Are You Happy With Midtable?Submitted by Themanfromdelmonte on 15 May, 2008 - 16:14.
The table doesn't lie, but I think we were lucky that Newcastle & S***s had stinkers league wise otherwise we may have finished 12th, but there can be no hiding from the fact that our results since February was relegation form. I don't buy into the school of thought that this was a season of consolidation after a relegation scare. The facts are Curbs spent £49m ( £23m recouped from sales) and in the process took the wage bill to £52m when we only turnover £57m. Many of the players he bought are in the autumn of their careers and come with baggage and are injury prone and have no or limited sell on value. Our cup final side had more power, flair and pace in defence as did the team that beat Man U to stay up. We have therefore gone sideways and squandered a lot of money in the process which has not brought much needed stability. Our tactics and quality of football has been poor for most of the season and our 7 homes wins and the number of goals scored was bettered by many of the teams who finished below us. It was our pre-Feb away form that saved us from getting caught up in a relegation dog fight and injuries cannot be blamed for this as we have had them all season. In this context are you happy with 10th?

Delighted with 10th and top
Delighted with 10th and top half of the table finished but all your other points agree with totally. To be fair we should not have been in a relegation dogfight last season so really have we improved at all since we come back into the Prem? No, probably not which adds another layer of despair to this season. Bring on the next one, cos if we don't improve heads will roll!!!!

With so many also ran teams in the bottom half and with us being points wise closer to Boro & Sunderland than Everton & Villa, I think 10th rather flatters us. After all we only won 7 home games which was bettered by many of the struggler's. We won 13 in total which was 1 more than last season and as such there can no getting away that our results since February was relegation form despite holding on to a 10th spot.
Over the moon Del, over the moon. Just think. We could have finished 5th or 6th from bottom , just avoided relegation and had an exciting season. Can't wait for another season of such excitement. I am pooing my pants in anticipation.
I'd have preferred 12th achieved with style personally.
