Which Academy Kid Is Going To Become A Superstar?

It is absolutely brilliant that we have new batch of promising kids coming through. Collinson, Sears & Tomkins all played in the first team last season, but who do you think will go all the way to the top and why?

All 3 need to go out on loan to lower league sides, get some experience and then can we decipher if they'll become great.

From what ive seen of Collison he hasnt impressed me YET.Tomkins looks ok thou he seems to lack a bit of pace which worrys me thou he looks superb in the air.In my mind Sears looks the best prospect,he has electric pace and a super eye for goal.Sears weakness does seem to be his upper strength thou that will come with gym excercise and experience.CJ

Well we haven't seen much of Collison, so I can't really make an assumption about him. If Sears puts on a bit of weight or bulks up a bit then I believe he would add a great addition to the squad. I do believe Tomkins also has the ability to become a good player. Although he made mistakes last season, they were his first batch of games so he obviously needs some experience.

Might it be a possibility that for a West Ham Academy player to go on and become a great player he needs to leave West Ham? Apart from the obvious three, who have we had that have BECOME great whilst still with us, apart from those 3? Are we only able to take a diamond in the rough so far towards the horizon of greatness before the top 4's equivalent of Gabi Tolkowsky comes along to lead them on to their "Pink Sun Rise"? Some great players like Alan Ball for example get over-looked by the clubs they start for and it is only from a 'real start’ elsewhere that they go on to become great. Maybe we need to buy success as a club a la Chelshitski and become established for a few years at that level before our young prodigies can remain with us and attain greatness? Just a thought

Assuming your three are the boys of '66, how about Brooking and Martin?

I was thinking more about the theme of my post and what other peoples thoughts were on that rather than just adding to the list; what j'a think?

Sorry to reduce it to semantics but it all rather depends on how we define "great". In this context I'd say anyone who became an international would be a "great" academy product. It is cetainly possible to retain a great player at the club, but probably requires a minimum of challenging for honours. Beyond that it depends on the character of the player.

Tonka - definately. Looking forward to seeing him next season - hope he gets many chances to shine.

Given the rub of the green Tomkins will make the England squad, he has progressed to this point despite losing a year out to a shoulder problem; potentially top top class. I was told about him three years ago and the latest name i've been told as a tip for the top is Richie or Rickie Hall (i think that was right) he's a black kid, I don't know anything else about him other than that he is held in very high esteem. Junior Stanislas is a goal scoring right winger who will break into the first team picture this year along with Jordan Spence; plays centre back but may well end up a right back like Glen Johnson. One to watch out for in the youth team this year is Daniel Kearns an Irish midfielder.

el martillo, The kid your talking about is Robert Hall. He's an u15 next year! That team is exceptional and has 3 or 4 players who stand half a chance! The teams 2 years below them are top quality too! Robert will play for the u16's next year and will probably get a few games towards the end of the season for the u18's. He's a centre forward and is very similar in style to Dean Ashton! Scored a stupid amount of goals in his age groups!

Thanks Bill that's great news. Although so few make it to the first team I love youth team football, there's a freshness about each new season and the chance that you may see the beginning of something special. I hold Tony Carr in the same high esteem as Greenwood and Lyall and he is the last person I would like to lose from the club, in any capacity.

Out of the the three, then Tomkins is the jewel from what i saw last season. Sears has a lot of promise, even though he is vertically challenged (some may say) he can make up with his low center of gravity, making him more than a handful, turning and twisting into the box. The boy just needs to beef up a bit more, making it harder to knock him off the ball. Collinson for me, well lets say the jury is still out on that one. Hopefully he will get a real chance to shine, next season. The three of them seem to give their all for the shirt, and in my book that's all you can ask and a good start! COYproudtoplayfortheIrons!!!

Sears is only an inch shorter than Michael Owen you know?

Which proves my point very well, i think! Thanks Dave!

My money would be on Tomkins. Sears looks good but his size may ultimately count against him. How many young strikers have exploded on to the scene and fizzled away into nothing? I still remember Ade Coker! Tomkins already has the physical attributes and, as he grows with age, should have the physique to succeed. The lad looks confident too. He has a lot to learn and is not ready yet, based on last season's performances, but he could be the real McCoy into the future. As for Collison, his decision to opt for Wales probably says a lot about his ambition and confidence. My money would be on him being Fizzy Pop quality at best; but I hope I'm wrong! Stech is meant to be good by the way - he could come through!

Good morning my dear, under the current rules am I allowed to say that I completely agree with you! I think they all look like they have potential but for me Tomkins does look like he has something about him. He did make a couple of mistakes in matches that were costly but already seems to have the maturity to put it behind him and move on. Another question is with us looking like have a fitter squad how many games will Curbs give them? I'm hoping he certainly keeps Tomkins involved and would like to see Sears giving a run from the bench throughout the season.

Given we are allowed more subs, I would have Stech, Sears and Tomkins on the bench and would use them for the last 15-20 minutes when we have a two or three goal lead. Kind of like when we were 5-0 up away to Derby. Trouble was, the kids were nowhere to be seen so on came Collins!

Is that from this season Fanno? Will it be 3 form 7 now? By the way like the positive vibes, when we are 2 or 3 up!
Submitted by hammersfanno1 on 6 July, 2008 - 09:31.
I think it is this season yes.

Tomkins definately has the potential to go all the way. Every game he played, i think he played brilliant. A few mistakes.. but that's expected from somebody with little experience. Centre-backs never get the praise they deserve! Lets hope they all make it into the match day squads within a few seasons. Watch out for this new boy from Iceland aswell, he looks top!!

Tompkins, very few his age could step up and play with the big boys.

Jack Collison. No need to explain!!! I can also see Tomkins being a big hit.

None at all! But I seriously think they all have a good chance of becoming first team regulars if they are given a chance.

can really see all three of them becoming west ham and england legends but i can see tomkins especially, loads of potential and ability

Unfortunately for England, Collinson decided to play for Wales where he already has a handful of caps. He qualified via his Welsh grandparents.

He is from Watford, i'm so proud of myself for knowing that. Noble qualifies for the Rep of Ireland.

Yeah I bet England are gutted - its like Ryan Giggs all over again! I'll wager Collison will make less than 10 appearances and dissapear into the Football League.
