Rethink the Rio decision

of course it will fall on deaf ears but surely Slaven should be on the phone and admit he needs help to sort out our porous defence...Rio offered to help and got a thanks but no thanks but recent performances if you can call them that have been so bad opposing teams don't have to do much to score against us.So a man who has been one of the best defenders this club/country has produced in the last 50years surely he must be given the chance to help a club he clearly still loves

Dicks is the man's picture

you could argue bilic was just as good a defender though?

for another day right now Slaven clearly needs help because he apparently is taking the defensive side of training and when you consider he has the terminator alongside him as well that makes what we are seeing defensive wise as truly shocking I mean look at hulls winner for goodness sake it is just basic defending but nobody appeared to be doing there job.A fresh pair of eyes and a champions league premier league winner would I am sure make our defenders sit up and take notice at what he has to say because right now nothing is winning.

I agree with you. but to be fair i don't think bilic and dicks can take the blame for silly basic defensive errors from individuals. there has to be a time when the players themselves have to take responsibility after all bilic and co don't send them on the pitch and instruct them to commit silly errors.

i'm sorry HG but it comes back to players. Fonte was the fulcrum of S'Hampton' team and the Portuguese Euro wining side, he comes to us and he's total cack, he make Nortvedit look steady. Then Snodgrass is banging in goals for fun at Hull, assists, free kicks you name it, plays in the same position with us and is total dross, looks like the Championship player we passed on a few seasons ago. You just can't legislate for that. What would Rio tell Fonte or Collins that they don'y already know? Bearing in mind they've had more successful International careers than he did. I think if Rio cam in it would be for the likes of Oxford and Burke.

There is no argument there, Rio by a mile mate! No comparison whatsoever in my book. Rio was one of the best young players I have ever seen and he went on to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he captained them to Champions League victory! How you can compare Bilic to Rio surprises me as your normally spot on or thereabouts.

Okay, international means absolutely f all mate. Its the most irritating thing when someone uses international football as a basis of comparison.

but thats an opinion others don't agree with. international football is supposedly the biggest stage. what you are saying is then that Pele and the rest were no good because international football doesnt count? hmm. football is football, international or club…its football mate so of course it counts.

It means nothing mate. You can't say bilic was better then rio based on how far one got in an international tournament

How was Bilic as good as Rio? On the ball Rio was one of the most comfortable defenders on the ball that this country has seen for years and one of the best in the World. He was part of the Leeds side that made the CL semi-finals and was captain of Man Utd winning the CL. I just don't see how Bilic was on the same level when he played for Hadjuk Split, West Ham and Everton (who managed safety only by goal difference with Bilic in the Team)? If he was as good then why didn't he play for top sides like Rio?

not changing my mind. lol. u say he was better on ball but how do u measure that? you cant measure how good he was by who he played for. if he went to man u when he was 20 hed have won the same. I dont know why people think they need to argue someones opinion on a player. its like saying maradona was better than pele because he played for napoli. for me rio was vastly overrated. constantly falling asleep at the back. he had great games and dire ones and I prefer a solid reliable no nonsense defender.

that Bilic takes care of defence himself, he might have been a good defender but if that's the case then why are we so bad. I for one thought our buys in the last window would be good for us but so far I am disappointed and it seems that it's dragging the rest of the team down. Mind you it must be disheartening when you look up and see Andy up front with Fengouli, Ayew and Snodgrass no where near him. He ran his bum off and got back plenty of times to help out the defence mind you they needed it.

Tactically billic is failing and no excuse for playing players out of position or keeping with 1 upfront when it's obviously not working. Would RIO make a difference then quite possibly especially if he was to bring some of fergussons mentality and approach with him. The thing is we have seen the same thing with other managers and other boards where players come to us and seem to have lost all idea of how to play , and passion for the game And managers come to us and seem tactically inept and unable to motivate the team.

Jaap Stam doing a good job with reading ATM. So rio could have a good effect on us.

to be honest i think if we need to bring in 'additional' help then Bilic needs to go. its a bit like when liverpool brought in houllier as joint manager….what is the point? the manager should be capable of managing the team as a whole. yes he has coaches etc but if you have defensive coaches and still need to bring in additional help something is wrong somewhere.

Absolutely. I saw posted somewhere that Dicks doesn't actually do a lot so what is he there for?

There is no gaurantee Rio will make any difference but can he be any worse than dicks who seems to do very little at all. It seems nothing will be done before Saturday so everyone is sitting on their hands and if we lose it will only be too late.

A hammers legend dicks, but what is his input??feck all by the looks of our frail defence!!Allegedly he was a poor trainer back in the day, maybe he just has a little office at rush green where he puts his feet up for 40 winks!!

i think a lot has to do with this constant changing by Bilic. last season we had a back four and a set way of playing - counter attack. everyone knew what they were doing. this year its been back 3, back 5, two up front, one up front. now I'm all for a manager who likes a tinker to meet opposing challenges but this has added to our weak defending imo. he just can't make his mind up what he wants to do. far better off playing a back 4, 4 in the middle and two up front and playing counter attack. teams sussed us out last year towards the end and the one up front became ineffective.

up

Id agree a settle back for as much as you can. Pick the best back four he can and keep it as close to that for the rest of the season and cross your fingers. Does he even know what it is tho? It's the best we can hope for, and maybe we might come out the other side in a positive.

That and his insistence on playing underperforming and poor players, changes tactics at wrong times finds something that works then changes it..... list goes on.

Oh and the fact that Kouyate is still getting gametime in midfield isnt doing us any favours either...

I've said it a few times, so I might as well say it again, my opinion is kouyate should be centre half. His pace might complement Collins v Swansea
