Major Player Rethink For Irons

Although the transfer window was a considerable success for West Ham, there are still those who are bemoaning the lack of arrivals 'up top' to replace Gianluca Scamacca and act as back up to big Mikey Antonio and Frankenstein hairline Danny Ings.

From a distance it seemed as if Tim Steidten was going to pull a South American 'bunny' from the hat, indeed he nearly succeeded in getting not one but two deals over the line, however when it came to pulling the trigger the 'phantom' of dual ownership of players reared it's ugly head meaning it became a big NO NO from the Irons to complete any of the deals on offer.

Having had its fingers well and truly incinerated by the Tevez and Mascherano transfers and the resulting fall out, the powers that be, David Sullivan in particular would have choked on his nice glass of vintage claret at the very whiff of 'shared ownership'!

As David Moyes is unofficially known as the 'new striker killer' it came as no surprise when the window opened and closed without any further strikers being added, IF the club could have 'bounced' Danny Ings and/or Maxwell Cornet things might have been different, but neither player wanted to leave which may have been influenced by the handsome wage packet both players receive at West Ham.

There is also the opinion that IF a new striker HAD been brought in, then 'Moysie' would have got him to play 'out of position', so making do with what he has was probably the best option. The club will almost certainly announce the signing of Moyes's 'love child'Jesse Lingard early next week and he too will be added to the 'false' front line, some clubs do play a false number nine, but NOT an entire front line!

Early results seem to confirm that the team CAN cope with just the one striker, but what happens when the inevitable injury or suspension kicks in? The answer is that another 'battering ram' will be employed, probably in the form of Divin Mubamba. This approach may well pay dividends but will the 'subtifuge' be able to last an entire season, surely teams will 'suss' out what is going on and create their own game plan to counter 'Moyesball'?

Well, yes and no, because Hammers do NOT fit into the general 'template' of Premier League football and as such can represent a big issue for teams who are used to possession football. Last season Moyes tried to have his team 'play attacking football' and the experiment failed miserably, almost ending in relegation.

The reason Moyes changed things up was due to fan pressure and the fact that other teams had learned to counter Hammers counter, the squad he had available was simply not able to recreate the swashbuckling counter attack team that finished sixth and seventh in the previous consecutive years.

This season it is all change and a bit of 'back to the future', Moyes now DEFINITELY HAS THE SQUAD to carry out guerilla attacks after sustaining long term pressure, he has sufficient outlets to hit ANY team on the break and why not? It will be interesting to see where in the table Hammers are after say a dozen games, with the squad that is available Moyes should definitely be looking at a comfortable top half finish and possibly a sneaky sixth or seventh place although the club will be playing Thursday Sunday, but most of the players are used to that anyway as this is Hammers THIRD consecutive season in Europe.

A new striker would have been nice, but for once it seems the club was buying for the club during the window and not just to please the fans.....long may it continue! - Ed

But thats only if we have not conceded first.....Playing on the front foot albeit in third gear against Luton we looked average.....so lets see how we do against Citeh and the bindippers....unlike those deluded spud fans who think beating Bournemouth and Burnley away in successive games means they are challenging for the title.....got ta love them whenever you need a laugh the spuds always cheer you up lol.

But I think Moyesball will be better against City and BDers. More opportunities to hit them on the rebound. I think the Bar Codes will be a bigger test believe or not because they also love the counter attack.

If only we'd have gone for the throat and knocked in a bagful we'd be sitting second instead of fourth today. Pisses me off that the dinosaur has no ideas of plan B, C, D OR even E ffs...Now we go in for the 6 pointer v City with our tails between our legs after only putting 2 in v Luton. Looking forward to it with confidence now, but still think we should be getting more shots on goal rather than passing through the defence to waste minutes, nothing boils my piss more...rant over...enjoy the week people and being in 4th of course

We was on a hiding to nothing at Luton. First home game back in the Premier League. Weathered the expected storm well & hit them with a superbly crafted first goal. I for one thought we would only have 1 or 2 points maximum by this stage when the season started. Plus we are scoring goals.
I'm quite confident going into the City game. Think Moyes might employ Alvarez to stick tight to Haaland.

i think Moyes had a plan and it worked, its all about results at this stage and it was job done. Im not getting upset about being 4th on goal difference after 4 games, even a short memory has nightmares of last seasons start!

Having a striker whilst Moyes is in charge, Haller, Scamacca and now Ings are a point in case that he just hasn't a clue, or refuses to utilise them to their strengths and potential. Even Halaand would struggle to score goals in his set up. Although our new midfield seems to have the potential to score goals, none of them have decent pace on the counter with the possible exception of Benrahma who unfortunately seems to be left in no mans land with no one up there for him to play off. And this is against a seemingly easy opening fixture list, the excitement of beating Chelsea now tempered by seeing how poor they actually are now.
Not sure where you saw "a swashbuckling counter attack team" when we finished 6th or 7th, maybe finishing above midtable rose tinted the glasses a touch, because Moyes football has alwaysbeen dull and tedious and timid since day one, and previously at former clubs Everton, Utd and Sunderland.
I stand by my view that this is going to be a very long season and even in the event of another above midtable finish I won't be holding my breath at the hope of any exciting football if the opening fixtures are anything to go by. A leopard never changes its spots.

Im not a fan of Moyes DH but he is getting results. look at the teams that have a swashbuckling style in the top 6 and then look at the quality of players they have. We are improving but we are no City, Liverpool or heaven forbid Arsenal.

Its not about the money... just look at the melt down at Stamford Bridge, not sure if Potch will last longer than the famous Truss lettuce!!

It's the defence that concerns me. The goal Luton scored was awful there centre half should never have been in space between Aguerd and Zouma. It's ok them looking at each other saying he's your man. It's amatureish.

Hopefully Stavros peeps can be fit soon. Although the lack of full back depth is worrying.

We will score goals from midfield and use Kouros as a striker perhaps. But Moyes needs to sort the Centre halves out pronto!!!!

Oi big boy, what's your name?

I’m with you there Boogers , defence is our biggest worry. Both Ageurd and Zooma are gifted ball players but bot prone to the occasional gaffe. I’ve always liked Ogbonna. Maybe the big Greek will solve our problems? We live in hope.

Its a results business,if we win whatever way,who can argue with that....All this West Ham Way,weve heard about,is surely to get the ball in the net,as the same with any club.

I agree 100% Essex. But if we struggle against a pub team and concede the way we did. Scraping a 2-1 win. The ball will be in our net more than the oppositions.

Results are what it's all about. City may or may not rip us a new one, leaving it like a wizards sleeve. Nobody expects us to win, so Moyes will escape again...
