the uefa cup next season. COYI
Crap HALF Season, to be honest. The first half of the season had it's ups and downs (losses to Toffees and Citeh, wins against United and Liverpool), but we did pretty good and we already had heaps of injuries. But Since February, our record would have to be one of the worst in the Prem, and in the last six we're only better than Derby. I think you'd have to admit that is dismal. But I can see it your way, too, Phil. It's just that Nev has signalled what is possibly a much bigger clearout than many of us expected. And it looks like similar things are going to happen around the world game: Rijkaard will be out of a job, Sven is going to be out of a job, why not Curbs, too? It would be a radical step, I agree, and it could either push us into new territory, or into the danger zone. But I do think we could be in danger anyway, with the team we have now.
I'll believe it when I see it. But I gotta tell ya, a sure sign of how dismal this season has been (especially the second half) is that my mood about West Ham immediately picked up with the though of a big clearout that included Curbishley and Day. Yes, I agree with some of the posts that say it may mean a relegation battle next season, but if we go back out next season with this team and this manager we're in for a relegation battle anyway. I RELISH the idea of BIG taking a chance on something better. Here are the people who MUST stay: Green, Tomkins, Upson, Ferdinand, Collison, Noble, Parker, Faubert, Sears. Some of them, if you think about it, could be or even should be reserves for their respective positions if we build a great team. All of them, on their day, have great potential. Here are the people who COULD stay: Pantsil (worth keeping another season to see how he develops), McCartney (as backup), Solano (aging, but has a great game sense and usually good touch), one of Cole or Zamora (coming off the bench). Here are the people who SHOULD GO: Spector, Etherington, Mullins, Bowyer, Boa Morte, Quashie, Davenport, Collins, Gabbidon (all to be thanked, but all really more suited to the championship than the EPL). Here are the big unknowns: Dyer and Bellamy -- can they ever play again at the top level? FInally, here are the management staff that can go: Curbishley, Day and the CHARLTON CREW and the physio team. BIG CLEAR OUT??? Yes. Could we do better? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT! ONWARDS AND UPWARDS WITH THE BUBBLES, COYI!!!!!!
