Money for the Tory Party

So, how do we all feel about our club being associated with giving money to the Conservative Party? At best it's poor PR and timing giving the great deal we have on the OS and just opens the door to all the jealous fans of other clubs to bitch again about an old story. Maybe it's also just a bit deeper than that when you think of the club roots as a works team, blue collar, deprived area, etc etc normally associated with the Labour Party? Or should football clubs just remain neutral? Having just committed to two season tickets and being a socialist all my life, I am not impressed that any of my money has been sent to the foot soldiers of the ruling class! Discuss...

More dirt being dug up & not good to hear that donations have been forwarded to the tories (especially as boris had a big part to play in securing the deal!) Like you say it gives more ammunition to people connected to other clubs to have a dig.. Expect "hearnia" to pipe up very soon!!;)

I'm pretty disgusted at this news tbh. Like you say the roots of the club are with the working class and for me that's a spit in the eye to all those people. Too tired of it to worry about pointing fingers about our deal but ANY football club should stay clear of politics, for me this is the worst thing the club has done since the Daves signed up.

i mean come on lets live in the real world here....you may follow a band buy there records and stuff and find out they have donated money to a cause or a political party you do not like or disagree totally with there philosophy but in the end it is there money to do with as they see fit.....whether you pay for a season ticket or a ticket once in a blue moon what you are paying for is to see a football match not to outline anyones particular views political or otherwise...once you hand your money over and have watched the game/show/movie or whatever it is no longer yours so you have no right to tell someone how to donate/spend it....at the end of the day if it bothers you so much contact the club and return your season tickets and ask for a refund as there are plenty on the waiting list who would happily take them up.

The club in effect is "owned" at present by David Sullivan and David Gold so in effect they have donated £12.5k of their own money, it will be some time before those who are bitter and twisted except that West Ham United are the best option to occupy the OS as preferred anchor tenants. They would rather see the stadium fall down in a clump of rust. Let none of us (whatever our political leanings) be under any illusion had it not been for Mssrs Sullivan and Gold (and of course Ms Brady) we may not be in the position we are in or worst case scenario not exist as a league club. It seems we are more willing en mass to forgive how our owners acquired their fortune rather than what they wish to part with it (regards a small insignificant donation) as mcbikeman says a non story.

I got no problems with Brady, sulli or gold donating said mone but why do it under the banner of West Ham? It's saying all West Ham is Tory! Like I say clubs should be neutral. Politics are politics and football is football never the twain should meet. Keep it out of football

I think that's the problem Plaistow, I don't think the money was from Sugo it was specifically from West Ham, the business rather than a personal donation. From a PR perspective it's an own goal. Agree about your comments re OS and thanks to G&S our club could be at best playing lower league football.

Agree Mcbikeman that it's a non story but yet again the naivety of the owners having got such a good deal on the OS. However, I don't agree that I just buy a ticket to see a football game, that money is also an investment in the club I love. SUGO may "own" the club but be quite clear, without the fans their purchase is worthless! It would be like buying a Rolls Royce with no petrol to run it! Without the fans SUGO would have bought an empty stadium with zero income. By the way, it doesn't bother me that much, just thought the org needed a new subject to debate. I have no intention of returning season tickets and can't wait for the new season.

By neutral I mean just don't bring it into football matters. Next Brady will be telling us how to vote in the referendum! Whoops too late.

I know what you mean but its kind of impossible to avoid, whether knowingly or not politics plays into everything. Especially so when you are dealing with multi-million pound business ventures which are what football clubs are... I think what Brady and the Dave's have done for the club has been wonderful but here are always vested interests and somewhere down the line you are going to have to take a side or be will be associated with one, one way or another

Haha... you got that youtube video to thank, where I got the inspiration from - then googled a picture of a horse and here we are! I was going to choose another photo of a horse with his Newcastle-era cane rows but I thought nah keep it current!

Much like Dartford in the original post I am also a Socialist and this did stick in my throat to be fair.
We all know Brady's political affiliation but I wish it could've been kept out of the media in one way or another.

No it wouldn't have, same set of rules apply for ANY ruling government of the day regardless of politics.
Surely you realise that it wasn't the wisest thing to divulge considering the media's attitude to WHUFC and of how we got the stadium 'on the cheap'/tax payers money etc etc?
Comrade Corby??....Do I detect a disparaging tone there Betty?

I think if the owners wanted to make their own personal donations so be it but not under the West Ham name. Not being from the area or England for that matter but knowing that the east end is generally a working class area I would have imagined a lot of the fans would have been disappointed.
