Fans - do we really do our part?

I was just flicking through the latest news section on Z-Man'spossible transfer to Fulham and read a post by Boogerscaravan - in it he stated that he remembered Z-Man had been given a fair amount of stick when he first arrived at UP but had since proved himself to be West Ham through and through; this got me thinking. I don't remember Z-Man getting any grief from the fans but then again i haven't been to UP (for various reasons) for years - what concerns me is a bit of a worrying trend that we seem to get on the backs of a lot of players who seem not to meet our expectations. If you look at the grief that CC, LBM, Neill, Ljungberg and even Deano have had to put up with over this season - what do these guys need to do to get the backing of the C&B faithful? You could say that these players (except Ashton) are crap but if i look back, i don't remember Ljungberg being crap at Arsenal, or Neill being crap at BlackBurn, or even LBM being crap at Fulham - they were all really good players for their respective teams. Did they turn crap overnight? I don't think so but you can only be motivated for so long with 30,000 people booing you or telling you how useless you are, regardless of the amount of money you are paid. I am no psychologist but having worked in 'Sales' virtually all my life, you go any amount of time without a positive result (personally speaking) you start doubting your own ability and within time either you try too hard or don't try at all becuase you believe what people are telling you. Whilst Curbishley is the manager, we as fans have more effect over how our team plays than he does and i feel that if we want them to play to their best, we have to do our part but have we done it enough? If we were getting on the case of Z-Man when he joined, what does a player of today have to do to prove he is worthy of wearing the C&B, and how long is it going to take him?

I think booing ljungberg and neill is disgracful as they are decent players who have had some lapses in form over this season. As for LBM, as a season ticket holder what am i meant to do each week when this bloke who is being paid up to 50 grand a week, cannot pass, dribble, tackle or shoot. Curbs doesnt seem to do anything about his disgraceful performances. Am i wrong?

i think the more we boo our team, the more we are destroying our club. What player would want to come to upton park if he knows the fans are going to boo him if he makes a mistake. The booingness has to stop next season cos even this season when the team won they still got booed. What do you have to do to please people. We are making a total show of our team if it keeps going nobody will want to play for us

Yep ...booing sucks. To me it demonstrates shallow & fickle individuals strutting their dick-head selves in front of the world now that all proper games are broadcast globally. It makes me look a mug too - which I don't like. We have plenty of time to mutter to others on the stairs and in the chippy on our way-out of the match without shouting to the entire listening football diaspora that 'hey, we are West Ham and we can't cope!' By the time I'm back at the tube I've undoubtedly shared much 'tutting' and shaking of the head with other fans to know the situation in an unspoken but understood way. I reckon that the boo 'society' are socially constipated, communicatively inept & weak in being unable to draw unshakable pride in OUR colours. I seriously question the personal integrity of any boo-boy & regard them with utter contempt. If it wasn't for the CCTV's and me 'knowing better' I'd seriously consider nobbling them if I could emerge with my crime-free record intact. Their 'I've paid so I'm entitled' or 'the players are paid a mint' sh!te does not entitle them to insult me and my shirt. COYI (PS. Hearing red scousers whine about & boo Houllier a few seasons ago makes me gleeful still, whilst an individual on this spoilt-brat par is the petulant, blue, oil-whore for sacking Sir Avram Grant. We must capitalise on chelski having an utterly spolit wanker for an owner ...maybe it's 'new-thread' time?)

Maybe crap is a bit of a strong word but the players you mention, if they are so good why did their respective clubs let them go? A bit past it maybe? Wenger is certainly no mug for example and Arsenal are not a selling team. And it's not exactly as if we paid megabucks which forced the selling clubs hand.Deano apart, I would also say to you that none of your mentioned players are in the mould of the type we supporters are accustomed to or can't now play in the manner we are accustomed to. Even Pardew tried, on limited funds to build a "West Ham" style team and took the trouble to look at our history. Tevez or Ljunberg, Di Canio or LBM, Neill or Repka, Carlton Cole or well, I can't think of another striker off the top of my head with so few goals. Come on.who would you rather have? I don't boo at Upton Park but, I'm not exactly hysterical with emotion either. Only one man can do something about that. And his history suggests to me it ain't gonna happen either.

Fair comment Dave, but i just feel that we are making a rod for our own backs in some ways - these players could have, and i mean could, worked out quite well for us had we the fans given them time - Z-Man did. Don't get me wrong i am not putting Z-man in the same class as Di Canio or Tevez but he has done a job and proved he is worthy of wearing the C&B; i just don't think we do ourselves any favours by not giving these other players time and support to do the same. Maybe they are past it; maybe they wanted to leave the other clubs for a new challenge, or maybe they just wanted to go where the biggest wad of cash was being chucked at them, but giving them constant shite can't be helping them try to reproduce the form they showed a couple seasons ago at their old clubs can it? Once again, i'm only throwing this open to debate becuase it concerns me a little - an element of the fans even turned on Deano early this season and that to me is just not on - how can we say we want to keep our best players whilst 2 or 3 months ago we were slinging crap crappy klint at him. Equally, any player who comes here is going to be asking the same question don't you think?

The element of fans who slaughtered Deano have gone very quiet of late. Not mentioning any names but some are even now posting that this club should not sell as he is a 20 goals a season man. As I recall, Pardew in Deanos first season ,gave him a special diet and fitness programme over the summer. Then he got the injury and had a year out.Whether it was fat or muscle isn't the issue with me. Its why didn't anyone do something about it earlier? Over to you Curbs.

With respect Dave, I think a "big boy" like Ashton aught to be able to work out for himself that pizza is not the best diet if you want to be a finely tuned athlete. His "recovery" time must be one of the longest in the history of the game and suggests something wrong in his self discipline and desire. I didn't like the bleached hair, I didn't like his comments about having company in the treatment room, I didn't like the way he boasted about being pedantic with the backroom staff about his socks and stuff, I didn't like what looked like sulking at times last season, I didn't like his obvious lack of mobility and bulk - and I think he merited some of the stick he got. Of ourse, I will agree that Curbishley probably didn't handle the situation well but Ashton has to take personal responsibility as well surely?

Fanno, I can't quite believe it but I actually agree with every word you have written above. I now need to go and lie down, just in case I'm coming down with something.

Fanno, I don't see what the colour of his hair has got to do with anything? I agree that he looked a bit sulky at times and I didn't like that. As for his size, remember he was always a chunky lad. As I've said before I have a mate who's had a season ticket at Crewe for years and I asked him if Deano is bigger than he was starting out and he said he was the same size as he used to be and plays the same way he did too. I think people should give him credit for coming back from such a serious knock. With a full pre-season the fans will see the best of him I'm sure of that...whether those fans are cockneys or mancs remains to be seen.....
